1 Lesson Title: Starry Skylines // Jill Kostishion Grade/Class: 3 rd grade Time Allotment: 50 minutes (1-2 days) Enduring Idea: Communication I want my students to understand that works of art can be used to communicate different feelings and ideas, and they can best reveal their understanding by creating and Vincent van Gogh inspired paintings. Overview: Lesson Summary: After watching a BrainPop Jr. video outlining the life of Vincent van Gogh, students consider what it means to communicate thoughts and feelings through painting. Students are provided with van Gogh s Starry Night and asked to imitate his style of painting by creating thought-provoking swirls on a background paper. While students are working, they are introduced to contemporary artist, Stefan Duncan, who is considered the American van Gogh. Students notice the similarities between van Gogh s Starry Night and Duncan s Three Wishes further inspiring their swirling background. On top of this background paper, using black construction paper, students cut out a skyline of their choice to communicate a vibrant and expressive setting. Artists, Artworks, or Artifacts: Vincent van Gogh, Starry Night Stefan Duncan, Three Wishes Key concept(s): Art can be used to communicate emotions and ideas Artists use different painting techniques to portray various feelings Artworks can communicate big ideas through different colors, patterns, and shapes Essential Question(s): 1. How is art used to communicate various emotions and ideas? 2. Why do artists use different painting techniques to evoke different feelings and thoughts? 3. How do different colors, patterns, and shapes allow artworks to communicate big ideas to viewers?
2 Standards: 9.1. Production, Performance and Exhibition of Dance, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts E. Demonstrate the ability to define objects, express emotions, illustrate an action or relate an experience through creation of works in the arts Historical and Cultural Contexts L. Identify, explain and analyze common themes, forms and techniques from works in the arts 9.4. Aesthetic Response D. Recognize that choices made by artists regarding subject matter and themes communicate ideas through works in the arts and humanities Interdisciplinary Connections: Mathematics: colors, patterns, and shapes History: biography of van Gogh, introduction to post-impressionism Objectives: The students will Knowledge: Recognize the various painting techniques Vincent van Gogh used to express thoughts and feelings Skills: Create Starry Night inspired backgrounds using paints with a skyline of choice to evoke certain moods or feelings Dispositions: Utilize classroom materials with care and maintain a clean, friendly environment Collaborate with peers in a respectable manner during discussion Assessment: Evidence of student learning: Students create Starry Night inspired backgrounds, displaying use of color, pattern, and shape
3 Students evoke emotion in artworks through van Gogh inspired backgrounds and skylines of their choice Measurement of student achievement: See attached checklist. Instructional Procedures: Motivation/Engagement: Instruct students to gather around Promethean board supply each student with a carpet square Invite students to watch BrainPop Jr. video exploring Vincent van Gogh Re-cap with students: What were some of the painting techniques used by Vincent van Gogh? Was van Gogh an emotional person? How did his painting techniques help to show emotion in his works of art? Development: Instruct students to return to their seats Provide students with tempera paints of various colors, paintbrushes, and large white pieces of paper Instruct students to think about van Gogh s Starry Night painting provide each table with a copy Instruct students to use van Gogh s painting to inspire their backgrounds encourage students to consider any strong thoughts or feelings that they may have Visit each table group at they work introduce each small group to contemporary artist Stefan Duncan and his Three Wishes painting Ask students to point out the similarities to van Gogh s Starry Night Upon completion of backgrounds, provide students with black construction paper (have other colors available for lights in windows, etc.) and scissors Instruct students to create skylines out of construction paper that match the strong thought or emotion they are feeling Provide students with Elmer s glue to glue construction paper on top of backgrounds Culmination/Close: Invite students to participate in a whole class gallery walk Encourage students to locate the different lines, patterns, and shapes in their classmates paintings Close with a brief whole-class discussion: How is art used to communicate different thoughts or feelings? provide students with
4 notecards to describe how their paintings reflect a strong thought or emotion Preparation: Teacher research and preparation: Vincent van Gogh and post-impressionism (expressionism) research Use of color, pattern, and shape to evoke feelings and thoughts in artwork Instructional resources: Promethean board Vincent van Gogh BrainPop Jr. video: Starry Night example (6) Three Wishes example (6) Student Supplies: Tempera paint (various colors) Paintbrushes (various sizes) Large white paper Black construction paper Colored construction paper for lights in windows Scissors Elmer s glue Notecards Accommodations: Hearing Impairment: Those who are hard of hearing will be placed in the front of the room during the BrainPop Jr. video. The teacher will always be facing them and the lights will remain bright enough so they these students can read lips effectively. Visual Impairment: Those who have visual impairments will be given a printed out copy of Vincent van Gogh s Starry Night and Stefan Duncan s Three Wishes. The images will be extra-large and the font will be extra-large.
5 Changes (post-teaching): Scoring Criteria: Formative assessment: students are evaluated through exit notecards (can they use their artwork to communicate a strong thought or feeling?) Summative assessment: students are evaluated through a checklist (does the student use shape, color, and pattern to evoke emotion?)
