May I suggest to FCC members that we resolve to try something new. Perhaps photographing outside your comfort zone. If you like portraits do a landscape. If tabletop is your strength try PJ. How about delving into a new software program? Abstracts? A different focal length? So many possibilities. What about club participation? Consider helping out giving a class, handling snacks, or just greeting new members. Whatever you decide I am sure it will benefit both you and your fellow members. Happy New year. 2 January 2014 page 2 This month we spotlight Tom Mrwik I can't seem to recall exactly how long ago I joined FCC. Time flies when you are having fun. I know it was a year after Joe Crupi had joined and told me about his great experience and the friendly people he met there which prompted me to join. That was quite a while ago. I always had an interest in photography but never any formal instruction. I enjoyed the film days and still remember how great a slide looked projected on the big screen. To me FCC is about people and places. In the club I have met many great people - fellow photographers. With the club I have traveled to many interesting places. Off hand I recall (in no special order) photo trips to Vermont, Maine, Florida, Pennsylvania, NYC, Long Island, Virginia, South Carolina, Wyoming, California and Canada. Those locations were made more memorable by the fellow members who shared the trip. People in the club helped me improve my photography by sharing information and photo tips and with the formal lessons we have at meetings. My first digital camera was a Canon 30D - a real workhorse that I must have taken 10,000 images with. Currently I am using the Canon 7D keeping the 30D as a backup. On our last California trip I had some technical difficulty with the 7D and was glad I brought the 30D to save the day or in that case, the week. Some of my favorite images are 1.) of the Teton Mountains and 2.) a steam engine in Pa- both earned me Leonard Victor awards. But what I consider my signature image is one I called "Motor Man". It is a motorcycle driver I captured while we were driving home from a photo weekend at the NECCC in Amherst. Joe was driving and was able to keep his car in the lane next to the motorcycle while I took the shot. The magic took place later while playing with it in Elements. The end product was an abstract with impact that I really enjoyed making. Over the years I have served FCC on the administration and membership committees. With FCC my adventure continues, meeting more new friends and places to explore. Tom Mrwik Don t forget the Selected Subject for the May 2014 competition will be TREES. Remember that your entries that month must comply with the topic. Any make up images that are submitted that month must also comply with that topic. Have fun and good luck. PFLI Programs at the Plainview/Old Bethpage Library 2pm Jan. 26th - Smart Phone Photography with Scott Karzenoff Scott is Vice President of the eastern region of Haivision, a Candian company which provides streaming media solutions. Scott will discuss the popular trends in both hardware and software and the numerous accessories that are driving the popularity of smart phone photography. Feb. 23rd - Schneider Camera Filters with Ira Tiffen Ira Tiffen is Vice-President of the Motion Picture and Television Filter Division of Schneider Optics Inc. Tell your stories more effectively with filters. Camera filters manipulate light to enhance mood, create atmosphere, focus attention, and render the mundane magical. Hope to see many FCC members attend.

6 January 2014 Page 6 Russ Burden Photo Tip: Outdoor Flash Basics Russ Burden Flash - whether it s a pop up on your 35mm SLR, a built in one on your point and shoot, or a larger and more powerful accessory unit that attaches to your hot shoe, it s an amazing tool. Pictures can be made where light doesn t exist. In a dark room, I can create a picture. A flash creates light where none, or just a small amount exists. Think about this for a moment... If a flash creates light were none or little exists, think about that photo you took outdoors of your son wearing his baseball cap and an ugly shadow formed over his eyes and nose. In that shadowed area of the photo only a small amount of light existed relative to the rest of the image. Therefore, use flash to add light to that area of the photo to brighten it up! And so was born the use of flash in outdoor photography Open Up The Shadows: The myth we need to ignore is when it s sunny, there s plenty of light, so why use a flash. In bright sun, the contrast range between the highlights and shadows is so high, shadows go black and little detail is revealed. Think about the boy in the baseball cap. With flash added, the highlights aren t impacted but the dark areas are opened up and reveal detail. So whether you take that shot of a person with a long brim hat, a clump of flowers that have deep shadows, your pet in the sun in the backyard, or any other situation wherein deep shadows hamper a good image, use flash to add light to the dark areas. Limitations: As amazing as flash is, it does have limitations. Let s revisit the baseball cap situation. If you stand along the first base line and your son is standing on second, don t expect the flash to fill in the shadow on his face. The light from a flash can only go so far. If you use a built in flash, think no more than twelve feet away from your subject. If you use a powerful accessory flash, double it and maybe even a bit more depending on the f stop. Get away from being the person who at the opening ceremony of the Olympics in the nose bleed section of the stadium uses flash to photograph the athletes on the field Read the Manual: Check to see if your camera has what s called Balanced Fill Flash or a Forced Flash On mode. These offer a bit more control than standard automatic. If you leave the flash set to automatic, it will only fire when it s dark which defeats the purpose of using it outdoors. Forced Flash On tells the camera you want the flash to fire every time you press the shutter. So if you re within 12 feet of the person with the hat, the additional light from the flash will help open up the shadows. Balanced Fill Flash allows you to adjust the amount of light that s emitted from it. This is powerful as you take control over how much light is added. The more natural the effect, the more successful the image. You don t want the photo to look flashed. You want just enough to fill in the shadows to soften the contrast. Mon. Full moon on Dec 6 ASK TIM GREY :My question is, if copyright metadata information is added to a photograph, is it false information to add the copyright metadata and not submit the photograph(s) to the copyright office? Can copyright information generically be added to photographs not normally submitted for copyright? Tim's Answer: One of the most important things to know about copyright law (at least in the US) is that you own the copyright to your photographs as soon as you capture the image. That means you can refer to the images as being copyrighted as soon as you capture the photo, and you can use the copyright symbol ( ) to identify your images as being copyrighted. Your photographs are copyrighted by you even if you never submit them to the US Copyright Office. Of course, by registering your photos with the Copyright Office you are both creating documentation that the photos are yours, and also increasing the amount you may be awarded if you win a copyright-infringement lawsuit. But the copyright is yours the moment the work (in this case a photograph) is created. So by all means, add your copyright and contact information to metadata as early as possible in your workflow, and feel free to identify your photos as being copyrighted by you whenever you share those photos with others.
