2 Introduction Pepperl+Fuchs loop-powered isolators consist of current repeaters/drivers and converters. Repeaters and drivers transfer unaltered signals from safe areas to hazardous areas or vice versa. Converters change signals from one unit to an appropriate measuring signal such as the 0/ or 0/1-5 V. P+F offers converters for RTDs, thermocouples, current and resistance. Since isolators in this section are loop-powered, use the specifications listed in the technical data to verify that proper voltage is available to the field devices. 95

It is loop powered and has a noticeably lower power loss compared to active isolator modules. The module isolates signals for transmitters and positioners and is bidirectionally HART compatible. The HART transmitters and HART positioners can be configured in the safe area as well as in the hazardous area. The low 5 V voltage drop also allows for transmitter applications with unstable power sources in the range of VDC. Please note that the voltage drop across the resistor in the active measurement circuit must be included when calculating the available field voltage (Terminals 1+ and 2) Lead breakage monitoring is possible by means of the reaction of the field current signal to the safe area, which means the control system has to monitor for an underscale or overscale condition. The module can also be used for controlling solenoid valves and discrete outputs, such as LEDs based on the internal voltage limits (safe area).
