1 THINGS TO CONSIDER SHAPE OF CANVAS SCALE YOU WISH TO WORK AT When working through this step I find it hard to start doing it in a way that feels natural. In order to feel like it is beneficial I almost always start by drawing out small thumbnail boxes and put what I know for a fact I want to keep the same. Then I start adding different color palettes and tones. I try to figure out what I want the mood of the piece to be and use colors that complement that idea. I will then add different features to each piece to set them apart and when I am done I combine my favorite layout and color scheme into one final piece. I always try to make thumbnails to get a good idea of what you want your piece to look like before you dive right into the finished piece. PRE p r e p PLANING l a n i n g

2 Why is it better than photos? The best thing about drawing from life is you can turn your head or body and actually understand how the volumes you are looking at work in space. If you ever want to draw something out of your head correctly, you will need to have that understanding. You cant do that with a photo at all. When I draw from life I find myself being able to draw with more fluidity when drawing from life as pose to a photo. This is a skill I want to be able to incorporate into my work. General Shape: lightly sketch them to find size and shape of the pose Finding Plains: sketch receding/ forward areas to reflect your Refining: go around the shape to make the blocky form into a Anatomy studies are crucial for fast growth. Taking time to sit down and just practice skills over and over is not the most glamorous thing but it is very affective to solidify skills over time. practice makes perfect What I found the most helpful was to separate the body into simple shapes. This allowed me to make sure the sizes where correct in relation to each other. Another thing I tried was to separate the body into plains. This helped realize where the light will be hitting each plain to create realistic shadows and high lights. SCULPTING THE FORM CAN BE USED AS A GREAT REFERENCE FOR YOURSELF AND ALSO A WAY TO FIGURE OUT THE DIFFERENT PLAINS OF THE BODY. THIS EXERCISE REALLY HELPED ME VISUALIZE FORM WITHIN SPACE. 4 INSPERATION inspiration In her portraits, Smallwood explores the distortion of the face through movement and expression by abstracting the form through messy brush strokes and sometimes even layering multiple images/ sketches over the top. This is a skill that I admire greatly. I want to be able to push myself to loosen up and paint in a more gestural way that looks natural. ELLY SMALL WOOD I take inspiration from contemporary art and an illustrative style of painting. JEFF HUNT ING TON Jeff is not the most verbose individual but he does not have to be because his art does all the expression for him. Jeff s work is wide ranging, always in flux and ever evolving. There is no doubt that he loves what he does and also cherishes the fact that his style and technique cannot really be pinned down. That is a passion I find admirable and, hopefully, achievable for someone line myself. Looking through Jeff s paintings, there is a strong feeling of absolute hope and untainted expression that envelopes and uplifts the viewer.

5 The monochromatic color scheme uses variations in lightness and saturation of a single color within the Color Wheel. This color scheme gives the feeling of simplicity, elegance, and cleanliness. All Monochromatic colors go well together, making this scheme easy to manage, and producing a soothing and calming effect. The monochromatic scheme is very easy on the eyes, especially with blue or green hues. The selected color can be integrated with neutral colors such as black, white, or an in-between gray. WHY IS IT SO BENEFICIAL? Monochromatic painting allows the painter to be able to see values better than if the where painting with a range of colors. This allows for realistic tones to be created and for proper shades of light and dark to come out in the painting. monochromatic ONOCHROMATIC Monochromatic painting is one created using only one color or hue.

6 exploring different TECHNIQUES It is important to explore different ways of art in order to find ones the suit your own preferences. Style is determined by the characteristics that describe the artwork, such as the way the artist employs form, color, and composition, to name just a few. Another important factor in determining the style of an artwork is to examine the way the artist handles the medium, taking into account the method or technique that the artist uses. An additional aspect of art styles is the philosophy or driving force behind the artwork. All of these stylistic elements are defined by the choices artists make as they compose their artwork. For this technique I attempted doing gestural lines with no line work to begin. Instead, going in with solid colors to block out forms. Making no effort to try and blend different colors to make it smooth but instead leave it unfinished on purpose to create a sketched look. This technique is great to emphasize something over others. Combining ink and graphite is not something I would normally gravitate towards but I feel like it creates a misty affect over parts of the art while also emphasizing other parts. This can be used to your advantage to get your viewer to be drawn to exactly what you want them to see. Line work is one thing that I want to have more practice in. This way of doing bolder o u t l i n e s a n d fi n e shading is a way to get depth in your drawings while still using only one color.

