5 Beyond: MASS Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship (MASS) For the purpose of the scoping exercise, Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship (MASS) is defined as a ship which, to a varying degree, can operate independent of human interaction. (MSC99/WP.9) Digital communication is the key for MASS. 5

11 Conclusions e-navigation is the right way but needs to see the beyond. Harmonized development of digital technologies should be done by technical bodies not regulatory bodies. IALA should continue the development of e-navigation but not stick to e-navigation. Development of maritime digital infrastructure may be marketdriven. 11
