Chapter 3 Quick start Startig GerbTool Creatig a ew aperture list I order to help you get started quickly, this chapter provides a quick overview of GerbTool ad its processes. A more comprehesive descriptio for each GerbTool fuctio is provided i chapters 4 through 8. To start GerbTool, choose GerbTool from the Tools meu i the OrCAD Layout sessio frame. GerbTool s most basic fuctio is to read a Gerber file ito memory ad display it graphically o your scree. A aperture list file describes the shape ad size of all the apertures used i the Gerber file. GerbTool automatically reads aperture list files from Layout. O Note Aperture list files are ot required for exteded Gerber, FIRE9000 or EIE format Gerber files, as they are embedded i the Gerber file. You ca also create your ow aperture list files. There are two ways to do this. The easiest method is to covert your CAD aperture list ito GerbTool format. Therefore, if you have a aperture list that is i a format listed i the table o the ext page, you simply specify this as your aperture list ad GerbTool automatically coverts it for you. O Note You do ot eed to covert aperture list files created by Layout (or by OrCAD PCB 386+). OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide 5

Chapter 3 Quick start Covertig a CAD aperture list If, o the other had, you do ot have a CAD aperture list, you ca eter a ew, oexistig fileame whe you specify a aperture list ad let GerbTool create it for you. Although it will iitially be empty, GerbTool creates ew apertures as eeded whe readig i your Gerber file. You ca the edit the aperture list, chagig the shapes ad sizes to meet the eeds of your Gerber file. GerbTool provides aperture list coversio for most of the CAD ad photoplotter aperture list formats i use today. The coversio process traslates a CAD aperture list directly ito GerbTool format, thereby reducig data-etry-related problems. Agai, remember that you do ot eed to covert aperture files created by Layout. The followig table shows the aperture list formats supported by GerbTool, alog with the ame of the Aperture Coversio Rule (ACR) file used for the coversio. Status bar Tool tips Desig files GerbTool displays commad status ad prompts i this area. Whe you hold the mouse cursor over a toolbar butto for a few secods, a small popup widow appears with a short descriptio of the feature. GerbTool uses desig files. A desig file, as created by GerbTool (or Layout), cotais iformatio about the Gerber files, ad their associated aperture list files, that costitute a sigle PCB. This usually icludes fileames for ier ad outer sigal layers, silkscree layers, soldermask layers, ad so o. GerbTool also associates a operatig eviromet with each desig file. Thus, whe you load a existig desig file, GerbTool restores the eviromet to the state it was i whe you last saved the desig file. This elimiates the eed to cotiually recofigure GerbTool each time you load a desig. Aperture list files O Note The default file extesio for desig files is cofigurable ad is easily chaged usig the Cofigure commad o the Optios meu. Layout uses a.gtd extesio for these files. Aperture list files defie the characteristics of each Gerber D-Code used i a desig. For each D-Code the aperture list file defies a shape, size, type, ad NC drill tool umber (see Chapter 7: Commad referece). GerbTool stores aperture lists i ASCII format. This makes it easy to create ad modify aperture lists. It also allows easy coversio from most CAD system aperture lists. & See For details of the aperture list format, alog with a example aperture list, see Appedix B: Aperture list file format. O Note The default file extesio for aperture list files is cofigurable. You ca chage it usig the Cofigure commad o the Optios meu. Layout uses a.app extesio for aperture list files it creates. You ca ed a commad, or ed at least oe level of a multistep commad, by pressig the ESC key or right mouse butto. 18 OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide

Chapter 5 Performace tips This chapter provides tips for obtaiig optimal performace from GerbTool. Speedig up GerbTool operatios Usig shortcut keys Shortcut keys are a powerful feature of GerbTool. These keys are available ay time GerbTool is waitig for you to eter a coordiate (poit) or wheever it is idle (that is, whe o commad has bee selected). Usig these keys you ca sap to the ceter of a database item, chage which layers are viewed, udo edits, ad so o. & See For a complete list of available shortcut keys, see Chapter 4: GerbTool basics. Iterruptig, redrawig, ad highlightig You ca speed up ay commad that redraws the database or highlights a group of items by cacelig the drawig process. Click the right butto or press the ESC key to halt the redraw. This does t affect the operatio of the commad; it affects oly the redraw. Oce you re comfortable with the operatio of GerbTool commads you will fid that this ability sigificatly speeds thigs up. Udoig edits The Udo commad provides a high level of freedom whe makig database edits. You ca experimet ad try differet edits without fear of data loss. Sice udo is available as the shortcut key U, you ca udo edits immediately without havig to exit the curret commad. Udo works for all edits regardless of size, ad there is o limit to the umber of edits you ca udo. Remember to eable the udo capability with the Cofigure commad (Optios meu) before makig your edits, the use the Edit meu s Udo commad or the shortcut key U to udo as ecessary. Programmig mouse buttos ad fuctio keys OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide 19

Chapter 5 Performace tips GerbTool s easy-to-use graphical user iterface is further ehaced with the versatility of programmable mouse buttos ad fuctio keys. Usig the Cofigure commad o the Optios meu, you ca program the mouse butto ad fuctio keys F1 through F12 with commads that you frequetly use. 20 OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide

Chapter 6 Uses for GerbTool Layer aligmet This chapter provides several examples of uses for GerbTool. Layer aligmet ivolves liig up all layers so that whe you view multiple layers simultaeously, they are correctly aliged. Proper layer aligmet is also crucial to the successful creatio of a multilayer etlist. First select a master layer with which all other layers should be aliged ad select a item o that layer to use as a referece poit. Choose the Alig commad from the Edit meu ad select the item you chose as a referece poit. The, select a item o each layer to be aliged that correspods to the referece poit. As you select each item, GerbTool aligs the all other layers to the master layer. 6 Tip You ca use the shortcut zoom i, zoom out, ad pa keys (see Chapter 4: GerbTool basics) to locate the referece ad correspodig items. Creatig NC drill files Use the Drill commad o the Tools meu to create a NC Drill file from ay layer. Choose the format for the drill file by choosig the NC Format butto withi the Drill editig dialog box (show i Chapter 7: Commad referece). Usually, the layer you choose to create a drill file from represets the pad master for the etire desig. Whe creatig NC Drill files, GerbTool traslates the Gerber flashes (except targets ad thermals) ito drill hits. The Tool field, i the correspodig aperture list for the selected layer, determies the tool call-out for each drill hit. O Note Use the Report commad from the Apertures meu to determie if you have a tool assiged to each flash. Edit the aperture list, if required, so all flashes are assiged a tool. GerbTool the optimizes the drill hits, accordig to your specificatios, for fastest throughput. OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide 21

