2 Retroreflective sensors Plce the reflector t the required loction nd secure it firmly. Cover the reflector with dhesive tpe so tht only the center (pproximtely 5% of the surfce) remins free. Instll the retroreflective sensor so tht it switches relibly. Finlly remove the dhesive tpe from the reflector. Thru-bem sensors Plce the receiver in the required position nd secure it firmly. Align the emitter with the receiver s ccurtely s possible. Minimum clernce The proximity switches must not interfere with ech other. Therefore minimum distnce must be observed between two sensors. The following distnces re recommended vlues only. The vlues given re for mximum sensitivity. NSD00795 Diffuse sensor NSD00796 Retroreflective sensor NSD00797 Setting the operting distnce Sensitivity is either djusted using built-in potentiometer or tught by mens of tech-in function. When potentiometer is used, turning clockwise increses sensitivity nd thus the chievble operting distnce. Diffuse sensor nd diffuse sensor with bckground suppression The object is positioned in front of the sensor inside its sensing rnge. Set the sensitivity, or distnce, in such wy tht the object to be scnned is sure to be sensed. If necessry, the surplus light disply (green LED) must be ctive. The object must then be removed. If the output remins on, sensitivity must be reduced. In devices with tech-in function, sensitivity is djusted utomticlly. During this process, the sensor is tught the two sttes "Object there" nd "Object not there" by pressing the keys. Retroreflective sensors nd thru-bem sensors In norml cses, the sensor is lwys operted with sensitivity t mximum. This produces the mximum surplus light. It is usully only necessry to reduce sensitivity for sensing very smll or trnsprent objects. The procedure is the sme s for diffuse sensors. length Long cbles between the devices result in: Additionl cpcitive loding (short-circuit protection) Incresed injection of interference. For this reson the specified mximum cble length must not be exceeded. Function Diffuse sensor (energetic sensor) The light from the emitter flls on n object nd is reflected in diffuse pttern. Prt of this reflected light reches the receiver locted in the sme device. If the intensity of the received light is sufficient, the output is switched. The sensing rnge depends on the size nd color of the object involved s well s its surfce texture. The sensing rnge cn be vried within wide rnge by mens of the built-in potentiometer. The energetic sensor cn therefore lso be used to detect different colors. Thru-bem sensor Opto proximity switches D4/M5 M1 M18 K31 K30 K80 L18 (lser light brrier) L50 (lser light scnner) L50 (lser light brrier) C50 (color sensor) 1) Focusing t 50 m. Dimension 50 mm 50 mm 50 mm 50 mm 750 mm 500 mm 150 mm 1) 30 mm 80 mm 500 mm Diffuse sensor with bckground suppression Diffuse sensors with bckground suppression cn detect objects up to specific sensing rnge. All objects beyond this rnge re suppressed. The focus level cn be djusted. The bckground is suppressed due to the geometric constelltion between the emitter nd the receiver. Siemens FS /71

3 Retroreflective sensors The light from the emitter diode is focused through lens nd directed vi polriztion filter to reflector (principle of 3-wy mirror). Prt of the reflected light psses through nother polriztion filter nd reches the receiver. The filters re selected nd ligned in such wy tht only the light reflected from the reflector reches the receiver nd not the light reflected from other objects within the bem rnge. An object tht interrupts the light bem from the emitter through the reflector to the receiver cuses the output to switch. Lser diffuse sensor with nlog output The nlog lser proximity switch cn mesure the exct distnce of n object within its sensing rnge. Due to the use of visible lser light, the mesurement is highly ccurte nd the output is extremely liner. All lser proximity switches belong to sfety clss, i.e. they re hrmless nd cn be used without ny risk to helth (e.g. to the eyes). Thru-bem sensors Thru-bem sensors comprise n emitter nd receiver. The emitter is ligned in such wy tht the gretest possible mount of pulsed light from the emitter diode reches the receiver. The receiver evlutes the incoming light to clerly seprte it from the mbient light nd other light sources. Any interruption of the light bem between emitter nd receiver cuses the output to switch. Color sensors The color sensor functions with n incndescent LED, which illumintes the object. During sensor djustment, the light reflected from the object is mesured nd ssigned to the pproprite output. The recognized color is stored in the device in non-voltile memory, nd is immeditely vilble even when the sensor hs been switched off nd on gin. Either three independent colors or one color scle cn be sved nd evluted. The mesured color vlue (RGB) is not vilble. Color mrk sensor The color mrk sensor uses green or red emitted light. The color is selected utomticlly depending on the contrst. The mrk color nd the bckground color cn be set seprtely by mens of two keys. Devices for fiber-optic conductors Opticl fibers re fitted in front of the emitter nd receiver. They represent the "extended eye" of the Opto proximity switch. As opticl fibers re very smll nd flexible, they provide prcticl solution to the problem of sensing t points tht re not esily ccessible. Furthermore no electricl potentil is trnsferred. /7 Siemens FS

