1 Advanced Placement 2D DESIGN Application for Admission- Deadline- June 13 th Code- w4cqsgk The AP Art program is designed for a highly motivated art student who wishes to pursue a serious, intensive college level course of study in studio art. Students must be prepared to complete summer assignments, frequent homework assignments, and work at a high productivity level during the school year through independent study with the instructor acting as a guide. The final goal is to create and submit a portfolio to a panel of AP college assessors who will determine whether the student will be awarded college credit. It is a great class to complete a general freshman year elective requirement at the college level regardless of major. Investigation, Growth, and Discovery is the ultimate goal! *Students must complete a minimum of one year in level II in the chosen field of study unless approved by the instructor. A semester of level III is preferred due to the stringent requirements and rigorous pace of the AP program but is not required. Students applying for AP 2D Design must submit: Tasks: The application completely filled out and returned to Sears Check when completed to me- Write the explanation directly in the (not a WORD document) An explanation of why you think you are a worthy candidate for the AP program based on the reading about the portfolio and your reasons for taking this class DO NOT THIS TO ME UNTIL YOU HAVE READ THE REQUIREMENTS ON THE NEXT PAGE! The Portfolio- What is it??? Worksheet completed and a binder ready for next year.

3 AP Essay Guidelines-2018 Overview: All portfolios are broken down into three sections: Quality, Breadth, and Concentration. Throughout the year you will be expected to produce work well above the required amount. Second semester you will begin the selection process of choosing the BEST for submission. Below are some prompts to help guide you in assessing if you are a qualified applicant for this class. Write a paragraph essay explaining why you are ready for AP 2D Design AFTER you have reviewed the documents at Collegeboard- the links are on Google classroom. Start the paragraph with this structure: I believe I am a worthy candidate for AP 2D design because give 3 reasons. Then, explain with specifics about each section of the portfolio. First, I feel like I am ready for the Breadth section because (INCLUDE STUFF FROM BELOW) In addition, my ability to or my interest in..has prepared me for the Concentration section (INCLUDE WORDS FROM BELOW) You should support your answers with information found below and online about the 3 sections!!!!! Include some experiences that are unique to you 1.BREADTH- (12 digital images) This section consists of your best examples that demonstrate an understanding of a wide variety of technical skills you are good at with a camera and in Photoshop and processes- composition skills-design PRINCIPLES AND ART ELEMENTS, techniques, problem solving, investigation of different ideas. Explain why you believe you are prepared to produce work based on this criteria sighting specific experiences and skills. 2.Concentration- (12 digital images) This section consists of your best work that revolves around a central idea. The idea should show an investigation/research and it should develop and change over time, but stay connected with the original idea. This section requires research and thinking skills and planning (journaling, brainstorming, sketchbooks, research). Explain why you believe you are prepared for this part of the course using specific reasons. 3.Quality and the Final Portfolio: In the fourth quarter students will select the top 5 pieces for Quality. These original pieces will be matted and turned in (as opposed to a digital submission). The selection process requires good writing skills, excellent craftsmanship, and great organizational skills and time management in order to prepare the portfolio. Getting comfortable with the AP 2D Design Website: You can access all of the links through Google Classroom READ THE COURSE DESCRIPTION FOR AP 2D DESIGN - Read Page 7 - Read Create an AP binder for class What are the three sections of the 2D DESIGN portfolio? How many works for each section? AP Portfolio- What is it????? How will the works be sent in and judged? Total Images: Breadth: Page 16 What are you trying to demonstrate for the judges? What are the 6 important Breadth concepts we are going to be studying next year?

5 Concentration: Page 14 Summarize what the judges will be assessing in this category? Generate some possible ideas to investigate that interests you: List some of the really important criteria that define a score of a 5/6 after reading the scoring guidelines online: What is the name of this course?

6 Assignments: Summer AP 2D Design Things to do List: Check when done Suggested Photos: Homework: They SHOULD BE IN LABELED DIGITAL FOLDERS ON A FLASH DRIVE- see next page- 1. Shots in studio- simple objects, portraits 2. Aperture, Shutter, Light, ISO studies in sep. folders 3. Design Principle shots in separate DIGITAL folder- REPETITION, EMPHASIS SYMMETRY, ASSYMETRY, RADIAL, DEPTH, PERSPECTIVE, SCALE Etc. 1 documentary photo/series, 1 emotional and 1 informative due first week RESEARCH: TASK 1: Investigate ONE IDEA (see example in packet) Mostly images Gather ONE page of information about a possible idea for a concentration of 12 pieces something you would like to investigate or learn more about. It could be ANYTHING like all about paper clips but then you would have to research the history, purpose, invention, how their made, what their made of, unusual uses of, etc. Like the 100 uses of duct tape. Or a social issues, a career, a hobby, music etc. Include photos of this idea or object from Google Images. GOOGLE: PAPER CLIP PHOTOGRAPHY Task 2: Investigate 1 MASTER ARTIST or CONCEPT 1. Research a photographer or a concept. 2. Paper should be mostly images- you can insert them into Word or use Photoshop 3. Write/Type a small blurb about the artist and HOW you plan to be inspired by their work. GATHERING OF IDEAS- The Journal: 1. Photos glued ON TO WHITE PAPER from magazines or print THEM from the internet, etc that you love.(big images can be folded in half)- 5 pages 2. A Short response and brainstorm, and a PLAN of how you could be inspired to create something based on the image.