Chapter 6 Uses for GerbTool Importig drill files Perform paelizatio prior to executig the Tools meu s Drill commad. If your drillig equipmet has a small memory capacity, perform a virtual paelizatio. This allows GerbTool to isert the eeded step ad repeat codes ito the output drill file. Preferably, if your drillig equipmet has eough memory, you should perform a ormal o-virtual paelizatio. This results i a fully optimized pael for the maximum drillig efficiecy. Use the Drill commad from the Import meu to load a NC Drill file ito the active layer. Layout creates a drill file, THRUHOLE.TAP, that you ca import i order to automatically iclude the drill iformatio for your desig. You ca also create a ew empty layer first by selectig the Create commad from the Layers meu. Make sure that the layer you choose is the active layer. Whe loadig a NC drill file, GerbTool coverts the drill hits ito Gerber flashes. Each tool called out i the drill file is located i the aperture list for the active layer. If GerbTool ca t fid a tool, it adds a aperture to the list with a Ukow shape ad the correct tool assigmet. You ca the edit the aperture to correct the shape, size, ad so o. O Note Use the Report commad (from the Apertures meu) to determie if ay apertures were added. Those added are highlighted. Paelizig With GerbTool, paelizig is a simple, oe-step process whe usig the Auto Pael feature. After activatig the layers to be paelized (oly), select the Paelize commad from the Tools meu, esure that the Auto Pael butto is selected (show i Chapter 7: Commad referece), ad eter the miimum image border-to-border spacig i the X ad Y fields. The spacig you specify should be betwee adjoiig edges of the iteded images. GerbTool automatically calculates the maximum umber of images that will fit iside the curret film box. After askig for cofirmatio, GerbTool completes the paelizatio process. Depedig o the settig of the Virtual butto, GerbTool either copies the proper umber of images ito the database or otes the umber of copies ad their locatio for display purposes. O Note You ca use the right mouse butto or press the ESC key to stop the drawig process aytime durig the paelizig process. This usually provides a oticeable improvemet i the overall time to complete the paelizig process without affectig the fiished pael i ay way. 22 OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide

Chapter 6 Uses for GerbTool Viewig or pritig Gerber 274-D composite layers You ca use black ad white for layer colors, to provide accurate viewig of composite power ad groud layers. Settig the egative layer to white o a black backgroud ad the positive layers to black results i a realistic depictio of the fial film. O Note The egative layer must superimpose the positive layer. Mergig desigs To prit a composite layer, view your composite layers as described above, the use the Prit commad (from the File meu). The prited image appears o the page exactly as it does i the display. O Note Sice the image for pritig is created i a high resolutio off-scree bitmap, the film box ad display grid may appear o the output page. You ca disable this by settig the film box color to the backgroud color usig the Film box commad (Optios meu) ad disablig the display of the grid usig the Grid commad (Optios meu), or shortcut key G. You ca merge two or more desigs ito a sigle Gerber file so they ca be photoplotted simultaeously. This reduces maufacturig costs by makig full use of photoplot film. I order to merge desigs i this maer, the followig coditios must exist: Each file must be i the same Gerber format ad have the same m. values, ad zero suppressio. & See For iformatio o Gerber formats, see the discussio of the File meu s Format commad i Chapter 7: Commad referece. Each file must use the same aperture list. That is, the size ad shape of each D- Code must be the same i each aperture list. The respective layers i each desig must be the same. For example, layer 1 of each desig must be the silkscree, layer 2 of each desig must be the top layer, ad so o. To merge desig files 1 From the File meu choose the Ope commad ad select the.gtd file for the first desig. GerbTool displays a list of layers i the Layers-Edit dialog box. 2 Choose the OK butto. GerbTool displays the desig at coordiates 0:0 i the lower left of the Film Box. 3 From the Edit meu, choose the Scale commad. The Scale ad/or Offset Layers dialog box appears. Choose the desired offset value. 4 Select All Visible from the Layers drop dow list. OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide 23

Chapter 6 Uses for GerbTool 5 Choose the OK butto. GerbTool respods with a error message: Commad caot be udoe. Cotiue? 6 Choose Yes. This shifts the first desig. 7 From the File meu, choose Merge ad the choose Desig. I the Merge Desig dialog box, choose the secod desig. The secod file appears i the film box. O Note OrCAD recommeds that you merge oly Gerber 274-D files. Draw pads Occasioally, CAD systems may output a irregularly shaped or sized pad usig multiple draws to fill i the shape, rather tha a more efficiet sigle flash. This results i larger Gerber files tha ecessary ad icreases processig times. Also, it is virtually impossible for high-level CAM tools such as DRC to recogize the draw pads as true pads, rather tha as collectios of traces. The differece betwee a typical draw pad ad a comparable flash is show below. Draw Pad Flash Draw pad versus a flash. The draw pad i this example requires 27 separate Gerber commads to accomplish what oe Gerber flash ca accomplish. Thus, if you have 2000 of these draw flashes, you ll have a Gerber file with at least 54,000 lies whe flashes could accomplish the same thig i oly 2000 flashes. Usig the Pads commad from the Covert meu, you ca covert all your draw pads to flashes. You do this by idetifyig oe occurrece of a draw pad ad allowig GerbTool to fid all draw pads that match. Ad, to icrease GerbTool s ability to recogize matchig draw pads, you ca specify a tolerace value to compesate for some CAD systems roud-off errors. By specifyig a tolerace, you allow GerbTool to relax its criteria for determiig matchig draw pads. 6 Tip Covertig draw pads to flashes should be the first thig you do to your desigs. This usually esures trouble-free coversio. Also, you must covert all draw pads to flashes before geeratig a etlist or ruig most other CAM tools. 24 OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide

