1 Name: Hour: Foundational Art Art History Vocabulary: Culture: a group of individuals with common bonds (e.g., family, friends, church group, country) Aesthetic: the compositional, thematic, and philosophical contents of an art work Social: the beliefs, attitudes, and assumptions of a culture Political: the laws, regulations and governmental policies of a culture Art Movement: The tendency or style in art with a specific common philosophy or goal. Followed by a group of artists during a period of time (few months, years or decades). Part 1: TimeLine You will create a timeline that covers the following Art Movements: Renaissance Baroque Impressionism/Post Impressionism Cubism Surrealism Modernism Contemporary 1. Your timeline must be spaced out every 100 years. a. Make sure there is enough space between each century so you have enough room to label the movement dates, movement definitions, artwork images and Chicago style short noted citations. b. Example: 2. Example timeline a. Information that needs to be placed ABOVE Time Line i. Art movement (needs to be neatly color coded) ii. Years movement takes place iii. Art Movement definition iv. Needs to be NEATLY written or Typed out, printed and glued on. 1. All handwritten information must be written with fine tip black or blue ink.

4 Part 2: Writing Assignment You will create 7 Google Documents for each of the following Art Movements: (Name each document with the name of the movement.) Renaissance Baroque Impressionism/Post Impressionism Cubism Surrealism Modernism Contemporary For each movement document you will write: Paragraph 1: REQUIRED INFORMATION ON THE MOVEMENT What are the key characteristics of the artistic movement that you were assigned? What time period was the movement? Was there a particular place where the movement began or thrived? What was the movement influenced by? Paragraph 2: REQUIRED ARTIST INFORMATION What is the full name of your artist? What the the birth and death dates and locations if known? Where did the artist work primarily? (Location) What medium did the artist primarily work with? What was going on in history at the time the did or might have influenced your artist? Choose your favorite work of art from this artist (name sure title, medium and date created are included when you ID it) why do you like it so much? How does the art you choose exemplify the movement they are associated with? What characteristics from the movement do you see in it. Two interesting facts about your artist

5 CITATIONS Make sure EVERYTHING in your paragraph is cited correctly. Each Movement should have in text citations as well as its OWN bibliography page. Lack of citations will result in an AUTOMATIC ZERO for plagiarism. NO EXCEPTIONS Documentation will take two forms in your final paper: In the Works Cited section, where all the sources you've used should be listed alphabetically Within the text of your paper, where parentheses should show your readers where you found each piece of information that you have used. These textual citations allow the reader to refer to your Works Cited page(s) for further information. In-text Citation When you use direct information from one of your sources you must site who actually came up with the idea and the language in which it was written. In MLA format this is down by putting the authors last name is parentheses after the last work of the sentence but before the punctuation. EXAMPLE The sculpture entitled Family, given to the college in 1991 and permanently exhibited in the college's Woodland Street lobby, was carved from an enormous cherry tree that grew in the sculptor's back yard (Rosen). Work Cited Page ~ NEED ONE FOR EACH MOVEMENT The work cited page is the last page of your research paper. It contains the names and authors of all the research you used and cited in your paper. We will be using the internet to do most of our research so you citations will be for books, or electronic source (web page). Layout should be as follows... Book Author last name, first name. Electronic Source Name of the author (last, first) if known. The title of the site. The date of publication or last update. The name of any sponoring prganizations. The date of access.
