Agenda Housekeeping Buoyancy & The Titanic
Housekeeping Guest teacher this Friday, 14 Sep. Deep Sea Exploration video & questions worksheet. SHS Club Fair will be 19 Sep. During both lunches. Homecoming week begins 1 Oct.
Exploring Oceans Learning Objectives: Define buoyancy (& Archimede s principle). Explain why some objects sink, while others float. Explain what happened to the Titanic when it hit the iceberg.
Buoyancy Observation. Exploring Oceans Copy the following table in your ISN with at least 10 rows. Number Item Prediction Float? 1 2 Float? Observe the following items as they are dropped into the tank of water. In the column Float? place a YES or NO based on your observations.
Buoyancy Observation. Exploring Oceans Why do some objects float, while others sink? - Weighs more than the water it displaces. - Aluminum-foil ball floats because air is trapped within causing it to weigh less than the water it displaces.
Why did the Titanic sink? Exploring Oceans Examine the illustration of Archimede s principle in Figure 1-1 on pg. 6. How much does the object weigh in air? How much does it weigh in the water? What is the apparent loss of weight in water?
Archimede s Principle. Exploring Oceans Greek scientist who discovered that floating object are supported by an upward force called buoyancy. States (a) buoyant force on any object = weight of the liquid that object displaces; (b) object immersed in liquid appears to lose weight & apparent weight loss = weight of liquid displaced.
Exploring Oceans How does Archimede s principle explain how the Titanic sank? A steel ship floats because it is constructed to have many airfilled compartments.
Exploring Oceans How does Archimede s principle explain how the Titanic sank? The air-filled compartments filled with water after the collision with the iceberg. Added weight of the water + weight of the ship > supporting buoyant force.

Exploring Oceans Magellan circumnavigates the globe. Figure 1-4 (pg. 9)
Exploring Oceans What is known about the early ocean explorers & navigators? Complete your review of pgs With your team write as much information about your assigned explorer/navigator as you can from the textbook. The Vikings = A Bartholomeu Dias = B Christopher Columbus = C John Cabot = D Vasco Nunez de Balboa = E Ferdinand Magellan = F Giovanni da Verrazano = G Jacques Cartier - H You will be writing the information you have discovered on the board.