Chapter 6 Uses for GerbTool Automatic silkscree clea-up GerbTool has the ability to automatically clea up a silkscree where lies touch or are too close to the pads. Usig the Fix Silkscree commad from the Tools meu, you specify the layer(s) that the silkscree ad pad master are o ad the miimum spacig that must be maitaied betwee the silkscree data ad the pads. If you wat, you ca use widow mode to clea up isolated areas rather tha the etire silkscree layer. GerbTool the cleas up all areas where silkscree lies are too close to a pad. Each offedig lie is moved just eough to elimiate the violatio. & See also For more iformatio o silkscree cleaup, ad to see before ad after illustratios, see Chapter 7: Commad referece. Creatig a soldermask layer Creatig a soldermask is a simple ad easy process usig the Scale commad, from the D-Code selectio o the Edit meu. First, create the soldermask layer by copyig the pad master layer oto a ew layer. Use the Copy commad to copy the pad master to the ew layer. Whe copyig, select Create Layer from the Copy to Layer fields drop-dow list. This creates a ew layer for the ew soldermask data. Now, select the Scale commad, eter a scale factor for X ad Y ad select the Fixed Amout field i the D-Code Scale dialog box, the choose the OK butto. GerbTool adds apertures to the correspodig aperture lists as ecessary ad replaces the D- Codes with the ew scaled D-Codes. The origial D-Codes withi the aperture lists are ot modified. Trascodig Usig the Trascode commad (from the D-Code selectio o the Edit meu), you ca trascode (trasform D-Code) item by item or by selectig a group. Usig selectio criteria, you ca choose exactly which D-Codes are trascoded. For example, to trascode oly draws with a D-Code of D18 o layer 4 ad withi a particular widow, specify the selectio criteria as show i the followig example: OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide 25

Chapter 6 Uses for GerbTool Restrictive selectio criteria. Soma pad ad trace filletig After selectig ad highlightig the D-Codes, GerbTool prompts you for the ew D- Code ad the performs the actual trascodig. Soma is a highly cofigurable dialog box that specifies a method of optimizig pad/trace juctio poits. This is ofte referred to as filletig or teardroppig (see Appedix C: Soma cocepts for a techical descriptio of Soma). The purpose of Soma is to icrease your maufacturig yield by addig more copper i the area of the pad/trace juctio, thereby elimiatig ay possible pad/trace separatio. Soma is used primarily whe dealig with small pads ad traces (such as micro vias i the 30 mils or less rage) but ca be used aywhere to prevet pad/trace separatio. Soma provides additioal versatility by allowig you cotrol of the size ad locatio of the geerated Soma pads, alog with a itegral DRC to elimiate ay possible spacig violatios. & See For a complete descriptio of how to use the Soma tool, see Chapter 7: Commad referece. J Trivia Soma derives its uusual ame from the appearace of a Soma pad placed o top of a host pad, which resembles a real sowma. 26 OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide

Commad referece This chapter provides details for usig each GerbTool commad. File meu New The File meu selectio displays commads for dealig primarily with files ad directories. The meu commads are described i the followig sectios. The New commad presets the New Desig Wizard as show below. New Desig Wizard. Desig Name Eter a fileame for the ew desig file. Desig Folder Usig the Browse butto you ca browse to the folder that cotais the data files that you wat loaded ito the ew desig. Clickig o the Next butto moves you to the ext step ad presets you with a choice of two modes: Automatic ad Maual. OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide 27

Commad referece Automatic Whe you select Auto mode, GerbTool builds a desig file for you automatically. You specify the source folder ad GerbTool determies which files are Gerber or aperture lists. The Gerber fileames are sorted first alphabetically, ad the by layer umber, if oe is foud. If a aperture list is foud that is ot already i GerbTool format, GerbTool tries each cofigured aperture list coverter util a match is foud. Fially, each aperture list is matched to a suitable Gerber fileame. GerbTool the displays the Edit dialog box where you ca make ay fial adjustmets, if ecessary. O Note This commad is affected by the umber of aperture coverters cofigured ad by the fileame extesios that are igored. I geeral, fewer aperture list coverters ad more igored fileame extesios result i faster performace. Maual Whe you select Maual mode, GerbTool creates a empty desig file for you, ad the displays the Edit dialog box for you to eter the Gerber files ad aperture lists. Ope Close Save Save As This commad displays the file chooser ad prompts you for a desig file to load. You ca use a wildcard specificatio to obtai a list of files from which to choose. After you specify a desig file to load, GerbTool displays the Edit dialog box where you ca defie or modify the layer structure ad, if eeded, defie or chage the Gerber iput format specificatio. This commad closes the curret desig. Select this commad to save the curret desig file, ad optioally, ay modified layers or aperture lists. This commad does ot close the curret desig; you ca cotiue to work o it after savig. You must use this commad, Save As, or Save All to save modified layer data. Select this commad to save the curret desig file uder a differet fileame ad optioally ay modified layers or aperture lists. This commad does ot close the curret desig; you may cotiue to work o it after savig. 28 OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide

Commad referece Save All Format Select this meu item to save the curret desig ad all modified layers or aperture lists. This commad does ot close the curret desig; you may cotiue to work o it after savig. This meu selectio has two commads: Gerber ad Drill. Whe you select oe of these commads, GerbTool displays a format dialog box i which you set the global formats for the file type i questio. O Note GerbTool supports both global ad local formats. Global formats apply to all layers that do ot have a local format assiged to them. Use this commad to edit the global formats oly. See the Edit commad i the Layers meu for more iformatio o local formats. Typical format dialog box. You ca specify the correct format for that type of file (i this example, Gerber) by chagig the settigs i a format dialog box. The illustratio above shows a Gerber Format editig dialog box, which icludes the followig fields: Dialect Idicates the specific format of the Gerber laguage such as RS-274-D, exteded Gerber, FIRE9xxx, ad EIE. If i doubt, choose RS-274-D. OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide 29

