1 Concerns of police survivors Kentucky Chapter 2 nd QTR 2015 P.O. Box 23404, Lexington, KY KentuckyCops@gmail.com INSIDE THIS ISSUE Parents Retreat Kentucky Spouses Retreat Christmas Party 2015 LEU: Road to Hope National Police Week Announcements End of Watch: Gone But Not Forgotten FYI Don Grignon Surviving Father 01 Parents Retreat T he 2015 COPS Parents Retreat was held in the scenic mountains south of Little Rock, Ark. in late October. There were 187 parents in total and, of those, there were about 40 first timers. Seeing long-time acquaintances and catching up on the year gone by was wonderful. Seeing the change, for the better, in the first timers in one short weekend was miraculous. There were parents whose children died in-the-line in Raw emotion showed on their faces. Tears came easily. Sadness hung over them like a dark cloud. That was Friday night and Saturday morning. Then the sessions began and the camaraderie of the more seasoned attendees took over. Smiles mixed with the tears. There were glimmers of hope crossing some of the new faces. MISSION STATEMENT...Continued on Page 2 Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc. and the Kentucky Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) provides resources to assist in the rebuilding of the lives of surviving families and affected co-workers of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty as determined by Federal criteria. Furthermore, C.O.P.S. provides training to law enforcement agencies on survivor victimization issues and educates the public of the need to support the law enforcement profession and its survivors.

2 KY C.O.P.S. News PAGE 2 New friendships developed. There was feeling that someone understood where they were. The veterans could demonstrate that the pain lessens with hard work and time and the healing hand of God. There were a half dozen Arkansas State Police there to welcome the buses from the airport and help with the luggage. The Arkansas Fish and Wildlife had about 15 people helping with the outdoor activities and putting on demonstrations Saturday. Helpful, courteous and the friendliest folks you d ever meet. Nobody complimented the food but nobody missed a meal. Those were the times for personal discussions between and among parents. Stories were shared. Contact information was exchanged. Bonding took place over the second cup of coffee. A rousing success. Lots of money raised by the silent auction (over $300 by Kentuckians) for next year s retreat. Thanks to KY COPS, the National COPS for the honor given to our sons and daughters. Sherry Bryant Surviving Spouse 03 Kentucky Spouses Retreat The Annual KY C.O.P.S. Spouses Retreat, was once again a great success. There were eight surviving spouses in attendance, including two first-timers. Once again the retreat was held at Cumberland Falls State Park. The double cabins were even better than last year! The space was very accommodating which made for a very safe environment. Because of this, the love, trust and friendship blossomed and was felt by all. After a night of talking, a fantastic breakfast was a treat the next morning. No trip to Cumberland Falls is complete without actually seeing the falls! A short hike to take in the sights was a priority before everyone packed up and headed home. A wonderful time was had by all and hopefully more spouses will join us in the years to come! 2

3 KY C.O.P.S. News PAGE 3 Christmas Party 2015 Brandy Durman Surviving Spouse 10 The Kentucky COPS Board of Directors would like to extend a sincere THANK YOU to all of our volunteers and members who spent countless hours preparing for our Christmas Luncheon. They were the busiest elves we have ever seen! Our 15 th annual holiday party was a huge success according to survivors. Approximately 130 surviving family members and supporters were in attendance. Everyone was greeted by a slideshow of KY COPS photos from years past and were able to enjoy fellowship and a wonderful meal as the slideshow was played. Several individuals were presented with awards for their dedication to surviving families and Kentucky COPS. The event ended with Santa and his elves handing out gifts to all the children, teens and surviving families present. The room was filled with laughter, tears and much joy as fallen officers were remembered. It is our sincere hope that the Christmas Luncheon and the many events we have each year bring survivors together so that they may support and comfort one another and form everlasting bonds Award Recipients Dedication Award: Keith Broughton Service Through The Years: Julie Schmidt Appreciation Award: Wilbert's Vault Company Member of the Year: Brandy Durman Agency of the Year: Lexington Police Department 3

Registration for the 2016 ride begins July 1 at To become a member you must be a sworn or retired Law Enforcement Officer or a survivor of an officer killed in the line of duty. Law Enforcement United has different routes starting from Northern Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. In 2016, Team Kentucky will participate in the Virginia route. For more information, contact Craig Sutter at cmsutter@gmail.com or visit In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. National Police Week is a collaborative effort of many organizations dedicated to honoring America s law enforcement agencies. The principle organizers of National Police Week include: National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) Fraternal Order of Police / Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary (FOP / FOPA) Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) 4