7 Concepts Assignment: Complete STUDIO/OBJECTS LIGHTING EXTRACTIONS Set up studio in house or room with studio lights- hardware store etc.- experiment with a variety of light set ups to manipulate shape, form, shadows and improve your ability to create contrast. Use one light, 2 lights, light from above or below, colored lights, flashlights.. photograph through materials, shine light through grates, blinds. Simple Objects AND People on white/solid background- in house or outside with white poster board/ textured etc.- Add a light source (lamp)- potential use for graphic work Objects and people on solid backgrounds for composites and EXTRACTIONS!!! USE WEIRD PROPS- like transparent fabric, screen, foil- wrap people in it, place people IN THE FIELD LIGHT ANGLE- CHANGE IT UP! PORTRAITS DESIGN PRINCIPLES on it, GET CRAZY- use weird light -Photograph at night, in the rain, reflections, shadows, fog, through fences etc. things -Documentary photography- frame within a frame, leading lines, hots spots, structure, depth -Bird s eye, worm s eye, it is really important to find strange angles and point of view- lay down, climb on things, stand over things, lay under things, shoot through things - SEEK LIGHT- golden hours, night scenes, slow shutter Portraits of one person in a study of at LEAST 20 photos that show their character (props, poses)- formal or candid.- EYE CONTACT and LIGHTING and STRUCTURE IN THE BACKGROUND!!!!! -Environmental Portraits..USE Accessories, Props, Objects, Wide angle, telephoto, body parts, a partial Capturing a moment or an emotion.candid Complete experimental studies with Aperture- LONG DEPTH and SHORT DEPTH, Shutter speed- SLOW AND FAST, White balance, ISO film speeds, LOW KEY, HIGH KEY ****Focus on one design principle each time! Google for ideas!!!!! EMPHASIS (isolation, standing out in a crowd one thing different, leading lines) FIGURE/GROUND (BACKGROUND) RELATIONSHIP (hots spots and depth) PROPORTION- Use space and angle and point of view to manipulate size REPETITION- HUNT FOR IT! BALANCE- ALL THREE TYPES RHYTHM- movement-hose, ribbons, slow shutter Get out of the house and search for the, bizarre, social commentaries, beauty, the impossible, funny, sad etc.remember lighting is EVERYTHING- find the sweet light SHOULD REALLY AFFECT THE VIEWER- INTENSE RESPONSE!!!!

8 IDEAS TO EXPLORE Shoot into mirrors or place a mirror in a hot spot and look into it(better yet, a broken mirror) Spoons and only one fork Still life of electronics/rusty things/stuff that evokes memories of the past take clothes/shoes/bags/ jewelry out of your closet and photograph Old cars / crap in a garage/attic/barn/shed The lone figure or the lone object wide angle symmetry or hot spot worm s eye and bird s eye Climb to the top of a building and shoot down.or stand over something and shoot down shoot cracks in the street/trash/gutters/ Photograph CHIPS you interpret that Arrange a bunch of objects that are the same but include one different thing DISTORTION: Shoot through glass, mesh,screen, fabric, holes in fabric distortion! Magnifying glass, water and dye Photoshoot architecture parts of a building make a paper tunnel and photograph through it Holes in nature find someone old to photograph a baby body part LOVE ANGER SADNESS JOY SICKNESS Rotting fruit Food shots from a bird s eye view using window light (just google food photography or go on any blog) Shoes at ground level that tell a story of your past, present and future photograph something in water or on fire! (except Jake) Old car at a really strange angle Wrap someone up in foil, plastic wrap (not the face), fabric, rip a hole in one part, expose a body part (ear or eye, nothing inappropriate) Empty out a bag and arrange the contents on a solid background shoot from straight down from above go to a metro/city Scan something weird smear something on someone or something have someone hold something in front of their face and take a symmetrical portrait photograph using your phone as the only light source Smells.. shoot light through venetian blinds walk through a creepy forest with someone frolick in a field toys in the grass worm s eye Fish??? Paper clips, eggs, tacks, pencils someone under a bed, in an elevator, better yet.in costume, Animal parts body parts hands doing something, a person looking FREE candid shots of emotion Dead animals/ bones/skulls empty a drawer in your room and photograph the contents..do the same thing in the living room Portrait in nasty weather A person that is dirty A landscape through a small opening photograph weird stuff If you register over the summer, you MUST me at jfsears@aacps.org for more information and tasks.
