3 ` Macro shots can be very difficult to capture. Using manual focus is the only way to get clear shots. By using a continuous light source and special macro filters, I was able to take pictures of subjects that are rarely seen with such detail. There are also two crucial factors to keep in mind when capturing macro shots. First, zoom your lens in to at least 70mm. This helps to define the details of subjects. Second, use manual focus exclusively. Automatic focus will not be able to focus specifically enough. MACR O

4 This shot came from a cemetery on the edge of Rexburg, Idaho. By ducking under some trees, the branches at the top served as a source of framing for the shot. In addition, placing the sun partially behind a tree in the distance helped balance the shot. These techniques helped to compensate for the fact that this shot was taken about a half an hour before golden hour usually starts. L ANDSCAPE

5 This image comes from a ghost town called Bannack in Montana. Creating this image was as simple as taking a few photos and combining parts of each in post-production. CONCEPTUAL

6 While in Bannack, I decided to take a five photo series of windowsills. More specifically, I wanted to capture he windowsills that encapsulated the idea of a ghost town. I went around to different buildings around town and did my best to find interesting angles and the dirtiest, most cobweb infested spots. SER I E S

7 Several models joined us in Bannack in order to pose for some portrait shots. This was a great chance to practice using different auxiliary lights and reflectors. Two of these shots (left, top right) were captured using speedlights and one (bottom right) was taken in natural light Using speedlights made for much clearer shots that required a lot less post-production work. 8 I took this photo on the top floor of a building that served as a school for children. I captured this using the bracketing technique and combining the three images in Photoshop. Bracketing captures 3 pictures at the same time. One is slightly underexposed, another has the same exposure as the camera s current settings, and the third is slightly overexposed. F I NE A R T

9 In the course of taking portrait shots in Bannack, we came across a bottle of bourbon in a tavern. I decided to take the opportunity to create an advertisement with that bottle. After editing the picture in Lightroom, I took it into Illustrator and added the logo. The most difficult party was recreating the Bulleit Bourbon logo even though I didn t have access to the font that was used for the original logo. COMMERCIAL

10 Shallow depth of field is defined by a lower aperture (f-stop) setting and a blurred background (bokeh). When a lens has a wider opening (low aperture) it lets in more light. That s what causes the background to blur. To capture these shots, I set my f-stop to a low setting of 5.6. By zooming my lens in a bit and focusing on either the headstone or the treeline, I chose what would be in focus and what would be blurred. S H A LLOW DEPTH

11 Conversely, deep depth of field is defined by a high aperture (f-stop) setting and a sharp, focused image throughout. When a lens has a smaller opening (high aperture), the amount of light let in is less, keeping everything in the photo the same level of focused. When capturing these shots I used high f-stop settings of 22 (right) and 16 (left). Since everything was already in focus, all I had to do was zoom in a bit and find an interesting subject.
