Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 4 Introduction Face painting dates back hundreds, even thousands of years. People had many reasons for practicing the art of face painting, for some societies they used it to decorate themselves for hunting expeditions, scare tactics during war times and also for tribal recognition or status recognition within their tribe. Face painting was also used for various ceremonies such as honoring their gods, entertainment, and commitment ceremonies. In past times, face paint was made by grinding clays, plants, roots and colored stones and mixing them with vegetable oils or animal fats, but today we can walk into almost any retail or specialty craft store to purchase these paints. The method used to create these beautiful and often bright colors makes it easier to wash off with basic soap and water. Over the years, face painting has grown to be used more for entertainment purposes and about 20 years ago became popular as a children s activity for holidays, parties, charity events, carnivals, and various fairs. No matter whether you are learning to face paint as a hobby or for a career face painting is a world of fun and creativity!

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 5 Paints There are many types of face painting supplies on the market and everyone has to start somewhere before they decide what types they like best. Some designs can start out very basic with only one or two colors required but other designs can quickly become more exciting and elaborate and call for a wide pallet of color. One must remember that these paints are going to be applied to the skin. There are a few companies that create paints specifically for the face and skin. If the paints are not made especially for the face and body there is a high risk of allergic reactions. If you risk using paints that are not specifically created for use on skin, and something goes wrong, (and it probably will) even if you have insurance, they won t cover the cost of the damages you could be facing! I cannot stress how important it is to only use face paint specially made for the face and body but the most important thing to look for is whether or not the paints comply with various authorities in your country (e.g. U.S. FDA.) within the guidelines for use on the skin. This might sound a little obvious but it is surprising at times what people do! It is always a good idea to check with a professional and elicit their advice as to what brands they prefer. These paints come in a wide variety and have been tested

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 6 to meet regulatory standards. Face paints can be plain color, contain glitter or pearlescent materials to give that special pizzazz! Some face paints are even ultra violet light reflective so that they glow in the dark! In the beginning it is always best to start off with the basic colors until you get use to working with the paints and designs so that you can graduate on to the more spectacular mixing and matching and elaborate designs achieving that exotic effect you desire! I like to use Snazaroo, a leading face painting company offering a vast range of paints guaranteed to give you the desired effect but below you ll see a helpful list of brands so you can try them out and find what you like to use the most. 1. Snazaroo 2. Ben Nye 3. Tim Gratton 4. Wolfe Bros 5. Fardel 6. Paradise/Mehron 7. Kryolan 8. Derivan Before we move on to applying the paint though and actually creating designs let s discuss the mixing of colors and then various brushes and sponges that will work best to achieve desired effects!

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 7 Mixing Colors Some people decide to mix their own colors from the basic primary colors red, yellow, and blue. If you look the color wheel you can see that by mixing two primary colors you will end up with the secondary color. Primary Colors Blue, red and yellow are called primary colors because they are the basis for other colors. Mix them together in different ways and you can create every other color on the color wheel. The three primary colors are arranged at equal distances from each other on the most commonly used color wheel, shown above.

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 8 Secondary Colors The three secondary colors on a color wheel are located midway between the primary colors. They are created by mixing together equal amounts of the primary colors on either side of them. Green, equal parts of blue and yellow Orange, equal parts of yellow and red Violet, equal parts of blue and red There are examples of other colors you may want to make by also using black and white: Red + White = Pink Blue + White = Sky Blue Purple + White = Lilliac Orange + White = Tan Red + Black = Brown Blue + Black = Navy Blue Green + Black = Forest Green Blue + Green = Aqua Marine

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 9 The best way to experiment is to just sit down and have fun with your paints, you will be more confident with mixing colors in the field if you have done it before. Just use a small amount and figure out the ratio that is needed Tip: Usually, you only need a tiny amount of black

G litter and Jewels Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 10 When face painting you might want to incorporate glitter and jewels to add a whole new dimension to your face painting designs! Glitter, jewels, and other items found at supply stores can also transform your face paintings from amateur to professional! These items can be pretty cheap if you know where to buy them and it s very easy to apply! They work especially well with princess and fantasy designs and kids love them! As with face paint, you need to remember to only use glitter and stick on jewels that are safe to put on a person s skin (eg. body glitter) Do NOT use aluminum glitter polyester only. Aluminum glitter can hurt the eyes and skin. Stick on jewels are so easy to use even kids can do it. Simply peel off the back of the jewel and stick the sticky part of the jewel directly onto the skin or onto the paint that s on the skin. That s it! You have a created a masterpiece! Glitter Gel: This is as its name implies a gel based glitter. It is great for adding to face paint designs or can be used just on its own. You can easily apply using a brush. Small brushes tend to provide more appealing results. Glitter (pearlescent) Powders:

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 11 They are made from very fine glitter, a flour type powder. Mix a little powder with the face paint and apply it to the skin. It will add a magical touch.