Commad referece m. Coordiate format such as 2.3. This specifies 2 decimal digits before a implied decimal poit, ad 3 followig (for example, represets if the coordiate format is 2.3). Because of limitatios i the represetatio of arcs i Gerber format, it is best to use at least a 3.4 coordiate precisio for desigs that iclude arcs. Termiator Idicates the block termiator (EOB). Use \r to idicate a carriage retur (ASCII 13) ad \ to idicate a lie feed (ASCII 10). Mode Choose Absolute or Icremetal (see Glossary for descriptios of these terms). Zero suppressio Idicates whether leadig zeros or trailig zeros are suppressed, or there is o zero suppressio. G commads Idicates whether GerbTool icludes G commads (for example, G01) whe you output Gerber files. Special You ca eable Modal compressio to reduce the size of your files by removig all redudat draft codes ad coordiates. Or, you ca eable Metric mode idicatig that your files are i metric format. You ca also specify whether all circular iterpolated arcs should be cosidered 360 or quadrat, eable the savig of G04 commets, eable the output of UserData iformatio, eable the output of Netlist iformatio embedded withi the Gerber file(s), ad specify that carriage returs ad lie feeds should be hoored as block termiators. You ca toggle betwee metric ad ich format, as well as chage m. formats after loadig a desig. If you chage formats after loadig, all layers are marked as modified. M Cautio If you chage formats after loadig ad do ot save all layers, the ext time you load that desig, the saved format may ot match that of the usaved Gerber files. Selectig the Netlist butto tells GerbTool to save etlist iformatio withi the Gerber file. If you have previously saved a Gerber file with etlist iformatio, you ca remove it by deselectig the Netlist butto ad savig. O Note It is importat that you specify the correct format before loadig a ew desig. The critical format items are m., mode, ad trailig zeros. If you load a desig with a icorrect format, GerbTool will display it with upredictable results. If you iadvertetly load a desig this way, reload the desig ad click o the Format butto of the Edit dialog box to correct the format. 30 OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide

Commad referece Merge The Merge commad has two modes: Desig ad Gerber. O Note All merge commads require that you esure the critical format items (mode, m. ad zero suppressio) of the file or files beig merged match those of the curretly loaded desig. Desig Selectig this commad allows aother complete desig to be merged layer by layer ito the curret desig. If a layer from the exteral desig does t exist i the curret desig, you will be prompted to create a ew layer. Gerber Use this commad to merge a Gerber file ito the curretly active layer. GerbTool prompts you for a fileame. You ca use a wildcard specificatio to obtai a list of files from which to choose. The specified fileame is ot added to the list of loaded layers. Rather, the cotets of the file are read i ad appeded to the active layer. Import The Import commad has a umber of optios: BARCO DPF, HPGL, IPC-D-356, Drill ad DXF. BARCO DPF Use this commad to import oe or more BARCO files ito the curretly loaded desig. This commad begis importig the specified files ito the active layer if it is empty. If it is ot empty, GerbTool creates a ew layer followig the active layer. GerbTool creates as may layers as ecessary to import all the files you specify. O Note Oce a BARCO DPF file is imported ito a layer it effectively becomes Gerber data ad will ideed be saved as Gerber if the layer is subsequetly saved. To output the layer i BARCO DPF format use the BARCO DPF commad from the Export meu. OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide 31

Commad referece HPGL Use this commad to merge a HPGL plot file ito the curretly active layer. After selectig a file to import, GerbTool displays the followig HPGL import dialog box. HPGL Import dialog box. Usig this dialog box, you ca specify the expected plot size, whether to rotate the plot data ad which D-Codes to use for each HPGL pe. IPC-D-356 Use this commad to import a IPC-D-356 etlist ito your desig. Because a IPC- D-356 etlist cotais iformatio pertaiig to pads ad ot traces, GerbTool must geerate a iteral etlist prior to importig a IPC-D-356 etlist, to esure that your database cotais a full ad complete etlist after importig. While this may soud redudat, the added beefit of a automatic etlist compariso is well worth it. The etlist compariso feature produces a report file detailig ay differeces betwee the iteral ad the imported etlists, i additio to highlightig ay differeces. Optioally, you ca update the database UserData fields with the compoet/et data from the IPC-D-356 file. The, you ca use GerbTool commads, icludig the Item Ifo commad (o the Query meu), to examie ad maipulate the true referece desigators, pi umbers, ad so o. GerbTool creates a pad for each test poit i the iput file. These pads are based o the size ad locatio of the test poits ad are placed o the active layer. It is a good idea to create a empty layer ad make it the active layer before importig a IPC- D-356 file. GerbTool coverts the IPC iformatio ito Userdata attached to the pads ad traces i the Gerber file. For pads, the format is etame:compoet(pi). For traces, oly the etame is attached. 32 OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide

Commad referece The list below shows possible error messages that ca come from importig a IPC- D-356 file: No IPC data for locatio , Layer:1 There is a pad o this layer that does ot have ay matchig IPC iformatio. No Gerber data for locatio , ID 45: () idx 43 There was a IPC-D-356 record for this locatio, but o Gerber data. Gerber Net Re-assigmet: GerbTool et 78 Locatios: , ad , IPC ets 55:() 171:() The IPC file has tried to associate the 2 ets, 55:() ad 171:(), to the GerbTool et umber 78. IPC Net Re-assigmet: GerbTool ets Locatios: , ad , IPC et 78:() The IPC file has tried to give the same et iformatio 78:() to the GerbTool ets 123 ad 250. Drill Use this commad to import a NC Drill file oto the active layer. O Note This commad requires that you esure the critical format items (mode, m. ad trailig zero suppressio) for the file, or files, beig loaded match those of the curretly specified drill format. DXF Use this commad to import a DXF file ito your desig. You ca map each layer cotaied withi the DXF file to oe or more GerbTool layers. This flexibility allows you to duplicate iformatio oto multiple layers. For istace, a pad master layer might eed to be merged oto each layer cotaiig traces. Likewise, you ca map more tha oe DXF layer to a sigle GerbTool layer. You ca map layers by color so that items of the same color are merged together oto a sigle GerbTool layer. This feature ca be useful for viewig DXF files cotaiig may colors or items that do t share the same color as the DXF layer i which they appear. OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide 33

