Tony Coppeta From the Editor: Well another year flew by. Time to take stock and make resolutions. What can we do better in the coming year? Photographically speaking for me this means to get out more and shoot more images. Hopefully doing so with an eye to improving the quality of my images. Tips found in our newsletters are always geared in that direction. Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah to all. May you experience the peace of the holiday season throughout the new year. MEMBER S SPOTLIGHT This month Mary O Conner I joined the FCC in September At that time, I was a member of the Equitable Life Camera Club and continued my membership until that club folded. I came to a FCC meeting in response to an invitation from Matt Rosensweig, Secretary, who located me through the PSA Membership Directory. I brought two photographer friends with me. We joined that night because we found the members to be welcoming, friendly and helpful, an attitude that has continued over the years. At our meetings, I continue to enjoy watching the various 15 minute and longer programs and the competitions. There always is something to learn. Over the years, I have been a member of various committees, have held the following elected offices and am a member of the Executive Committee: Treasurer for the years ending President for the years ending Treasurer for five addition years between 1998 and 2007 (I don't have the exact dates.) President for the years ending I always have been interested in both photography and travel. I mostly enjoy photographing scenics and some people pictures and flowers. For 18 years, I traveled with the "Thru the Lens," a photography tour company, to New England and to the parks in the U.S. and Canadian west. I also traveled with them to Europe, visiting one country at a time. One memorable trip was three weeks in the Swiss Alps where we went hiking each day carrying all of our camera equipment and lunch. The longest hike was 12 miles, most were less. After that company went out of business when the founder retired, a friend and I tried other tour companies but found that photography was too limited on some and too much on others to both enjoy and photograph places visited. We also tried some trips on our own with better results. On recent trips, we opted for easier travel on riverboats in Europe, which cruise to a different town each day, where we can leave the boat to see the town and take pictures. The change from film to digital coincided with my inability to carry anything like the two Pentax camera bodies and three or four lenses I used for slides. I opted for a Konica Minolta DiMage A200 digital point and shoot camera with a 28 to 200mm zoom lens. It has produced good results but is showing its age and probably will have to be replaced in the near future. My next project will be to convert some of my more than 25,000 slides to digital images and do a more rigorous job of editing and discarding both slides and digital images. 15 Minute Program This month Helen Repstad gave us an in depth look at Aspect Ratio She conveyed the various formats, how to establish them, and reasons to chose specific ratios. The audience found her presentation enlightening. Our featured presenter in November was Joanna Gazzola. She is a premier creative photographer in PFLI and was here once again to teach us how she does it. Her collection of new tips and tricks along with her magnificent creative images yielded many ooohs and aaahs.

3 Page 3 ASK TIM GREY QUESTION: When I print off the web, the colors are fine. When I print with Elements (or Picasa) the blacks have a serious green tint. When I print black and white, the blacks are green. Help. Tim's Answer: I can certainly appreciate that it would be frustrating when a very basic print job comes out great (such as when printing a page from a website), but then an "advanced" tool such as Photoshop Elements produces a poor print. But this generally relates to the fact that software such as Photoshop or Photoshop Elements provides a greater degree of control over the printing process. That's generally a good thing, but of course it also means you need to be sure the settings are established correctly. Generally, the issue you'll run into here is that the software (such as Photoshop or Photoshop Elements) that you're trying to use for printing is attempting to control the color of the print. In effect that means that the software applies an automatic adjustment to the image to compensate for the behavior of the printer. But if you don't configure the settings correctly, the wrong compensation is applied. My general preference is to have the software I'm using for printing employ an appropriate ICC profile for the specific printer, ink, and paper combination I'm using to print with. I'll then disable color management in the printer driver, to ensure that the color management adjustment is only being applied once. So, the first thing is to make sure you actually have a printer profile for the type of paper you're using with your printer. Then be sure that profile is selected as the output profile when printing. Finally, make sure there aren't any color management adjustments being applied in the Printer Settings dialog for your printer. For example, you might see an option such as "No Color Adjustment" for the printer. You could, of course, also choose to have the printer handle the color, disabling color management in the software you're using to print, and configuring the color management settings in the printer driver. But with a good ICC profile and the appropriate settings, you should get the best results possible n most cases. After The Sun Goes Down Russ Burden Although no longer in its infancy, the world of digital photography continues to amaze me. So many new doors have opened and many more await the creative photographer. One of the doors through which I ve found a portal and continue to open wider with each shoot finds me remaining in the field for longer periods once the sun goes down. Once the sun goes down, those who are patient stand the chance of being justly rewarded with magically lit subjects many photographers overlook. Does the mass exodus just after the sun sets stem from the days of shooting film? I m not sure what the answer is, but give post sunset a chance to see if you become a convert. The Essentials: Long exposures demand the use of a tripod. The sturdier the better should the wind decide to kick up. If the wind is constant, during the course of the exposure, a flimsy tripod will reveal its short comings in the form of a soft image. Exposures may be as long as thirty seconds so be sure to set your camera to Long Exposure Noise Reduction. During a long exposure the digital sensor builds up heat which translates to digital noise. With the camera set to LENR, the file undergoes in camera processing negating the effect of the digital noise. The drawback is it takes time for the file to process - a 30 second exposure requires 30 seconds of processing. The Glow or the Silhouette? Regardless of the ambient light s intensity, my trademark slogan is, It s All About The LIght. For post sunset shooting, it s no different. Ideally, the best light is from a gorgeous alpenglow. Two primary options await the eager photographer - go behind the subject with the bright sky as a backdrop to create a silhouette or use the bounce light of the alpenglow to bathe the subject in the reflected warm tones from the sky.