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 12 T echniques Face painting techniques are easy to master with a little bit of time and patience. Before starting a design one should visualize the finished design and work to meet that image you have created in your mind. Small designs are easy to create and require the basic skills. If you would like to improve on your basic skills you might look into classes offered at community colleges or craft stores. Some designs are best suited for the beginner artist or are suggested for a young child whose patience may not allow them sit still for long or for the fan that does not want their entire face covered with a design. These face painting tricks will save you time and a lot of frustration! How Do I Hold the Brush Steadily? Firstly make sure you are relaxed and remember to relax your hand. Grip the brush tightly but not too loosely, find a comfortable position for yourself. Try not to focus on keeping your hand still, focus on the painting. Remember practice makes perfect so practice as much as you can!

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 13 What is the best way to apply the paints to the skin? When doing full face designs, first paint a base coat a thin layer of white paint onto the face before painting the colors for the design (You can use a sponge to apply the base coat this is quicker and easier) Using a base coat will make the surface much more even which will then make it much easier and smoother to paint your design on, it will also make the colors stand out more and be vibrant! Remember to let the base coat dry, unless you wish to blend the color in with the white for an effect. How do I paint thin lines? In order to paint a nice thin line use a small pointed brush (that has bristles approx. 1cm long). Make sure the brush is fully saturated with paint. Brush off any excess paint onto your palette before you start. You do not want a big smudge at the start of your line. Use the point of the brush to mark the start of the line then gently pull the tip of the brush steadily across the face in the direction you want. To paint a thin line you will want to try and get it right in one go as it is hard (not impossible, but difficult) to re-touch!!

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 14 How do I paint a fat to thin line? To paint a line that starts off fat and ends thin, use the fattest part of the bristles on a pointed brush to start the line. Pull that part of the brush steadily across the face in the direction you want and gradually apply less weight on the brush as you go, there for ending the line using the thinnest part of the bristles. Tip: Before painting the face practice painting lines on your arm or leg to practice and become comfortable with your brush! How do I blend colors using the drag and brush technique? Paint on the first color you want to blend and while it is still wet, paint a line of the second color near the first and with a brush or sponge drag the second color across to blend in with the first. You will have to do this quickly; before the paint dries otherwise it is not going to blend. How do I paint two colors near each other without them bleeding into each other? Wait for the first color you have painted to dry completely, and then add the second color using a brush that is as dry as possible without being too dry that paint will not rub off the bristles.

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 15 R emoving Face Paints Safely When removing the face paints remember they are water based and there for should wash off easily with soap and water or facial wipes. If the paint does not you will want to make sure that you' are using suitable face and body paints. If the paints you are using are designed for the skin and the paint is not easily removed you might want to select a different brand. If a particular color does not wash off the skin easily but you still enjoy the color, I recommend the color be utilized on top of a white base coat, preventing staining to the skin.

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 16 B rushes, sponges, applicators, Oh my! Just as the faces we are painting; brushes and sponges come in all shapes, sizes, and textures. Let me say first and foremost that the brushes or sponges we use on the face must be of excellent quality, usually with synthetic bristles that are soft enough for the sensitive skin of our faces. Another tip for purchasing brushes is to make sure that they are brushes for water based paint. Four or five brushes of various sizes should be enough for you to get started with experimenting on the face. You will need a small fine point brush for the extremely detailed work that you will find in some of the more exotic designs. The second brush you will need a medium sized softer pointed brush for the bolder strokes and a larger brush for filling in the larger areas of the design that you have previously outlined. As you perfect your technique and progress in your ability you will want more specialized brushes to achieve desired effects such as an angled brush to blend two face paint colors together and a fan shaped brush to achieve the feathered edge effect. As you become more of an expert you will discover a large variety of brushes but as artists do, you will have your favorites that you turn to over and over again.

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 17 Sponges are used to blend base colors that cover a large area. Sponges help to blend the paint to give a smooth effect with the paint. Sponges can be used to create clean lines and edge effects with the paint colors. An excellent tip for sponges is to cut them into multiple pieces. This will allow you to get twice as many sponges for your money but even more important you can use the cut edge to create sharp lines and edges in your design! Imagine you can create whole face paint designs using only sponges, bending and shaping them to create different effects!

G etting Started! Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 18 When beginning, always start with a clean face, freshly washed with soap and water. Remember to start off with a light application of paint and add as needed. Too much applied in the beginning can result in clumping and will not create a smooth look on your face. Always be careful around the eye area. Paint that can be removed with soap and water is recommended for use on children and active adults since they clean up easier and are more comfortable to wear. Be sure to test your paint on a small area first to make sure that it does not irritate the skin Tip: Moisturizers can cause paints to smear off quickly.