Commad referece You ca also map blocks to apertures maually, or automatically whe you export from GerbTool, if you tur o the Auto Map feature. GerbTool automatically explodes blocks that you do t map to apertures ito their idividual draw compoets. O Note Mappig blocks to equivalet apertures makes desig editig easier ad decreases the size of the database. GerbTool supports stadard SHX fot files ad SHX Uifot files, both for text ad shape etities. If text withi the DXF file refers to a fot that is ot preset o your system, or the fot file is of a urecogized type, GerbTool uses a stadard fot i its place. GerbTool displays the followig dialog box. Import DXF dialog box. Iput File Specifies the DXF file to import. Report File Specifies the report file to geerate. Fot Directory Specifies the directory for SHX fot ad shape files. Source DXF Layer Specifies the curret DXF layer you selected for mappig to zero or more destiatio layers i GerbTool. Destiatio Layer Specifies the layers that you selected to receive the cotets of the Source DXF Layer. Note that more tha oe destiatio layer ca be selected by keepig the Ctrl key pressed durig selectio. Map All to Curret Merges all DXF layers ito the curret GerbTool layer. Map by Color Select this to map DXF file items oto GerbTool layers based o 34 OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide

Commad referece color. Items of color 1 (red) appear o GerbTool layer 1, color 2 (yellow) o GerbTool layer 2, ad so o. O Note Esure that the Max Layers settig i the Geeral Cofiguratio Optios is set high eough to allow for the highest color expected (255 maximum). Items of a color umber higher tha this settig appear o the last (highest-umbered) GerbTool layer. Though may drawigs use colors 1 through 9 oly, the valid rage is 1 through 255. Map Sequetially Displays a dialog box you use to sequetially map DXF layers to GerbTool layers. You ca specify the first GerbTool layer to receive DXF layer iformatio, ad you ca exclude DXF layer 0 from the mappig. Scale Factor Specifies the scale factor GerbTool uses whe mergig. The default scale factor is 1. A desig draw usig metric uits may require that the scale factor be chaged appropriately (e.g., if the uits are millimeters, use a scale factor of.0394). Lie Width Specifies the lie width, i iches, GerbTool should use for zerowidth lies. The default width is 0.01 iches. O Note Zero-width, closed polylies create filled polygos i GerbTool. Place at Origi Specifies that GerbTool places the DXF desig with its lowerleft corer at the GerbTool origi. Clear Merge Layers Specifies that GerbTool empties all merge layers prior to importig DXF iformatio. Create Apertures Specifies that GerbTool creates a aperture for drawig lies whe a equivalet aperture does ot exist. If ot checked, GerbTool uses the ext smaller aperture. If a ext smaller aperture does ot exist, it uses the smallest. Map Blocks Displays a dialog box that you use to map blocks i the DXF file to apertures i GerbTool. If Auto Map is selected the all blocks to be mapped must have their ames costructed i the same maer as GerbTool DXF Export costructs block ames. If Clear Map is selected, the all block mappig associatios are removed. OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide 35

Export Commad referece Usig the Export commad you ca export your Gerber data ito BARCO DPF, IPC-D-350, IPC-D-356, DXF, HPGL ad PostScript data formats. BARCO DPF GerbTool exports desigs i the BARCO DPF format to a separate file for each layer. You select which layers to export ad what the output fileames will be. If you eable the Auto Reame butto GerbTool outputs all selected layers, reamig each layer automatically usig the fileame extesio specified i the New Extesio field. IPC-D-350 GerbTool exports desigs i the IPC-D-350 format to oe disk file, cotaiig all layer data specified withi the curretly loaded desig. The specified output file cotais all data ecessary to reproduce your desig o ay IPC-D-350 compatible device. IPC-D-356 GerbTool exports desigs i the IPC-D-356 format to oe disk file cotaiig all layer data specified withi the curretly loaded desig. The specified output file cotais all etlist data associated with the curret desig. DXF Whe exportig to DXF format, GerbTool creates a correspodig DXF layer for each layer i the GerbTool desig. I additio it creates a DXF layer 0, cotaiig items which appear withi the Blocks sectio. The Blocks sectio cotais blocks with iformatio ecessary for displayig each of the apertures used i the desig. You are ot required to acquire a equivalet set of blocks for reproducig the apertures that ca appear withi GerbTool. O Note DXF does ot support the cocept of polarity. Negative polarity areas withi custom apertures will ot appear correctly whe the file is imported ito other applicatios. Block ames are created with a covetio that allows for easy import back ito GerbTool whe the DXF Import Auto Map feature is used. Each pad i the desig is output ito the DXF file as a block isert. By processig the pads as refereces i this maer, istead of duplicatig the draws for each istace, ca sigificatly reduce the size of the geerated file. 36 OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide

Commad referece Whe exportig to the DXF format, you see the followig dialog box. Export DXF dialog box. Output File Report File Specifies ame of the DXF file to create whe exportig. Specifies the report file to geerate. HPGL GerbTool provides three modes of output whe plottig o a HPGL compatible plotter: Sketch, Outlie ad Fill. Sketch mode is the fastest but does ot show width o draws ad some flashes such as Douts. Outlie mode shows true width o all objects but they are outlied oly. Fill mode shows true width, ad all objects are completely filled i as they would appear o a photoplot. Fill mode is the slowest ad is extremely hard o plotter pes. Export HPGL dialog box. You ca also specify output file, media size, plot offset, pe width, pe speed, pe umber for flashes ad draws, pe umber for the optioal border, scale, whether to rotate 90 ad whether to plot oly pads (flashes). The offset values are applied idepedet of the scale specified. Plot offsets allow you to plot multiple images o oe sheet. Add Border This optio adds a border to your plots. To cotrol what text GerbTool adds to this border see Optios/Cofigure later i this chapter for a descriptio of the Prit Border Text cofiguratio parameter. OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide 37

