2 Practice examination 2 Paper 2 SECTION A Read the following passage and then answer the questions which follow. Disaster in space 1 Christa McAuliffe was a teacher. She taught at Concord High School in the USA. Christa liked teaching, but there was something else she wanted to do. She wanted to travel in space. 2 In 1984, Christa heard that the Space Centre was planning to send a teacher on the next mission on the space shuttle. She sent her application to the Space Centre. She hoped that she would be chosen. 3 From the 11,500 applicants, Christa was chosen. She was chosen because she was an excellent teacher who always made her lessons interesting. She was a good communicator who could teach people about space travel. While in space, she was going to teach two lessons about how people lived in space and how the shuttle worked. Back on Earth, people would be able to watch Christa teach these lessons on television and learn more about space travel. 4 The launch date for the shuttle, Challenger, was Tuesday 28th January, Millions of people were watching on television. A large crowd of people were at the launch site too. They cheered loudly when Christa and six astronauts entered the space shuttle. Christa's two children (Caroline, aged 6 and Scott, aged 9), her husband and her parents felt very proud as they watched Christa begin her great adventure. 5 At am the countdown to lift-off began. The crowd listened to the countdown. Six seconds before lift-off, the main engines started up. They became a fierce roar. Three seconds later came the blast of the two solid-fuel rocket boosters. The noise was deafening. Next, huge clouds of steam and smoke surrounded Challenger. Finally, at am, there was lift-off. Challenger rose above the Earth on a bed of fire. The watching crowd cheered.

3 6 However, 35 seconds into the flight, things started to go wrong. A small orange flame flickered. It should not have been there. It grew, and then just 73 seconds after lift-off, and 13 km above the sea, hundreds of tonnes of liquid fuel ignited in a huge fireball. Then the space shuttle exploded. 7 On the grandstand the crowd watched silently as pieces of wreckage fell into the sea. They were in shock. The mission had gone dreadfully wrong and Christa and the rest of the crew were dead. 8 Today, many years after the Challenger space shuttle tragedy, Christa McAuliffe and the crew have not been forgotten. People will always remember this terrible disaster. From paragraphs 1 and 2 1 (a) What was Christa McAuliffe's job? (b) In which country did Christa live? (c) What did Christa want to do?