B asic Face Painting Designs Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 19 The following designs are simple to paint and fun to create! Grab some colors and have some fun creating these designs! Balloon: Draw the outline of the balloon. I would select black paint or a shade darker than you tend to use to fill in the design for the outline color. Fill the outlined design in with the color of choice and draw a string with white or black paint. For a larger design, add multiple balloons of different sizes. Car: Toddler boys love race car designs because of the movie cars and the popular sport of NASCAR racing. Choose a fun racy color such as orange, yellow or red, and draw an outline of a car with black paint. Fill the car design in with your color of choice. Add four wheels, and a few flames (instructions below) behind the back tires for special effects.

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 20 Butterfly: Girls tend to be the biggest fans of the butterfly designs. To create the butterfly, draw the outline of two wings (using black or a darker shade of the fill color) make a long narrow body in the center, and add two antennae on the top of the head. Pick colorful pastel or bright vivid paint to fill in the wings of the butterfly. Get creative and use your imagination. Flames: Flames are quick and easy and are loved by girls and boys alike. To create fierce flames, grab some black paint and make a jagged, haphazard design resembling a lightning bolt. Fill in with red or orange, and yellow highlights. Remember sponges are best for shading or blending colors together! Hearts: Hearts are one of the easiest creations to make. Get creative and fill in hearts with bright colors such as purple, pink or red. Write words in the center or draw several together overlapping one another.

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 21 Lightning Bolt: For a lightning bolt, make a jagged symbol and fill in with bright yellow, silver, gold or whatever your vision of the color of lightning maybe! Turtle: Turtles are fun and easy to paint. Using black paint, outline a small shell. Add a head and four legs. Fill in shell with dark green paint, and then apply bright green paint in small circles to add believable decoration to the shell Once you start practicing basic techniques, you will discover just how easy face painting can be and the ideas and inspirations will soon start to flow! Now try some of my more advanced designs:

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 28 Step 3 Again using the pink paint, paint the nose using a medium brush. Using another medium brush loaded with black paint, add some bushy eyebrows by doing some sweeping strokes. Paint a vertical line from under the nose across the top lip Paint some large teeth outlines under the bottom lip. Finally, paint some black dots using the small brush under the nose and add some whiskers. You can also add some hair detail to the chin and under the eyes if you wish. S tep 2 Using a large brush, load it with black paint and paint some friendly curved eye brows. Paint the nose by painting the whole end of the nose. 32 Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 32 Step 3 Using a large brush, continue with black paint and paint on the face some patches. Be sure not to paint too many. Using the small brush paint some fine lines out of each dot for the whiskers.

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 33 Skeleton Step 1 Using a sponge or large brush cover the entire face with white leaving space around the eyes. S tep 2 Using a medium brush, load it with black paint and paint black around the eyes. Now paint the nose trying to make the shape shown. This will give the effect of a skull. Using a small brush add a detailed line on the forehead to make it appear like a hairline crack.

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 36 Step 3 Finally using a small brush paint a round blob on the nose and add 8 legs to create a small spider. Spider webs can also be painted on the cheeks or for extra effect you could add wax and make them appear as warts.

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 37 Pink Cat The cat design is very popular with little girls and is a nice quick design to complete. Step 1 First we need to apply a base coat of white to the face using a soft sponge. Apply the paint from the eyebrows down to the chin so the face is lightly covered. Step 2 Now add a pink ring around the white face, covering above the eyebrows round the cheeks and down to the chin. Blend in the edges so the pink and white have a soft edge. S tep 3 Once the base coats are dry use a medium brush and paint the eyebrows, ears nose and mouth using black paint. The eyebrows can be achieved by painting over the natural eyebrows and making them as extravagant as you want. The ears are simply two triangles on the forehead meeting in between the eyebrows. For the nose you can paint the bottom of the natural nose and up the edges slightly to achieve a small cat s nose. Paint a vertical line from the nose down the top of the lip and join to the mouth. The mouth is simply a black line expanding off of the top of the lips. You can add two teeth by painting two triangles underneath the mouth on the chin.

