istar Panoramas for HDS Point Clouds
istar Panoramas for HDS Point Clouds Why use istar Panoramas for HDS Point Clouds Taking the Photographs Fitting the Panorama with ColourCloud Creating the Equirectangular and Cube Images with Immersive Studio Importing the Cube Images into Cyclone
Why use istar Panoramas for HDS Point Clouds The colours of the points in the Point Cloud are determined by the intensity of the received reflected laser This information is useful in its own right but for some applications it is desirable to attribute the natural colours to the points Although many scanners have a photographic capability, using an external camera provides greater control
Taking the Photographs Camera Height The height of the lens centres of the istar must match that of the Scanner Adaptors are provided with the istar and the appropriate adaptor must be used
Taking the Photographs Camera Height Three Adaptors are provided with the istar Adaptors B and C are used with Adaptor A to increase the height for use with HDS6000 and HDS7000 Scanners C10, C5, P20 Adaptor A HDS7000 Adaptors A + C HDS6000 Adaptors A + B
Taking the Photographs Using the istar The istar is switched on by touching the corners of the screen following the sequence shown if the screen is touched centrally The istar logo is shown while the camera boots up The Main Menu is used to select: Image Capture Take the photographs Image Review View images on the istar Compass and Tilt Settings Configure your requirements
Taking the Photographs Image Capture Selecting the Image Capture option at the Main Menu will bring you to the equivalent of the shutter button on a conventional camera Take the photographs using the count down timer so you are not recorded in the images This interval is set from the Settings Menu The Walk Around Mode enables you to record the images in two halves so you are not recorded in the images select the arrow pointing to the corner you are by then follow the on-screen instructions Live View Mode provides a live immersive view of the scene from the istar
Taking the Photographs Settings Use the settings options to control the number of exposures for a panorama, set the time out and power off options and image format General Settings Time and Date Settings Capture Settings Exposure + Countdown Display Settings Power Off + timeout Ethernet Settings Wi-Fi Settings
Taking the Photographs Exposure In even lighting conditions, such as an overcast day, a single exposure may be sufficient to capture the scene, but where lighting conditions are significantly variable the istar s ability to shoot multiple images for HDR should be used The HDR options are Off, 3 or Auto Auto will usually provide the best solution The ISO value can be set manually from 100 through to Opens the Tilt and Orientation screen
Taking the Photographs Exposure The next slide shows three images, the left image shows the exposure set for the centre of the image, the middle one with the exposer set for the inside of the structure and the right one using HDR Tap the centre camera icon to start Tap a corner and stand back for image capture Tap the image of the camera on a green background to start the countdown
Taking the Photographs Exposure
Taking the Photographs White Balance Colour casts can be apparent in the resulting images, especially in bright sunlight or artificial lighting, which can be corrected for by selecting the Exposure option to suit the light source The options are : Manual, where the Shutter Speed is set by the user Outdoors Indoors Front Outdoors Front Indoors
Fitting the Panorama with ColourCloud Place the *.e57 (cleaned Laser Scan) and *.nctri (istar image taken coincident with the scan) files in a folder in the ColourCloud directory on the C: drive of the computer Launch ColourCloud Browse to the directory Click Process