Commad referece Batch Mode This optio istructs GerbTool to output each visible layer to a separate output file. Durig batch mode operatio, if the Output File field is empty, the output fileames are derived from the fileame associated with each layer ad the curretly cofigured HPGL fileame extesio (see Optios/Cofigure later i this chapter). If, o the other had, the output file field cotais a fileame, GerbTool appeds a umber represetig the umber of the iput layer (i.e., demo.001, demo.002, ad so o). Iteractive Mode Eablig Iteractive mode allows you to iteractively positio each layer o the output page. To positio a image o the page, simply click your mouse over a image to select it ad the drag the image to the desired locatio ad release the mouse butto (or click agai). Durig iteractive plot positioig, a meu of buttos is provided alog with several plot specific ested commads. HPGL iteractive cotrol form. The Plot butto saves the page layout ad plots the data. The OK butto saves the page layout ad quits the iteractive sessio without plottig. The Reset butto resets the images to their iitial positios for this sessio (if the form has bee pied) or simply quits the iteractive sessio without savig the page layout or plottig the data. The ested commads available durig a iteractive plot sessio are C for absolute coordiate etry, I for page layout iitializatio, L to cycle the curretly selected layer forward, CTRL+L to cycle the curretly selected layer backward, S to sap (alig) the curretly selected layer o top of aother layer, ad R to redraw the page layout. O Note There are two files withi the GerbTool program directory that affect each HPGL plot. The files HPGL.INI ad HPGL.DEI are prefixed ad appeded, respectively, to the actual plot output. If you have ay special requiremets, you may edit these files as eeded. 38 OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide

Commad referece PostScript GerbTool provides PostScript output allowig you to plot your data o ay device that supports PostScript, icludig typesetters capable of producig productio quality artwork. There are two modes of output whe outputtig PostScript: Outlie ad Fill. Outlie mode shows true width o all objects but they are outlied oly. This allows you to check for overlappig features. Fill mode shows true width, ad all objects are completely filled i as they would appear o a photoplot. Fill mode may produce a larger output file. Export PostScript dialog box. You ca also specify output file, media size, plot offset, scale icludig fit to page, whether to rotate 90 ad whether to plot oly pads (flashes). The offset values are applied idepedet of the scale specified. Plot offsets allow you to positio the image aywhere o the media. Gray Scale Eablig Gray Scale mode allows you to output accurate black ad white composites, as well as halftoe images. Whe Gray Scale mode is disabled, all colors other tha the backgroud color are prited as black. Whe eabled, all colors (other tha black/white) are coverted to a differet gray scale. Add Border This optio adds a border to your plots. To cotrol what text GerbTool adds to this border, see the Cofigure sectio uder the Optios meu later i this chapter for a descriptio of the Prit Border Text cofiguratio parameter. Batch Mode This optio istructs GerbTool to output each visible layer to a separate output file. 93 Commad referece Border Specifies the miimum spacig allowed betwee ay item ad the border specified i the Border Layer field. Flash Specifies the miimum pad size. Trace Specifies the miimum trace size. Mi Rig Specifies the miimum aular rig required. The Aular Rig optio compares the diameter of the flash o the DRC layer to the diameter of the flash o the drill layer with the assumptio that the drill layer ormally cotais a flash at each pad locatio usig a smaller size tha the DRC layer. The Mi Rig value is the differece i diameters. Select whether the size of each drill layer flash is take from the D-Code size or the Tool size. Through-hole pads that do ot have a correspodig drill flash are reported as missig drills. If either the Mi Rig value or drill layer are 0, GerbTool does ot perform the aular rig. 6 Tip You ca also use the aular rig check to verify a soldermask layer. Use the soldermask layer as the active layer; use the copper layer o which the pads are defied as the drill layer. Drill Layer Specifies the drill layer used i the aular rig check. A 0 disables aular rig checkig. Use Size Of Specifies whether the size of the drill layer flashes are take from the D-Code size or the Tool size field withi the aperture list whe performig aular rig checkig. Well Behaved The DRC commad supports two separate modes: well behaved ad ormal. I well behaved mode, GerbTool assumes that legal pad/trace or trace/trace coectios have commo X-Y locatios (see the Netlist commad i Chapter 7 for a descriptio of well behaved Gerber files). This meas that ay actual cotact betwee items that do t share a commo X-Y locatio, ad are i differet ets, is cosidered a violatio. Coversely, i ormal mode, ay actual cotact betwee items is ot cosidered a violatio. Oly items that are ot i cotact but are withi the miimum spacig rules are cosidered i violatio. Well behaved mode is preferred if your Gerber files were produced accordigly, because it provides much faster processig ad more accurate results. O Note If a valid etlist does ot already exist, GerbTool prompts you to geerate oe. While a etlist is ot a prerequisite to DRC, a etlist icreases the usefuless ad accuracy of DRC. Widow Specifies that GerbTool rus the DRC o a particular widow of data, rather tha o the complete layer. Fid Stubs Allows GerbTool to locate ad highlight all trace stubs. A trace stub is ay trace that touches a pad or trace o oly oe ed. Max Errors Sets a limit to the umber of errors DRC produces. This prevets DRC from geeratig a huge report file if you eter the icorrect spacig rules for a give desig. OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide 85