8 More informtion Glossry for opticl proximity switches Terms ssocited with the technology of photoelectric proximity switches re explined below. Some of the terms re defined in IEC Anti-interference function This function prevents mutul interference between opto proximity switches. The specified clernces between the devices does not hve to be observed for devices with n nti-interference function. It is therefore possible to lign two reflex sensors, for exmple, with common reflector. Function of the outputs Drk-ON The "drk-on" function mens tht this output is conducting (current-crrying) when no light reches the receiver. Light-ON The "light-on" function mens tht this output is conducting (current-crrying) when light reches the receiver. Antivlent The devices with ntivlent output hve outputs. One output is drk-on, nd the other is light-on. Surplus light As n lterntive, some devices cn be supplied with different configurtion of outputs, one output light-on nd the other for signling the surplus light. Output current The devices re designed for mximum output current (rted operting current, see Technicl specifictions). If this current is exceeded, even briefly, the built-in overlod nd short-circuit protection will be ctivted. Destruction of the device is effectively prevented. Incndescent lmps, cpcitors nd other strongly cpcitive lods (e.g. long leds) hve similr effect to n overlod. A minimum lod current (smllest operting current) is not required. A built-in pull-up resistor ensures tht n output signl is lwys vilble. Auto-collimtion With these devices, the opticl xes of the emitter nd receiver re identicl. The device only hs one opticl xis. This mens tht there is no blind zone rnge in front of the proximity switch nd the ccurcy of the switching point is higher. Spurious signl suppression The devices feture spurious signl suppression. It prevents the occurrence of spurious signls from the moment of ppliction of the operting voltge until the moment when the device is redy for opertion (pproximtely 5 ms). Sensing rnge The sensing rnge is the rnge within which the operting distnce cn be set. This term replces ny other previously used terms (sensing rnge/trnsmission rnge). Correction fctors The specified sensing rnges of diffuse sensors re chieved with the specified surfces by using mtte white stndrd pper. The following correction fctors (pproximte vlues) pply to other surfces: Test crd 100 % Blck neoprene 0 % White pper 80 % Automobile tires 15 % Light-colored wood 73 % Sheet luminum White plstic 70 % rw 00 % Cork 65 % blck, nodized 150 % Printed newspper 60 % mtte (brushed) 10 % PVC, gry 57 % Stinless steel, polished 30 % Blck plstic % Enbling input With opto proximity switches with test input, the emitter cn be switched on or off. Function monitoring cn be implemented with pproprite evlution of the output signl (light brrier: no obstruction of light bem / diffuse sensors: reflecting object exists). To disble the proximity switch, the enbling input must be connected to. The enbling input does not hve to be used for opertion. Ambient light limit Ambient light is the light produced by externl light sources. The luminescence level is mesured on the light incidence surfce. Thnks to the use of modulted light, the devices re insensitive to mbient light. There is, however, n upper limit for the intensity of ny externl light which is referred to s the mbient light limit. It is specified for sunlight (unmodulted light) nd hlogen light (light modulted t twice the frequency of the electricity supply). Relible opertion is not possible bove the relevnt mbient light limit. Siemens FS /77

9 Integrtion Sensors nd PLCs re growing together Thnks to intelligent linking to the PLC, IQ-Sense cn now be used to implement significntly more flexibility nd relibility of the sensors. The uniform exchnge of dt presents gret number of dvntges for plnt construction s well s for its opertion. For exmple, the new IntelliTech function permits mchine nd plnt constructors to chieve fst commissioning, since ll settings for the IQ-Sense devices cn be mde using the PLC. Vlues set once on sensor cn be trnsmitted to other sensors without problem. Sensors cn be exchnged during opertion without ny extr work since the PLC utomticlly reestblishes ll sensor settings. Furthermore, IQ-Sense permits chnnel-specific system dignostics. Wire brek, short-circuit, mldjustment or module/ sensor filure re utomticlly signled, nd prmeteriztion errors re voided. It is therefore possible to reduce downtimes nd to increse plnt vilbility. Benefits Configurtion with STEP 7 Communiction between sensor nd SIMATIC PLC over lowcost two-core cble Sensor prmeteriztion through the control (IntelliTech) System dignostics down to single sensor reduces downtimes Replcement of sensors during opertion without re-prmeteriztion Connectble proximity switches to ET 00S vi 4 IQ-Sense module to S7-300/ ET 00M vi 8 x IQ-Sense module Opto K80 Retroreflective sensor Retroreflective sensor with bckground suppression Diffuse sensor Opto C40 Retroreflective sensor Diffuse sensor WinCC visuliztion Industril Ethernet Engineering STEP7 S7-300/ET 00M PROCESS FIELD BUS PROFIBUS DP ET 00S Proximity switches with IQ-Sense Opto Opto or Sonr Integrtion of IQ-Sense into the utomtion environment /78 Siemens FS
