I hope 2019 brings you all that you are wishing for. For FCC the New Year will bring forth some great presentations at our upcoming meetings as well as a couple of fun field trips where members can join together to learn, share and enjoy each other s company. An upcoming executive board meeting may yield some surprises to better serve the membership of our club. Stay tuned for results of the meeting in the end of January. At my age you would think I shouldn't make new year resolutions that I won t keep. So I won't make any. 2 Every so often we have a Spotlight column highlighting one of our members. This month we had the opportunity to interview Louise DeStefano. It was about 10 years ago I was looking on line for a camera club and came across FCC the Friendly Club. When I visited I found a place that was not intimidating and a group of friendly people. I later saw this was a club where I could learn and I did indeed improve my photography. I have a couple of Canon cameras. One is a 50D. I love photographing flowers and post one flower a day on social media. I also enjoy macro photography and finding and catching a moment in an image. These exercises keep me from being pigeon holed into shooting only what I feel judges want in competition. Program nights are a highlight for me as this is an opportunity to learn and develop as a photographer. One of my favorite images is that of an Egret taken in the Florida Everglades. I titled it Being Shy. It reminds me of a special day photographing in that beautiful setting and it also did well in competition. Over the years I have served on the dinner committee and currently as recording secretary for FCC.. My only regret is that we are snow birds and miss being at club during the winter months. Greetings from Florida: A belated Merry Christmas to the FCC family and a happy and healthy 2019 ahead. We are so glad to still receive the FCC s. Best regards from Florida, Marty and Selma Mirsky Page 2 Congratulations to our member Terry Chen who won two PSA Honorable Mention awards in an international competition held by the Photographic Society of New York USA. One for Large pictorial print and the other for Open Monochrome digital. Great job Terry FCC is proud you are a member of our club. You can see his and other winners in their 2018 catalog at: dia/galleryimages/2018/2018-psnysalon-e.pdf Sad news: Dorothy Gist sent the following on 12/20: I just received the sad word from Joe Mancher s family that he passed away today. 2-3 weeks ago his health started to decline and he was in hospital for about 10 days You ll remember that he was a FCC member for years and he and Miriam were snow-birds. About 15 years ago they permanently moved to Pembroke Pines, Florida: Miriam passed some years ago and Joe was involved with a camera club in his area. Joe and I have kept in touch over the years. This morning I mailed Joe his birthday card for December 28 he s 95+ We must celebrate Joe s long life and his many years and contributions to the FCC. Not the least of which was a traveling slide show that Joe presented at various nursing homes to entertain the residents. Messages can be sent to his son & daughter-in-law: Kenneth and Julie Mancher 243 Charles Court Orange, Connecticut May you rest in peace Joe, you are fondly remembered. Condolences also to Richard DeDalto and family on the passing of his mother Mary who would have been 91 shortly. Services were held in Monroe NY. Our thoughts and prayers go out for this family as well. Mary DeDalto
3 Page 3 Our Annual Christmas/Holiday Party was a fun event as usual. Members enjoyed the many different foods and libation donated by those present. Everything from Asian pot stickers to wine and great Italian cheeses and delicious cakes etc. The group seemed to gather around the buffet and began telling stories and having fun conversations. Glitches while attempting a group photo caused uproarious laughter. We then settled down to view the images sent in by members of any holiday that had special meaning to them. The stories behind the projected images were from humorous to heart warming and sentimental. Many stayed later than usual to continue enjoying the evening. Unfortunately some members had other obligations that night and we hope they can join us next time. We wish everyone the best of the season and hope to see all at our first meeting and competition night next year, Jan 2nd Funny things that happened to photographers - found on the web: Baby photographer-. had a 9 month old do a little projectile vomiting on my face and camera. Wasn't too funny at the time. I don't even remember her name, but she must be about 39 so I can laugh at it now. While taking pics of surfers and i fell off the beach wall. ripped my jeans and was sore for days... got the shot though and the camera was ok I was taking pictures of an outdoor wedding at someone's house, and I had a dog humping my leg while I was trying to get THE shot... No amount of kicking could get the stupid dog off. In preparation for a television segment I was shooting, I told a woman principal not to wear green and to make sure that she wore something with a pocket for the small transmitter attached to the tiny wireless microphone with a small cable. Of course she wore green with no pocket, so she stuck the transmitter into the elastic grip of the skirt. During my shooting the transmitter slipped and ended up dangling under her skirt between her legs. As a live shoot, I could not stop filming and to make matters worse she started reaching into her skirt to try and get the transmitter out while on camera. skieur

8 Page 8 Leading Line Logic Lines are an integral part of many compositions. They way in which they flow should allow the viewer to enter the picture where the line begins and course his or her eye through the image. Where the line begins and ends, its direction of flow, its angle and shape, and its overall presence all need to be taken into account when deciding upon its placement in the composition. The main purpose of a leading line is to steer the viewer s eye to the main subject. Lines can also be used to imply movement or depth. The classic shot of converging railroad tracks is a great example. Additionally, lines can be a composition all by themselves. Learning to use lines in a creative way will make you a more dynamic photographer. Psychologically, lines have meanings beyond the obvious. Vertical lines imply power, dominance, and command strength. A soldier in an upright stance of attention is a good example. Horizontal lines convey a sense of tranquility and rest. When you sleep, it s in a horizontal position. Lines that curve imply beauty. An hourglass figure on a shapely lady brings this to light. Lastly, diagonal lines suggest action. Try to think of a few examples that may bring motion to mind. In the photo that accompanies this week s Tip, the tracks that start in the lower left corner lead the viewer into the photograph and then bring him or her to the dominant subjects, the two male brothers. The trees on the left side of the photo mimic the path of the road and create a secondary line that parallels the tracks. So the next time you create a composition with any type of leading lines, be aware of their placement and how they impact the rest of the photograph. To learn more about this subject, join me on one of my photo tours or safaris. Please visit to get more information. Foreground Interest Rules of good composition date back to the masters of the Renaissance. They ve become rules because they work. They can successfully be broken, but it s paramount to first become proficient with their use if you want to become a better photographer. Once mastered, it s easier to realize you need not apply them to every photographic composition you create. One of the most important rules of composition is to arrange all the elements in the image in a orderly way. This includes having a foreground, middle ground, and background that work in harmony. The viewer s eye should be lead through each of these areas without encountering any distractions or disturbances. Each area should complement the other in a smooth and orderly flow. In the two images that accompany this week s Tip, each has the three necessary layers or fore, mid, and background. The zebra photo finds the flowers and animal dominating the foreground, the layer of trees and low hillside utilizing the mid, and the mountain and sky in the background. In the shot of the wildebeest migration, the primary wildebeest making eye contact brings the viewer s eye to the bottom part of the photo, the trees dominate the middle, and the far reaching numbers of animals in the distance take up the rest of the image.. Wide angle lenses work great to create the classic foreground to background type of landscape shot, but telephotos also work well as demonstrated in the accompanying examples. Regardless of the lens you use, make the composition clean, have no distractions, and make it evident to the viewer that there s a strong foreground, mid and background FACEBOOK: Happy and Healthy New Year Everyone