7 the importance of TEXTURE both gelatin desert and snails have a very slimy texture that translates into a sheen very reflective surface. I experimented with this and found that a way to achieve that texture is to add prominent white highlights. The style i draw things in influences the way I will go about drawing. With the rock on the left I painted it with gouache making sure to add scratches and different color variation. within the stone, Compared to the rock on the right where I do a hatching style of drawing with ink. This also works well for adding scratches and dents in the stone but creating variations is much harder then there is no color. I found the draping fabric was a great exercise to work on texture. The smoothness of silk and gradient shadows combined with harsh shadows is really helpful. Plus, you can do this exercise one hundred times and never get the same results because of the way fabric lays. Texture is an important aspect of any art form that can make or break your projects outcome. When drawing painting or sculpting if you do not know how to differentiate between different textures your piece will suffer. Practicing texture isn't the most exiting artistic exercise but it can be the most influential to display technical skills. For example, Clouds and rocks have different textures than each other. If both of those are painted, draw or scalped in the same way they will not come across as what they actually are. VS.

8 WE we ARE are ALL all DIFFERENT different People are all individuals with different emotions and feelings. understanding those differences and embracing them is a skill that I can and will use to apply to my art. The speech bubbles in the sketch are there to show that every character has its own needs and wants. This emphasizes the point I am trying to get across in a lot of the work that I do. It is clear that without the individual, art wouldn't merely be what it is today. The fact that we are all individuals allows from different opinions and views on different subjects. At one time in my life I was under the impression that the world would be better if everyone had the same opinions. There would be no fighting between people. But without different opinions there would be no reason to create art. The discord between one opinion and another influences the ability to make art that has a larger impact and can often times push the boundaries. In my sketchbook I was exploring the ideas of different people having different emotions, especially what they feel like they need. This idea of being individual is one that can be exploited upon when doing different art projects and different meanings.

9 WHO AM I? I AM MY ART Art can be a healing force for people with mental disorders, including people with Dementia, and art can contribute to psychological wellbeing of people regardless of whether they have a mental disorder or not.when making art people often immerse themselves in it, spending hours at a time playing, writing, painting, dancing, and so forth. Time seems to disappear, to be suspended. Much of the time spent working at art is practice rather than creative discovery, and practice is and will always be essential for building skills. That is itself a source of great satisfaction for many artists. Doing art also connects the person doing it with other artists and with audiences. It is a source of important friendships and bonds with other people who can provide support. Doing art also connects the artist with a field of art, with a history and a language that goes far beyond what any individual artist does. Doing art has meaning not just for the individual doing it, but also for a culture. self expression is healthy Art is a great way for me to express myself in a way that is healthy for me. I often struggle with feelings of panic and sadness, but when I draw I am happy and channeling my energy into something much more productive. Art is a way that I can express my feelings without fear of ridicule and disappointment.

10 hhyperrealism y p e r r e a l i s m Hyperrealism can create an atmosphere of Surrealism because nobody sees the world in such detail. -Salman Rushdie The paintings above are my attempts at realistic painting. I find it difficult to get something like this just right; to do that it takes a lot of practice to get right because of the amount if detail you could put into it. I found that i could keep going and never stop if I allowed myself to. I was surprised at how difficult it was to replicate what I saw on the photo. I do believe this is an art form that truly represents the saying practice makes perfect. Artworks that appear extremely realistic to the extent that they trick the eye is know as Realistic. Since the ancient Greeks, intense realism has been an aspiration of Western art. Popularity decreased in the 20th century but in the late 1960s and 70s the popularity of highly-realistic paintings based on photography rose as well as contemporary art. Art is often perceived as a way of detachment from the reality, a key to unlocking some hidden meaning in the world that surrounds us. This is not completely true for art genres like Hyperrealism. Artists developed ways of including narrative, charm and emotion into painting, giving it personality. Hyperrealists stray beyond the line of art, where their work becomes a mere example of excellent skill and blaring the lines between reality and art.

11 WHY I PERSONALLY LOVE GOUACHE Gouache is my favorite medium to use when doing sketches or laying down some basic shapes. This paint helps me do quick color studies and jot ideas down quickly while also being able to make crisp lines of a finished piece of art. The adaptability of the consistency allows me to be able to do quick wakes or heavy cover up work with ease. Gouache is a paint that serves as a mix between watercolor and acrylic paint. when used strait from the tube it is more acrylic and when mixed with water it behaves with all the properties of watercolor. It is very very opaque strait out of the tube and dries mate. This makes it ideal for use in classic illustration paintings. at the two techniques can be mixed together to create stunning artwork. ggouache o u a c h e

12 ILLUSTRATION illustration Illustration is unlike other forms of art. Illustration is used more for telling stories than creating a piece of art to hang on a wall. With illustration you can alter its of little things in the piece to change the tone. Some examples include color, placement,adding text, line thickness and many more. Illustration is more about design than it is about the art itself. Everything has to be places in a particular Experimenting with different small thumbnail illustrations is one of my favorite exercises. spot to give of the best possible message to your viewer. When working in illustration I always find myself planing out what to do with a piece than actually spending time making the art itself.