Commad referece Do t check items i select group Tells DRC to igore all items that are i the curret select group. For example, if you have blocks of text that you wat to exclude from the check, you ca use the Add commad to create a select group with these blocks of text. DRC the igores the text, thereby producig a much cleaer report. After performig the DRC, GerbTool eables DRC error viewig ad displays the DRC View Errors dialog box as show below: DRC view errors dialog box. You ca use this dialog box to examie ad documet ay or all DRC errors foud. Next Jump forward to the ext o-fixed error. Prev Jump back to the ext o-fixed error. GoTo Jump to the curret error, fixed or ot. Prit Prit the curretly selected error o the default Widows priter. You must specify a layer to operate o (From Layer) as well as a output layer (To Layer) for the geerated Soma pads. O Note If you eter a zero i the From Layer field, GerbTool processes all viewed layers, with the resultat Soma pads beig added to their respective layers. You ca restrict the geeratio of Soma pads to a particular D-Code by eterig its idetifier i the D-Code field. A D-Code of zero matches all. Edit the spacig parameters to specify the desig rules to which Soma must adhere. The Host Offset field cotais the offset maitaied betwee the host pad cetroid ad the edge of the geerated Soma pad. This value may be egative. If Soma detects a spacig rule violatio while placig a Soma pad, it reduces the size of the Soma pad to avoid such errors. You ca cotrol the percetage of the host pad size. Use the Mi Percet field ad Max Percet field to cotrol the miimum ad maximum size of the geerated Soma pad, as a percetage of the host pad size. You ca also idicate whether Soma should operate o a widow of data versus a complete layer. O Note If a valid etlist does ot already exist, GerbTool prompts you to geerate oe. 97 Commad referece Delete Existig Teardrops Whe you select this optio, GerbTool removes existig teardrops from the desig (or widow withi the desig) before creatig the ew teardrops. O Note If a valid etlist does ot already exist, you will be prompted to geerate oe ow. A etlist is required for the Teardrop tool to work properly. All pad locatios for which GerbTool could ot geerate a Teardrop are highlighted ad their locatios are specified i the geerated report file. O Note You ca remove teardrops usig the Udo commad. Netlist The Netlist item displays the Geerate ad Save commads. Geerate The Geerate commad processes all viewed layers ad creates a sigle multilayer etlist that becomes part of the iteral database. The etlist may the be used by other GerbTool commads that require a etlist such as DRC ad Soma (Tools meu). You ca idicate whether your database is well behaved or ot. A well-behaved Gerber file is defied as a file where all items that are to be cosidered coected share a commo X-Y locatio as show below: Trace eds share the same X-Y locatio. Pad ad trace ed share the same X-Y locatio. Example of a well behaved Gerber file. OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide 89

Commad referece The followig illustratio shows a example of a Gerber file that is NOT well behaved: Trace eds do t share commo X-Y locatios. Trace eds do t match pad X-Y locatios. Example of a Gerber file that is ot well behaved. If you determie that your Gerber files are ideed well-behaved, choose this mode whe geeratig a etlist, because there is a dramatic icrease i processig speed due to the well-behaved ature of the Gerber files. Sice so may of GerbTool s features require a etlist to perform properly, you ca save the geerated etlist withi your Gerber files for later use. If etlist savig is eabled, ad a etlist is preset, GerbTool saves it whe the layer is saved. To remove a etlist from a Gerber file, load the layer (or layers), disable etlist savig usig the Format commad (Files meu) ad the save the ecessary layers. O Note GerbTool uses the G04 commad to embed a etlist withi a Gerber file. This causes the Gerber file to icrease slightly i size. Remove etlists as described above before submittig your files to be photoplotted, due to their icreased size ad the possibility of the photoplot equipmet ot properly recogizig the G04 commad. 90 OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide

Optimizatio is cotrolled by the Swath Width value ad by whether a X or Y sort is performed. The report file cotais a approximate distace that the drill head will travel. Therefore, by adjustig the swath width ad examiig the report file you ca achieve the fastest drillig throughput. O Note Perform image paelizatio prior to executig this commad. If you perform virtual paelizatio the output of this commad cotais step ad repeat codes. Use these codes if your drillig equipmet has limited memory capacity. Otherwise, a fully optimized o-virtual pael results i more efficiet drillig. Occasioally there may be items that you do t wat optimized, but that you wat to iclude i the same drill file, such as test coupos ad moutig holes. Place these items o a layer i the exact order that you wat them drilled. GerbTool eters these layers ito the Merge Layer Pre ad Post fields. GerbTool iserts these layers ito the drill file without optimizatio before ad after isertig the optimized iformatio from the layer specified i the Drill Layer field. This is doe o a tool by tool basis. Therefore, GerbTool outputs iformatio for tool #1 o the Pre merge layer first, the optimizes ad outputs the drill layer, followed by the tool #1 iformatio from the post merge layer. GerbTool the repeats the process for tool #2, ad so o. This also works for Virtual paels whe you wat to iclude opaelized drill data. Sort Tools By - Number or Size Idicates how GerbTool orders the tools i the output file. Pre-drill holes larger tha Idicates the maximum size for holes that will ot be pre-drilled. 94 OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide

Aperture macros are also programmable usig replaceable parameters, which allow a macro to produce differet results, depedig o the aperture defiitio specified by the AD aperture defiitio commad (explaied i the precedig sectio). Replaceable parameters are idicated by a dollar sig ($) followed by a umeric value. The umeric value idicates the parameter s positio withi the AD aperture defiitio. A typical dout macro ad correspodig defiitios are show below. %AMDONUT* 1,1,$1,0.0,0.0* 1,0,$2,0.0,0.0* % %ADD10DONUT,0.60X0.40% %ADD20DONUT,0.08X0.70% I the above example, D10 is defied as a 60-mils dout with a 40-mils hole, ad D20 is defied as a 80-mils dout with a 70-mils hole. Note that both D10 ad D20 refer to the same macro but have differet sizes. GerbTool allows you to edit aperture macros usig the Edit AM butto withi the Apertures/Edit dialog box. See Chapter 7: Commad referece for more iformatio. 108 OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide

