The Italian RITMARE network of coastal radars Coordinator: Annalisa Griffa (ISMAR CNR) Participants: Carlo Mantovani, Lorenzo Corgnati (ISMAR CNR) Francesco Serafino (IREA CNR) Simone Cosoli (OGS) Francesco Raffa (IAMC CNR) Enrico Zambianchi, Marco Uttieri (CoNISMa - ULR Parthenope DiST)

The Ritmare project The Italian Flagship Project RITMARE ( ) is the largest marine national project funded by MIUR (Italian Ministry of University and Research). It includes 7 sub-projects: 1. Maritime Technologies for the development and construction of a Demonstration Vessel 2. Technologies for Substainable Fishing 3. Planning of the Maritime Space in Coastal Waters 4. Planning of the Deep Marine Environment and the Open Sea 5. Observation System for the Marine Mediterranean Environment 6. Research, Training and Dissemination Structures 7. Interoperable Infrastructure for the Observation Network and Marine Data

Participants and components HF radar component: Frequency MHz 8 SeaSonde CODAR systems; 2 WERA systems Participants: CNR-ISMAR, La Spezia (leading partner) OGS, Trieste CoNISMa - ULR Parthenope DiST X band radar component: Frequency 9,5 GHz; 4 systems Participants: CNR- IAMC (Messina) CNR IREA (Naples) The project is very open to extend the existing core network to new participants (e.g. SICOMAR and CALYPSO)

Installation sites HF Radar CNR ISMAR: Gulf of Manfredonia (b) OGS Northern Adriatic (c1) CoNISMa - ULR Parthenope DiST Gulf of Naples (d) X Band Radar CNR-IREA and CNR-IAMC: Sicily (a1) Venice (a2)

Other installation sites that could join the network HF Radar Calypso Project Consortium: Malta Sicily channel (e) OGS: expected Sicily(c2) LAMMA Consortium (SICOMAR): expected Central Tuscan Archipelago (f)

Goals of the RITMARE network Collaboration and exchange of scientific results and applications Harmonization, definition and implementation of standard QA/QC procedures Defitinition, testing and implementation of interoperability protocols. Work performed in collaboration with EuroGOOS HF radar team and EMODNET.

ISMAR-CNR (HF radars) Overview of participants main scientific achievements Definition of data formats and dissemination Fusion of HF radar and drifter data to improve trajectory hindcast for search and rescue and oil spill mitigation Computation of monthly mean residence times in the Gulf of Manfredonia from HF radar data for fishery application

OGS (HF radars) Quality-control procedures: SNR despiking Identification and removal of bad spectral data Error Analysis: GDOSA, flow curvature and influence of mapping algorithm Short-term (24-H) current prediction: Model validations: Effects of sharp Bathymetric Gradients on mdoel energy biases for σ-level grid June 2011 May 2012 Radar VS model VS model VS drifters: comparison of 5 models Best lagrangian metrics with HFR data

CoNISMa - ULR Parthenope DiST (HF radars) NetCDF conversion of total fields and visualisation on THREDDS server Comparison of ideal and measured total surface fields retrieved by HF radar with CODE-like drifters Hovmöller diagrams of the coast-offshore surface exchanges between the Gulf of Naples and the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea Reconstruction of the surface wave field, with identification of sea storm events

IREA-CNR (X radars) X-band radar for Coastal Moitoring: waves, currents and bathymetry The analysis of x-band radar data allows to estract the information about the waves propagation and to reconstruct the surface current field and the bathymetry map. Bathymetry map provided by the X-band Wave Radar system installed on a ship stops at the port of Salerno Upwelling Phenomenon detected by the X- band Wave Radar system installed on the port of Capo Granitola.

IAMC-CNR (X radars) Radar Radar image Wave Radar Site IAMC CNR Sicily (Italy) Currents velocity and directional spectrum obtained by analyzing radar images sequence during a storm

New perspective participants Two Sea-Sonde antennas 13.5 MHz to be installed in January 2015 System acquired in the framework of the SICOMAR project (cross-border Italy-France proramme) to support safety at sea and marine monitoring, managed by LaMMA Consortium (CNR-Regione Toscana) The monitoring system includes a fully equipped Wave Glider, two Ferryboxes (on the ship routes Livorno-Bastia-Toulon and Livorno-Cagliari), integrated with an existing network of buoys and X-band wave radars, and HR predictive models. Future expansion: towards the Corsica channel, the Southern Tuscan Archipelago (North Tyrrhenian) and the Northern Tuscan Archipelago (in collaboration with CNR- ISMAR)

Other related RITMARE action by Parthenope University The ULR Parthenope of CoNISMa, in the framework of Ritmare, hosts the Italian national support unit for HF radar activities, in close cooperation with the coastal radar implementation unit (led by A.Griffa), focusing on: capacity building, exchange of instruments and spare parts, exchange of experts and expertise, sharing of QA/QC/validation procedures, intercalibration, best practices, (attempt to) solution to issues of common interest.

Harmonization and definition of standard QA/QC Definition of QA/QC standards for coastal radars is a complex and open problem Goal: collect best practice information and open common discussion with other existing network First step: definition of a matrix describing QA/QC steps, presently filled out by participants - Installation and harwdare set up Partner practices Best practices - Algorithms for radial velocity retrieving - Radial analysis - Algorithms from radial to total velocities - Total velocity analysis - Validation

Interoperability protocols: data format Definition of NetCDF format for radial and total velocities compliant with: > CF-1.6 convention > US HF radar community (ROWG) recommendations Visualization and access to radial and total velocity maps: > THREDDS architecture (UNIDATA compliant)

Interoperability protocols: NetCDF data dissemination Real Time dissemination on THREDDS (IT infrastructure provided by CNR-ISAC within SP5-WP2 for preliminary tests) Visualization tools: > GODIVA 2 (browser based) > NetCDF-Java ToolsUI (webstart) > Integrated Data Viewer (webstart) Data access protocols: > OpenDAP > WMS > NetCDFSubset
