1 c Shuttertalk March 2016 Est Basement Howick Bridge Club, Pakuranga Rd, Pakuranga, Auckland. Meetings are 1 st, 3 rd and 4 th Mondays at 7.45pm March has had to be our busiest month in some time starting with the 60 th Anniversary celebrations. The Red Hat Ladies were a great hit (P7) and the Anniversary Dinner was very enjoyable with speakers, slide shows, dancers, good food and of course, good company (P6). The workshop taken by Judy Stokes at Muriwai the following day was also extremely well received (P8). Pacifika and the Cultural Festival were also on during March. P2 P8 Important What s On Special competitions Although we will mention them as they come up, there will be a list of special internal competitions at the back of every newsletter. This will help you prepare images well in advance if you wish. These competitions have a habit of sneaking up and people either panic at the last minute or don t enter at all. Hopefully this will help to boost the numbers of entries. The Maslen, McCree and Chambers Cups are due first Monday in May. A few congratulations are in order. First, our club won the Bowron Landscape Cup this year. In the Natex Competition several members got acceptances - Liz Robertson, Chris Wong, Bob McCree and Michael Yu each received one and Shona Kebble got three acceptances. Shona also received a gold medal and a silver medal and Bob received an. We have a new committee and our April Ramble is by our new President Les Motion. Thank you Sheryl for all the hard work you put in as President over the last two years and of course for all your interesting Rambles in the newsletter. I would like to ask members to please let me know of anything interesting photography wise, such as photo opportunities, images and stories you would like to share etc. Also, if you have any successes outside the club, don t be shy, we would love to know about them. Lindsay P.S. Don t forget to renew your membership by the end of April Cultural Festival Bob McCree Cultural Festival - Lindsay

5 President s Ramble Firstly let me thank all members for their support and confidence given to me, to be your President as we enter the 61 st year of the Club. I only hope to continue the leadership that was started by the Inaugural President Doug Webster, back in 1956 to the best of my ability. I know the newly elected committee will keep me on my toes. Congratulations must be given to Frank Ciochetto on being awarded a Life Membership. A more willing person for the unsung work he does around the Club is hard to find. By the time you read this issue of Shutter Talk, our 60 th Anniversary of the club will have been celebrated. Great appreciation must be given to Colin Tyler, who has driven this project from Start through to finish. Nothing has been plain sailing, but in the end we enjoyed a great night. Listening to our Guest Speaker, Arno Gasteiger who has been doing assignments for National Geographic Magazine, showed us just what sort of images were possible, if we just waited for that right moment (as well as being in the right place, at the right time. It was great to have Bob McCree and John Clare give us an insight into some of the history of the club and how we got on in those early years. PSNZ President Murry Cave gave us encouragement to go for our and gave us the example on how he got his FPSNZ dedication to a subject and follow it through, use a story book. Coupled with the Anniversary Dinner, was the opportunity to get some great experience with Portrait and Modelling, given by the Red Hat Ladies Saturday morning, at the Botanical Gardens. I fell over trying to climb on a raised garden wall, making a complete spectacle of myself, but I saved the camera!. Good job no one took a photo. Sunday,10 of us headed up to Murawai to attend a workshop ran by Judy Stokes on Impressionism. I look forward to this year 2016 and know that the Committee are working hard to ensure that all members have a great year, socially, competitive and learning new techniques. 7 Nathan Kavumbura I must admit I was a bit of a sceptic when this was announced but I was proved way wrong as it became a lot more fun than I could have imagined. The Red Hat ladies are full of energy and were quite obliging to do anything you asked. I spent most of the time with one particular lady who said to me that she would be quite happy to climb a tree and have her photo taken. In the end we didn't find a tree suitable so that didn't happen. True to their motto "adventure before dementia" these ladies were a blast to photograph and I really enjoyed the morning. - Nathan Torben Nielsen Sheryl Williams Liz Robertson Torben Nielsen It was a great day out with some dynamic ladies with heaps of attitude. I thoroughly enjoyed their company. Doug Mitchell 7
8 Judy Stokes Workshop The Judy Stokes Workshop was just brilliant. Gaining an understanding of Judy s work flow, editing processes and creativity was very insightful and inspiring. Having the opportunity to shoot freely in an abstract manner for the day was fantastic. I took 1200 shots. I have had a quick look at them and had a play with a few of the images. I got so much out of the course and will spend hours playing and learning with the images I took. Thank you so much to the Howick Camera club organisers and to Judy and her husband for putting on such a brilliant workshop. Lisa Lisa Cropp Les Motion Michael Yu Jeff Smith Last Sunday we attended a workshop run by Judy Stokes at her Muriwai home. There were many highlights during the day, which included being being inspired by Judy's artistic approach to photography. After a delicious lunch we departed in two 4WD vehicles for a stimulating "photographic safari" along Muriwai beach, for over 50 kilometres, all the way to the South Kaipara Heads, with many photographic opportunities on the way there and back. It was a great day - Jeff 8
