2 Alan Freed, Pittsburgh area professional photographer, provided an interesting program to ABCPS members at the June 21, 2010 meeting. Freed s program described how he obtains dramatic sports photos from the sidelines of Pittsburgh Steelers games for publication in the Punxsutawney Spirit newspaper. For great sports shots, Freed suggests: 1. Shoot wide open for shallow depth of field 2. Shutter speed no slower than 1/ Use continuous focus mode 4. Consider using an Expo Disk, a white balance filter-sized circle 5. Bump ISO to 1600 for night games Click HERE for Alan Freed s Website Long-time ABCPS member, David W. Seidel, recently published another historic Altoona book. In Dave s own words: The book was released June 14th at $21.99 per copy. The royalties from this Altoona book have been donated to the Blair County Historical Society. As you know, the royalties of the first book Altoona & Logan Valley Electric Railway, co-authored with Leonard Alwine, were donated to the Horseshoe Curve Chapter, National Railway Historical Society; The royalties from the second book Horseshoe Curve were donated to Railroader's Memorial Museum. This book carries the title Altoona and differs from the Altoona book by Sr. Anne Frances Pulling in that the source material is strictly from vintage postcards rather than historical photographs and is published under Arcadia Publishing Co. ( Postcard History Series. It will be available at most traditional book outlets such as Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com as well as other local outlets such as the gift shop of Railroader's Memorial Museum, some of the Hallmark stores etc. or at You can search by title or author. 4 Depth of Field has been a topic of discussion lately at our meetings so briefly, here is a short tip on what it is and how to control DOF. If you Google the term, Depth of Field, there are many websites that will further explain the effect. Chances are not everything in your picture will be the same distance from the camera. In some cases, you want as much of the photo in focus as possible (when shooting a group of people for instance), but in other cases you can help draw attention to the one subject in focus by having the rest of the background out of focus and therefore blurry (most commonly used in portraits & sports). The following two photos demonstrate the difference. In both cases, the camera focused on the red car in front. Depth of Field is easiest to control if you use a D-SLR, but you can still obtain great photos with a point & shoot digital. For shallow depth of field, use Portrait mode. It s set by default to blur the background because of a wide open aperture. You can also get shallow depth of field by zooming the telephoto all the way in on your subject. You may have to step back a few steps but the background will again blur. Choosing the Landscape mode will result in greater depth of field as will zooming to the widest angle. Shallow depth of field 1/30th of a second exposure f 3.5 apertures value For shallow depth of field: Set the aperture wide open: f1.8 or f2 Get as close to the primary subject as possible. You'll need lots of light. You may have to increase the ISO setting.. Greater depth of field 1.5 second exposure f 22 aperture value :For greater depth of field Set the aperture stopped down:. F16 or f22 The farther away you are, the greater the depth of field. A longer exposure will maximize the depth of field; you may need a tripod, or other steady surface for your camera. Club members have heard discussions lately about the digital technique of combining multiple images at various exposures into one final image. The technique is called HDR, High Dynamic Range. The link below is the software Photomatix that many club members are now using to obtain properly exposed images from scenes that have dramatic shadows and highlights. Not everybody trusts paintings but people believe photographs Ansel Adams July-August 2010 Page 4 from the ABCPS
