The SIKO absolute encoders and positioning systems are in compliance with the European EMV directive 89/6/EU. The European standards EN and EN are applicable to these devices. Tests were based on the classification typical industrial environment. Please observe carefully the appropriate notes in the user documentation before mounting the absolute encoders, especially with respect to their insulation and screening requirements. The characteristic electrical values such as voltage ratings apply for plugs and cable lengths of 2 m. 3 Absolute encoders produced by SIKO Absolute encoders provide absolute and direct measurement of angles of rotation and distances. Linear motion is converted into rotary motion via toothed belts, pinion gearings or cable control. Absolute encoders may find their fields of application in the wood working, metal, printing or packaging industries to measure the movements of robot arms, movement along linear axes, changes in angle or are used in synchronizing (correcting) control. Single-turn, Multi-turn SIKO absolute encoders are supplied in single-turn and multi-turn version, in the case of single-turn encoders, a code disc measures up to 8192 (1 bit) steps per revolution (60 ). After each complete revolution, the coding starts again at its initial value. Additionally, multi-turn encoders are equipped with an encoded stepdown gearing which measures and codes up to 4096 (12 bit) steps per revolution. No need to move to a calibration point after reactivating the voltage supply. Cost saving, because no counter subassemblies are needed. No errors in counting. Field bus compatible Robust assembly, high shock load tolerance Blind hollow shaft up to ø 20 mm Absolute encoder WK 50/1 Multi-turn with hollow shaft The total resolution can be calculated Code disc as follows: : 1 Bit (single-turn) + 12 Bit (revolutions) = 25 Bit Since the number of measuring steps is very high (> million), very long distances can be divided into small steps. 1 Optoelectronic Measuring Principle In comparison to other codes, the Gray code only changes one bit per step (single step code) to prevent reading errors. When the absolute encoder and/or code discs rotate, an optical array scans the code. After one complete turn, the coding starts anew (single-turn) and the sequence is repeated. Optical absolute encoders with a mechanical multi-turn component are equipped with a code disc for measuring 60 of rotation and with additional discs for measuring further revolutions. With Gray-Excess-Binary codes, any integer number of steps, e.g. 60, 1000, can be measured. In this case the coding of the next larger integer power of 2 is partly used, where the codes at the upper and lower ends are symmetrically capped and the surplus codes not used. Example: 1000 = 1024 (2 10 ) - 24 Capped at each end by 24/2 = 12 This results in the special condition that the output codes do not start with 0 and the end value is not identical to the required number of steps per revolution. There are as many data transmission lines necessary as there are tracks on the code-disc. Additionally, one line is required for the voltage supply and one line as a ground cable. Easy conversion of Gray code into Binary code. The clock signals of the control unit synchronize the data transfer between encoder and the control unit. Baud rates can be in the range of 62,5 khz to 1 MHz, depending on the cable length. In applications where several absolute encoders are used, simultaneous recording of all encoder information with no additional line required. 28 Data Transfer / Interface Processing system of synchronous serial data transmission: Continual scanning of the position of the code disc(s). The required data is available at the data input of the parallel/serial (P/S) converter. The control unit calls up the measured value by sending a special pulse sequence to the encoder (the number of bits is dependent of the data to be transferred). The first High-Low transition (point 1 in the pulse diagram fig. ) triggers the monoflop i.e. the value available at the P/S-converter is retrieved. (the Low level of the monoflop prevents more values from being retrieved by the converter during data transfer). The first Low-High-transition (point 2 fig. ) triggers the transfer of the Gray code bit with the highest value. Each following Low-High-transition of the pulse sequence triggers the transition of the bit with the next lower value. The pulses continuously retrigger the monoflop, so it remains Low and no further data will be retrieved. The bit sequence will be halted by stopping the pulses when the bit with the lowest value has been transmitted to the control unit (point fig. ). No further triggering of the monoflop. 29 Data Transfer / Interface Interface InterBus-S The InterBus-S has been developed with the aim of supplying SPS users with a fast field bus for digital data input and output while reducing the cabling cost. The InterBus-S ring-topology is designed in such a way that reciprocal data transmission lines are combined and integrated in one physical line. Basically, a distinction can be made between (distance-) and periphery busses. Note that Inter- Bus-S is an real time bus for the sensor-actor-level which operates with small overhead and transmits up to 4 bytes of data per user for the maximum total number of 256 users. 30 Data Transfer / Interface The following ENCOM encoder types are applied: Type 2 (K2): 2 bit process data binary ranged right readable only no control or status bits The Fraunhofer-Institute for Information- und dataprocessing (IIBT; information and data processing) located in Karlsruhe performs conformity tests of InterBus-S encoders. A certifcate guarantees the reliable operation of the field bus devices tested. Type (K): 2 bit process data coded in accordance with manufacturer s details ranged right 7 status and control bits Options (for WKS and WKM ) Latch function The latch function offers the facility to store the current output value of the absolute encoder until the latch signal is deactivated. At high speeds, the data from the absolute encoder changes equally fast, in many cases too fast to be assimilated by the control unit. By using the latch function, the control unit can freeze the output value until the read sequence has been completed. This ensures that the data read is not corrupted. The control unit calls on the individual encoders (multiplexes) by activating the appropriate tri-state input. The activated encoder may then send it s data to the control unit to be read. 31 Options (for WKS and WKM ) Electronic Correction and Zeroing The electronic correction is achieved by bit or decade setting of the programming switches. By setting the appropriate correction values, the information output by the absolute encoder can be adjusted to the values read from the encoder code wheels. This enables the output value to be set to zero (zeroing). The correction/zeroing is activated by an exterior electrical signal. The programming switches are placed under a sealed cover (IP65) on the rear of the encoder. Due to their dimensions, encoders with electronic correction are only available with cable outlets. Only available for the series WK...65! Parity Bit (parity) This additional output, which provides an odd or even parity bit, is available as an option. Strobe signal An additional strobe signal can be used to synchronize the control unit and absolute encoder. As the requirements of the control unit can vary according to type, there can be no universal solution. With constant mechanical direction of rotation the level of the complement function changes the counting direction of the output codes.
