A. The ICA Supplement List located in the Introduction section of each manual listed in the REVISIONS table will indicate the incorporation status as of the release date of the published revision. B. The manual revision level of the supplement incorporation will be listed in the"manual Incorporation Status" column in the ICA Supplement List, when those ICAs associated with that manual have been incorporated. After ICAs are incorporated, the manual that they are incorporated in must now be used for those ICAs instead of the supplement. Based on revision cycle times for the affected manuals, MM ICAs, WDM ICAs, etc. in this supplement may be incorporated in the manuals at different times. There will not be a revision to this supplement to indicate incorporation in the manuals. Users are required to check the ICA Supplement List for each manual affected to determine incorporation status. C. 27 1. General CAS-67A/67B TRAFFIC ALERT AND COLLISION AVOIDANCE SYSTEM (TCAS II) - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION (ForAirplanes-0001 thru-0160 Incorporating SBS ) A. The CAS-67A/67B Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS II), Traffic Advisory (TA), Resolution Advisory(RA),and Vertical Speed Indicator(VSI)shows visual traffic advisories to the flight crew on the TCAS II display. An interrogation of every transponder-equipped airplane in range ofthetcasiisystemwillshowitsbearingandaltitudedata. Thisdatacalculatesaflightpathfor collision avoidance. Non-airborne reporting intruders will also be sensed and monitored by the TCAS IIsystem. 2. Description A. The CAS-67A/67B TCAS II system supplies traffic alert functions without support from Air Traffic Control(ATC) ground stations. The CAS-67A/67B TCAS II system uses dual MST-67A Transponders. B. The system supplies safe separation between the airplane in which it is installed and other aircraft equipped with Mode S, Mode C, or Mode A/C transponders. C. The TCAS II system monitors airspace that surrounds the airplane by interrogations and replies from transponders in other aircraft. Interrogation reply enables TCAS II to compute the information about the intruders that follows: (1) Range between the airplane and intruder (2) Relative bearing to the intruder (3) Altitudeandverticalspeedoftheintruder, ifaltitudeisreported (4) Closingratebetweentheintruderandtheairplane (5) SendaTAwhentrafficintheareaistooneartotheairplane (6) SendaRAtokeepsafeverticalseparationiftheintrudercontinuestoapproach (7) Monitor 45 aircraft, display up to 30, and coordinate a resolution advisory for up to three intruders atthesametime. D. System components include a TPU-67A/67B Processor, CM-67A Configuration Module, Top and Bottom TCAS II Antennas, MST-67A Transponder(Mode S) and antennas, PS-578A Transponder/ TCAS II Control Head, TCAS II, TA/RA/VSI display Transponder Programming Module(Mode-S Relay Box), and system annunciators, found on the center instrument panel. E. Before you perform TCAS system self-test, make sure that the following aircraft systems are powered and operating with no failure flags on the appropriate cockpit instruments: (1) Mode S transponder system (2) Encoding Altitude Sources(Air Data Systems) (3) Radio Altimeter systems (4) Attitude(VerticalGyro)systems (5) Heading(Compass)systems 3. Operation A. The TCAS II processor sets the directional antenna beams, makes and moves pulsed 1030 MHz surveillance interrogation data through the top and bottom TCAS antennas, and receives 1090 MHz reply data from transponders via the TCAS antennas. The TCAS processor examines reply data and calculates the threat potential of intruder aircraft. B. The information that follows about the airplane is regularly read and stored in the TCAS II processor. (1) Airplane heading(pitch, roll, and radio altimeter) inputs. This information, along with pressure altitude data, lets the TCAS II calculate the airplane s position and flight path, which is used during advisory and traffic display computations. (2) Pressure altitude is sent to the transponder from the airplane s pressure altitude source. (3) Pressure altitude is usedto find the airplane s flight level altitude in relation to the intruder s reported altitude Page1

(5) AirplanemaximumairspeedissenttotheTCASIIprocessorandusedinmaximumclosingrate projections. C. The TCAS II processor has functions that find range, bearing, and altitude of intruder aircraft from information calculated from or contained in reply messages. The altitude can only be found if the intruder reports altitude in its transponder s reply message. D. From the use of transponder reply data, the TCAS II processor makes an analysis of the threat potential of the intruder. This is done by a calculation of the position of the intruder and the rate the intruder nears a collision. From this evaluation, the TCAS II processor categorizes the intruder as a non-threat, proximity, or traffic advisory. E. For traffic advisory-category aircraft, the TCAS II processor supplies traffic advisory symbol position andalertdatatothetcasdisplay. TheTCASIIprocessoralsooutputstrafficadvisoryalertvoice messages through the cockpit audio system. F. For proximity and non-threat aircraft, TCAS II processor supplies proximity or non-threat traffic symbol position data to TCAS display. Voice alerts are not given for proximity or non-threat category aircraft. G.
