2 Function nd system design Mesuring principle Prosonic Flow opertes on the principle of trnsit time difference. An coustic (ultrsonic) signl is trnsmitted in oth directions from one mesuring sensor to the other. As the signl propgtion velocity of the wves is less when the wves trvel ginst the direction of flow thn long the direction of flow, trnsit time difference occurs. This difference is directly proportionl to the flow velocity. System design Mesuring system The Prosonic Flow ultrsonic flow mesuring system lwys consists of trnsmitter nd the relted mesuring sensors. All components re ville in different versions depending on the ppliction requirements. The trnsmitter is used to ctute the mesuring sensors. The electronics nd the softwre in the trnsmitter re used to prepre, process nd evlute the sensor signls nd to convert the mesuring signl to the desired output vriles. The mesuring sensors work idirectionlly s sound trnsmitters nd sound receivers. The electricl signls of the trnsmitter re converted to pressure signl in the mesuring sensors nd vice vers. Depending on the design, the different sensor versions of ultrsonic flow mesuring devices offer unique possiilities in the ppliction. The properties nd enefits of the different versions re explined in detil on the following pges. 2 Endress+Huser

3 Sensor rrngement The trnsmitter offers numer of options etween 1 nd 4 trverses for the type of instlltion = 1 trverse, 2 = 2 trverses, 4 = 4 trverses A Recommendtions: Due to their design nd properties, the Prosonic Flow sensors re prticulrly suited to certin nominl dimeter rnges nd pipe wll thicknesses. For this reson, vrious sensor types re offered for Prosonic Flow P for these different pplictions. Recommendtions for sensor instlltion cn e found in the following tle. Plese note tht the signl strength is reduced with ech dditionl reflection point in the pipe. (Exmple: 2 trverses = 1 reflection point). The instlltion of clmp-on sensors is principlly recommended in the 2 trverse type of instlltion. This type of instlltion llows the esiest nd most comfortle type of mounting nd mens tht system cn lso e mounted even if the pipe cn only e ccessed from one side. If the pipe nominl dimeter is smll (DN 60 nd smller), the sensor spcing with Prosonic Flow W/P cn e too smll for n instlltion with 2 trverses. In this cse, the 1 trverse type of instlltion must e used. In ll other instnces, the 2 trverse configurtion is the preferred method. The use of Prosonic Flow P sensors DN is principlly recommended for plstic pipes with wll thickness > 10 mm, pipes mde of composites such s GRP, pipes with lining, even for nominl dimeters < DN 100. This pplies lso to pplictions with medi with high coustic dmping. For these pplictions, we principlly recommend mounting the P sensors with 1 trverse configurtion. If the mesuring device displys n insufficient signl strength, reduce the numer of the trverses. Endress+Huser 3

4 Two-chnnel mesuring devices Prosonic Flow 93 hs two mesuring chnnels which re independent of one nother. In other words, the trnsmitter supports the simultneous opertion of two sensor pirs t two individul mesuring chnnels. In doing so, the resources of the trnsmitter re split evenly etween the two chnnels. This ility of the trnsmitter cn e used in mny different wys: For two-chnnel mesurement For two-pth mesurement The trnsmitter cn output the mesured vlues of oth chnnels either individully or rithmeticlly linked (s totl, difference or men). Two-chnnel mesurement In the cse of dul-chnnel mesurement, the mesured vlues of two independent mesuring points re determined nd processed y one trnsmitter. 5 Two-pth mesurement In dul-pth mesurement, the trnsmitter is used to operte two sensor pirs which re instlled on the sme pipe. Different pplictions cn necessitte different types of instlltion. The following possiilities for outputting mesured vlues re suitle for dul-pth mesurement: Individul output of mesured vlues from chnnel 1 nd 2 Arithmetic men of the mesured vlues from chnnel 1 nd 2 (CH1 + CH2 / 2) The possiility of otining the men vlue in dul-pth mesurement provides the dvntge of more stle mesured vlue. A mesured vlue tht is generted from two independent mesuring signls is generlly less sensitive to irregulrities nd fults in the ppliction. As result, if conditions re not idel, for exmple, the dul-pth system mens tht the different flow components within the flow cn e etter determined thnks to the fct tht the mesured vlues re determined independently on two levels. Differences re then lnced out when the two mesured vlues re susequently verged to form one process vrile. This often results in more stle nd more ccurte mesured vlue thn would e the cse with single-pth mesurement. The mesuring device supports the individul configurtion of the mesuring chnnels. Note! 6 Commissioning ccessories During mounting nd commissioning, in order to determine the sensor distnce, you require dt on the mesurement liquid, the pipe mteril used nd the exct pipe dimensions. Dt on the most common liquids, pipe mterils nd lining mterils re progrmmed into the Prosonic Flow 93 progrm.
