1 Air Academy High School 6910 Carlton Drive USAF Academy, CO An Academy School District Twenty High School May 03, 2018 Dear Junior: According to your schedule for the school year, you have signed up for Honors American Literature and Composition. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the class! Many of you expressed your desire to be challenged and to improve your writing as part of the accelerated curriculum the honors program provides. As preparation for your participation in this class, I am recommending that you read two literary works over the summer. If you choose not to read them and do the related work over the summer, you will be responsible for the assignments during the school year when we will also be reading other works, completing other projects, and engaging in other assignments. Please consider your own schedule and keep in mind the level of thinking and work asked of you in an honors class. The two works are: A classic novel from the attached/linked book list notes will be due and an assessment will take place the first full week of September (Sept. 3-7 th ). Mark Twain s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn-- notes will be due and test will take place in the middle of April. Do not succumb to the temptation to substitute the film version for Twain s work nor for your choice novel. Not a good idea. You should obtain a print copy of both of these works (including the first assignment, the choice novel) you will need them for class discussion and other assignments. In addition to testing over the novels before we cover them throughout the school year, you will be asked to become an expert on aspects of the novels. Your expert notes will be due for each assignment as we get to it within the scope and sequence of the curriculum. At the end of this letter you will find a listing of assignments for each novel (including the topics assigned according to the first letter of your last name for Huck Finn). Of course, I will expect you to be knowledgeable about ALL the topics listed, but to have particular expertise on the one(s) assigned to you. As we approach each work in class, I will give you a specific due date for your reading notes. I will also set a specific date for the assessment over each of these works as we get closer to going over the particular work. You will submit your TYPED notes to turnitin.com. I will give you instructions to register on turnitin.com at the beginning of the school year. Students are always concerned about the length required for an assignment of this nature. I recommend two to four pages of notes minimum for each of the three selections. These can be in any format you choose: sentences, phrases, bulleted items, etc. Be sure to include actual quoted material from the works and the appropriate page numbers (MLA parenthetical citation format). Also, you should consult and include references to outside experts (scholarly journals/reviews) for each selection. Have a wonderful summer! I am looking forward to seeing you in the fall. Sincerely, Mr. Dan Olson, Principal (719) Ms. Heather Scott heather.scott@asd20.org Air Academy High School 6910 Carlton Drive USAF Academy, CO The Mission of Air Academy High School, dedicated to our tradition of excellence, is to foster a community of lifelong learners in a safe, supportive atmosphere where challenging educational experiences combined with positive risk taking and mutual respect for one another encourage and inspire exceptional personal growth.
2 Your personal choice of American Fiction Please select a work from the list that begins on page three of this letter (link to book list with hyperlinked Amazon book reviews). In making a selection of American fiction, please remember to select a work that is appropriate for you and approved by a parent/guardian. Some of the novels listed contain mature content and themes. For this, I would like you to keep a Reader Response Log in which you record your choice of observations, comments, analysis, etc. Be sure to include page numbers for future reference. Possible topics for you to explore include: What is the American Dream or vision of what it means to be an American as presented in this novel? Include several examples throughout the novel! How did the time period affect the author s writing? What is the author s purpose? What statements about humanity is the author making? Consider what literary and rhetorical devices the author uses and the purpose and meaning created by those devices. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain Assigned topics are as follows: (Use the first letter of your last name to find your topic; i.e. Winam I. Dunne would explore Jim as Huck's true father.) ABC Twain's use of irony and satire D E F Jim as Huck's true father G H I J Freedom of the raft vs. restrictions of society K L M N Maturation of Huck's view of human experience 0 P Q R Huck and Tom/ character comparisons S T U V Ultimate consequences for one's actions W X Y Z Twain's style/ dialect/ setting/ theme/ symbolism
