ANASAC, September 20, 2012 Construction Mark McKinnon Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope Very Long Baseline Array
Antennas at the AOS 64 of 66 antennas at the site (25 NA, 16 EA, 23 EU) 53 antennas accepted (24 NA, 16 EA, 13 EU) 44 through AIV All EA antennas conditionally accepted as of Aug 23, antennas at the AOS (18 NA, 12 EA, 10 EU) ANASAC, September 20,
Vertex Antennas - I 24 Vertex antennas accepted. DV24 conditionally accepted on Sep 12, 2012 DV25 Panel installation and photogrammetry complete. Acceptance delayed until mid-oct due to late delivery of encoder Tiltmeter replacement Ethanol-based electrolyte freezes at low temperatures Replaced with methanol-based solution Completed on 22 antennas Surface adjuster replacement Over-torqued adjusters caused depressions in antenna surface Revised installation procedure for proper torque Completed on all affected antennas (DV01-DV11)in Aug ANASAC, September 20,
Vertex Antennas - II DV25 from Kilgore on Apr 10 (above) DV25 BUS install on Jul 9 (left) Kilgore project team (lower left) Kilgore integration team (below) ANASAC, September 20,
Surface Imperfections on Vertex Antennas - I Astro -holography conducted at AOS shows temperature-dependent imperfections in surfaces of some Vertex antennas ( um RMS/deg C) Surface pattern appears astigmatic In some cases, magnitude of astigmatic term approaches 25um RMS However, term is not necessarily a proxy for total surface RMS AEM antennas show similar, but smaller effect (< 0.5 um RMS/deg C) Tests indicate effect not due to subreflector or receiver Tower -holography at OSF also indicates temporal dependence Next steps Correct astro-holography analysis for inadvertent inclusion of holography feed correction and report results as total surface RMS to Vertex Consolidate results on temporal dependence from tower holography and report as total surface RMS to Vertex Vertex committed to resolving problem; test preliminary ideas on DV12 ANASAC, September 20,
Surface Imperfections on Vertex Antennas - II Astigmatism component vs temperature, DV08 Difference map of DV02 T = 9.3 C elev = ~20 deg t = 3 hours ANASAC, September 20,
Optical Pointing Telescope (OPT) OPTs used to verify pointing performance of antennas. Prototype units now in use for NA and EU antennas OPT design revised to minimize thermal effects Status of 4 remaining units Units 1-3 at OSF Factory acceptance completed at vendor facility in Tucson On-antenna tests for Unit 1 completed; JAO acceptance to be held upon delivery of test report Unit 4 assembled; deliver to OSF after factory acceptance ANASAC, September 20,
Nutator Chopping secondary (5) used for total power measurements Delayed due to issues with servo control of secondary and stiffness of mirror back plate Factory acceptance of first unit still scheduled for mid-oct 2012 Anticipate on-antenna tests in Nov Four remaining units to ship to Chile in Jan 2013 Three mirrors at coating vendor (CMA) in Tucson for resurfacing using new 3-layer process. CRE to document changes in nutator performance specifications in preparation. ANASAC, September 20,
Site AOS Roads All 67km completed in late Apr JAO acceptance review on Nov 1 AOS Utilities (fiber and electrical power to antenna stations) Utilities work estimated at 85% complete as of Aug 31 Contractor remobilized to site this month after Chilean winter Estimate completion in Dec arbitration cases resulting from termination of original Utilities contract E&K vs AUI: E&K sought ~$5M for profit loss & damages Resolved in AUI s favor on May 30; no reparations due E&K AUI vs E&K insurance company, for refusing to pay performance guarantee (~$1M) on contract termination. Process terminated on Jul 31 with no decision New process to be initiated; use E&K result as supporting evidence ANASAC, September 20,
Front End 59 assembled Front Ends (FEs) delivered to Chile (22 EA, 20 NA, 17 EU) NA FEIC assembly status: 20 of 22 NA FEs shipped to Chile 2 remaining units to ship in Sep 2012 Delivery of NA FE components complete! Production of Band 3 CCAs completed in Feb 2012 Production of Band 6 CCAs completed in Aug NA FEs on schedule despite delay caused by ITAR export control issue. NA could not deliver FEs and components or have technical discussions with partners until issue resolved. US Department of State determined that FEs are not subject to ITAR export control on Jun 15 Plan developed to ship FE test measurement system from NA FEIC to OSF Integration of Band 4, 8 & 10 to occur at OSF, instead of EU & NA FEICs ANASAC, September 20,
Band 3 CCAs HIA Feb 20, 2012 ANASAC, September 20,
Front End Service Vehicle (FESV) FESVs (2) are used to transport FEs to/from AOS antennas/osf. Fabricated in Taiwan FESV1 accepted on Aug 30, 2011 FESV2 accepted Dec14, 2011 ANASAC, September 20,
Front End Handling Vehicle (FEHV) Custom cart (4) designed to move FEs between the FESV and antennas Designed and fabricated in Chile CDR on December16 Antenna IPTs confirmed antennas can accommodate additional weight of FEHV In process of verifying maneuverability within AEM antennas Deliver 4 months after delta-cdr Pallet jack used in interim ANASAC, September 20,
Backend, Correlator, and Computing Backend (BE) Central Local Oscillator Article completed in Aug 2011 All BE components delivered Correlator Fourth quadrant installed in AOS Technical Building Turnover to CSV to occur on Sep 21 Computing Currently restricted to 32 antenna operation because of memory allocation problem. Software modification underway. Final release of software (R9.1) under the construction project is now in use by CSV R9.1 to be implemented for Cycle 0 observations by Oct 3 ANASAC, September 20,