Chapter 9 Exteded Gerber Layer compositig Viewig composites With exteded Gerber, a sigle Gerber file defies a composite image of arbitrary complexity. Each layer of data withi the Gerber file is prefixed with a appropriate polarity commad. Orderig of the layers is critical as the data is processed sequetially. For assistace, check the example files provided ad otice how each layer either adds or removes from the iitial image. GerbTool automatically creates separate layers for composite layers whe readig a exteded Gerber file ad coversely creates a sigle file for all layers that form a composite whe writig out data. Composite layers ca be displayed with the V shortcut key. This ested commad toggles composite viewig o or off. Whe eabled, GerbTool displays composite layers as they are plotted. Whe disabled, GerbTool displays composite layers as if all layers were dark (positive). You ca also cotrol composite viewig usig the Edit dialog box. Covertig from RS-274-D to exteded Gerber format I order to covert a set of stadard Gerber 274-D files ito a sigle exteded Gerber composite file, load the 274-D files as you ormally do ad the perform the followig steps usig the Edit commad (Layers meu): Set the Layer Name field of each layer to a meaigful ame. 6 Tip Settig the Layer Name field to the origial fileame of the same layer will label the exteded Gerber layers i a fashio that will be familiar to the user. Decide o the fileame you wat to use for the ew exteded Gerber file ad reame all of the Gerber fileames to this ew ame. It is importat that each exteded Gerber layer have the same fileame. Set the Layer Type for each of these layers to Composite. Assig a polarity ad a commo umber to the Key field for each of the exteded Gerber layers. For example, D1 for Dark composite umber 1 or C1 for Clear composite umber 1. A polarity of Dark meas that the layer is to be displayed i the style a ormal Gerber file is displayed. Clear tells GerbTool to display the layer usig the curret backgroud color. This erases, or clears, areas from a image that were previously draw by a dark layer. Set egative layers to clear. O Note The commo umber portio of the Key field allows GerbTool to load multiple exteded Gerber composite files at the same time. Each set of layers withi a exteded Gerber file should have a commo umber assiged to the Key field. OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide 109

Chapter 9 Exteded Gerber Click o the Edit butto withi the File Format group box. Chage the Dialect field to exteded Gerber (274-X). Save the composite file usig the Save commad (File meu). All the layers are writte ito a sigle exteded Gerber file with the ame that you specified, alog with a embedded aperture list. To load this ew exteded Gerber composite file ito aother desig, eter its fileame ito the Fileame field as you would with ay other Gerber file, makig sure the file format has bee set to exteded Gerber (274-X). There is o eed to load i a aperture list, because it is already icluded i the file. 110 OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide

Chapter 10 Usig custom apertures Create a custom aperture Usig GerbTool, you ca create custom apertures. A custom aperture is othig more tha a Gerber file, ad ca therefore be of virtually ay size or shape. This chapter details the steps for creatig a custom aperture. Usig the Format commad (Files meu), set the Gerber format to Ich, absolute, 2.3 ad o zero suppressio. Select the Load commad (Files meu). Eter the appropriate desig fileame. 6 Tip Use oe desig file for all of your custom apertures. I the Layers dialog box, eter a descriptive ame i the Fileame field, such as FIDUCIAL.CUS (the.cus extesio is madatory). Eter the fileame of the aperture list that you will be usig for this custom aperture i the Aperture List field. Choose the OK butto. GerbTool will iform you that the specified Gerber file does t exist. Respod affirmatively to create the ew layer. At this poit you ca create your custom aperture usig ay of the apertures defied i the aperture list assiged to the ew layer. O Note Before you save your custom aperture, esure that the origi is where you wat it. You ca use the Origi commad (Edit meu) to relocate the origi. To use the ew custom aperture, eter its fileame (without a extesio) i the Shape field of a aperture list usig the Edit commad (Apertures meu). M Cautio The aperture list used while desigig your custom aperture must be specified i the Custom Ap List field withi the Defaults dialog box. Use the Defaults commad (Optios meu) to chage this field, if ecessary. A aperture list used for custom apertures should ot itself cotai ay custom apertures. 6 Tip For best results, you should set aside oe aperture list dedicated to all your custom apertures. 121 Chapter 11 Workig with text fots GerbTool uses a fot file cotaiig a list of X-Y coordiate pairs that costitute the strokes required to display each character iserted by the Text commad (Edit meu). You ca have more tha oe fot file but GerbTool will always read the STROKE.FNT file at startup. To use a differet fot file, reame STROKE.FNT to some other ame, the reame your fot file to STROKE.FNT. GerbTool allows you to edit existig fots ad create ew fots that are used for text isertio. This chapter details the steps for editig fots. Editig a fot Before you edit a fot you must covert it ito idividual Gerber files for each character. To do this, from the system prompt chage to the GerbTool fots directory ad type the followig commad, the press the ENTER key: f2g../stroke.ft This will create a idividual Gerber file for each character i the fot file. You ca ow start GerbTool ad load oe of the provided desig files UPCASE.GTD, LWCASE.GTD, NUMBERS.GTD, PUNC1.GTD, or PUNC2.GTD, which cover uppercase, lowercase, umbers, ad puctuatio characters respectively. The Film Box is set to a 7-mils square, i which each character must remai. You ca draw ay shape you wat as log as you stay i or o the film box ad you do t try to add flashes. O Note It is importat that the file format of the idividual Gerber files for each character remai at Ich, absolute, 2.3, ad o zero suppressio. Oce you have fiished editig the characters, you ca use the followig commad at the system prompt to create a ew fot file, the press the ENTER key. g2f ewfile.ft I the above example, a ew fot file would be created with a fileame of NEWFILE.FNT. Note that this program does ot purge the idividual Gerber character files. You may do this maually if you wat. Remember that GerbTool will ot recogize your ew fot file uless it is amed STROKE.FNT ad is i the GerbTool PROGRAM folder. OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide 113

Chapter 11 Workig with text fots Creatig a ew fot To create a completely ew fot you ca follow the steps detailed i Editig a fot above, but skip the fot file to Gerber file coversio step. O Note It is usually easier (ad faster) to modify a existig fot tha to create oe from scratch. 114 OrCAD Layout GerbTool User s Guide

Appedix C Soma cocepts Soma creates a maximum material coditio at the poit where a trace segmet eters a pad, thereby elimiatig the possibility of pad/trace separatio (breakout). This is accomplished by examiig a Gerber file (layer) ad outputtig pad flashes at the correct locatios, ad of the correct size, to provide the most material where a trace eters a pad. Automatic adjustmets are made to the size ad locatio of the geerated Soma pads to elimiate desig rule spacig violatios. The followig illustratio shows the origial pad ad trace, as well as the resultat Soma pad. Host Pad Soma Pad Host Offset Trace Soma cocept. The distace maitaied betwee the host pad ceter ad the edge of the geerated Soma pad (see Host Offset i illustratio above) is adjustable.