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 38 Step 4 Add the freckles by painting black dots above the mouth. You can also add some detail around the eyes like eyelashes. Step 5 small brush, paint the tongue with a pink or red and outline this Using a with black when it is dry enough. Meow

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 39 Tiger There are more in depth designs that are still kid friendly such as the basic tiger design. Step 1 First apply an orange ring around the edge of the face covering above the eye brows, round the side of the face down to the chin using a sponge. Step 2 Next, blend in a light yellow to the center of the face covering every where trying to make the orange and yellow have a soft edge where they join. Step 3 Once the base coats have dried you can use a medium brush to paint on the eye brows and whiskers. For the eye brows use an accurate upward stroke, making the eyebrows as symmetrical as possible. You can make these as large or as small as you like but I like to make them quite large with a jagged edge. The whiskers can be achieved by painting rough sideways

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 40 stroke just under the nose to above the lip and then again under the lip creating almost a white beard. Step 4 When dry you can add defining features using a small to medium brush and the color black. Simply apply a black outline around the edge of the eyebrows. Next paint a little bit to the underside of the nose and a small triangle above the top lip. You can then give the tiger its stripes by painting two stripes on the forehead and one either side of the cheeks. Step 5 A few finishing touches such as freckles and highlights in the beard using more black paint and you have completed a fantastic tiger design. You will find this design one of the most popular designs you will do!

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 41 Spider Man A second design that has been really popular among children has been Spider Man! Step 1 Use a sponge and the color red to paint the entire face with a base coat. Step 2 Using a brush tip outline the entire red face base coat with black as well as creating a black circle around each eye socket. Step 3 Using the circles around the eyes, create a web look by drawing lines at various points from the eye circle to the outside outline of the face. Step 4 At various points of those lines connect them inwardly creating a web like appearance.

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 42 Hulk The Incredible Hulk is another design that is popular among boys. Step 1 To begin you need to select the green paint and apply a base coat to the entire face using a sponge. When applying the base coat do not forget the eyelids. If the subject would like their neck included go ahead and apply the base coat to the neck at this time. Step 2 Take a second sponge and blend a dab of black to make a dark grey color on the eyelids, and other areas on the face but not a solid color of black. Remember you are blending the black in areas to give tone to the Hulk skin color. Step 3 Once this is complete and you are satisfied with the appearance apply black to the mouth area creating black lips creating a black block around the mouth area. Step 4 Take a medium tip brush and paint dark eye brows. Start at the inside of the eyebrow and use an upward stroke when reaching the end of the brow towards the outside of the face.

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 43 Step 5 Take the same brush and outline the black block you previously painted around the mouth area. Step 6 For the final touch you will need to use a medium tip brush to create the teeth. Inside the black box around the mouth areas, using one stroke, blot upper and lower teeth within the black box. This design is enough to make everyone take a second look!

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 44 Joker The Joker character from the Batman movies has recently become popular again due to the newest addition The Dark Knight. Step 1 To begin apply a white base coat to the entire face including the eyelids. Step 2 Next, using a brush, apply a coat of the color black directly to the eyelid from the lashes to the eyebrow. Below the bottom eyelashes you will want to create a heavy runny look with the black as if heavy mascara running below the eyes. Step 3 To create the forehead wrinkles that the Joker has, take a smaller tip brush and have the subject crinkle their brow and just line the natural wrinkles. Step 4 Lastly, we will create the trademark Joker smile! First, using the color red and a small tip brush color in the subject s natural lips and lip line. Extend the natural smile from the corner of each side of the mouth in outward and upward stroke. This will create the Joker s smile that can t help but cause people to take notice!

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 45 Pirate Step 1 Start by applying black with a stipple sponge to the lower part of the face to make stubble. Pirates don't shave!! Step 2 Give a bushy appearance to one eyebrow using a medium tip brush and the color black. Step 3 Around the next eye using a sponge, color in the eye socket area giving an appearance of an eye patch. Step 4 Using a sponge create the appearance of a bandana on the forehead area. Add orange (or any color) across the forehead for a bandana. Step 5 Outline the eye patch and add a strap. Also outline the bandana, adding a couple of black lines across the orange to give the impression of the material being folded and outline the knot.

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 46 Step 6 For a bloodthirsty pirate you can add a cut or scar. Make the middle of the red line thicker than either end and outline in black.

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 47 Puppy Dog Step 1 First, sponge the whole face with light brown including the lips. Step 2 Use a medium sized brush to paint dark brown around the eyes to create circular patches. You can give the patch a fur like effect by making the edge of the circle rough. Step 3 Once the light brown is dry, paint from the forehead down the center of the face, over and around the nose to create the puppy s face. Please note the brown paint must be dry otherwise the white will smudge and not give the desired effect. Step 4 Once the white paint on the nose is dry you can paint a black nose over the top. You can also use a pointed brush to paint the freckles and also the eyebrows using slow accurate strokes.

Face Painting Made Easy Kelly Van Dorn 48 Step 5 Now paint on the tongue by selecting a nice shade of red/pink and painting onto the chin from the lip. And that's all there is to it!
