2 An Artists Alphabet... For centuries, artists have been using the simple alphabet and the familiar ABC book as inspiration for their work. This exhibition celebrates the diverse themes which emerge from this humble starting point. A myriad of pictorial approaches from a selection of well-known British artists and printmakers will form an artists alphabet with a difference revealing the alphabet as something to be enjoyed well beyond childhood. An alphabet of prints & original works from Alice Pattullo, Chloe Cheese, Christopher Brown, Christopher Moss, Clive Hicks-Jenkins, Debbie George, Ed Kluz, Emily Sutton, Jan Brewerton, Mark Hearld, Pat Bradbury, Tom Frost and Tom Wood will fill the Gallery for this fun and enlightening take on the traditional ABC. Please contact the Gallery if you would like further information on any of the works in this catalogue, or if you would like to arrange to see any of the pieces in the exhibition. 31 About the artists: Alice Pattullo - is an illustrator based in East London. She regularly explores British traditions, folklore and superstitions in her personal work, producing limited edition screen prints for exhibition and sale in various galleries and shops across the UK. Alice also works frequently to commission and has collaborated with big name brands including Sainsbury s, Fortnum & Mason, The V&A and Crabtree & Evelyn. Alice exhibited her largest solo show to date 'Of House and Home' at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in the Summer of Chloe Cheese is an illustrator, artist and printmaker, whose work focuses often on everyday objects, observed in situ and paired back to their most simple form. She was born in London, to artist parent Sheila Robinson and Bernard Cheese and was brought up in Great Bardfield, Essex, home also, to celebrated figures Edward Bawden, Michael Rothenstein and others. Chloe studied art at Cambridge Art School ( ) and then at the Royal College of Art ( ). Her work has been show in many exhibition, in the UK and abroad and her work is held in many public collections such as the V&A, and the Arts Council of Great Britain. Chloe is patron of the Association of illustrators and has illustrated several books. She is also a trustee of the Curwen Print Study Centre near Cambridge. Christopher Brown was born in London and studied Graphic Design at Middlesex University before attending the Royal College of Art in London. Christopher was introduced to, and eventually assisted, Edward Bawden, the master of the linocut print. It was Bawden who encouraged him to explore this medium, one which Christopher is now famed for. In 2012 Merrell Books published An Alphabet of London and today, he is currently working on An Alphabet of England some of which will be on show as part of the exhibition A is for Art.

32 Christopher Moss trained at Bath Academy of Art ( ) and has a studio in the Yorkshire Dales and in Edinburgh. He works in diverse media, including silkscreen, woodcut, pen and ink, egg tempera and oils. Christian iconography and the design of early books are crucial influences on his style. Clive Hicks-Jenkins - Born in Newport in 1951, Clive Hicks- Jenkins worked for 25 years as a choreographer and theatre director before concentrating full-time on painting. His work has now been acquired by all the principal public collections in Wales as well as others in the United Kingdom, and his artist s books are found in libraries internationally. Debbie George s work is inspired by the everyday items she finds in her life. Seeing the beauty in the simplest of objects from food to flowers and many things in-between, no item is too benign for her creative process. Debbie paints using the ancient technique of gesso which involves mixing white paint with chalk, gypsum, pigment or any combination of these which she applies in layers and then scratches and scrapes to give her work a wonderful depth and texture. Debbie lives and works in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. Ed Kluz - is a Yorkshire artist, illustrator and printmaker. Born in 1980 Ed was brought up in the Yorkshire village of Swaledale before studying joining the Winchester School of Art where he studied fine art between Ed s work explores historic landscapes, buildings and objects with a contemporary eye. The ideas of early Romanticism, the Picturesque movement and antiquarian representations of topography and architecture underpin his approach to image making. Ed Kluz has exhibited his work across the country and received commissions from the V&A, Folio Society, John Murray publishers, Little Toller Books and St Jude s fabrics.

33 Emily Sutton - is a York based artist and illustrator with an international audience. Her work is influenced by the Yorkshire landscape and countryside, as well as the peculiar, curious and wonderful objects often discovered in antique shops, museums and galleries. Sutton studied at York College, then completed her BA in Illustration at Edinburgh College of Art in Sutton works with a range of different mediums such as painting, prints, drawing and hand sculpted objects. She has notably been commissioned by various distinguished clients such as Hermes, Betty s Tearooms, and Penguin. Sutton has also illustrated for numerous children s books by Nicola Davis and the V&A commissioned Clara Button and the Magical Hat Day by Amy de la Haye, amongst many others. In Emily Sutton s largest solo exhibition Town and Country was displayed at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Jan Brewerton - studied for a B.A in Fine Art at Coventry University, and, after two years living and teaching in Italy, completed her post-graduate studies at Goldsmith s College, London. Her work has its foundations in domesticity. In its details, its memories and its rituals. Individual works begin as close studies of everyday domestic objects motifs arising in the forms of vessels, artefacts, implements, textiles, fruit forms, patterns and natural materials. Jan produces small, limited edition, hand-pulled prints on her Press in her Devon Studio. Mark Hearld - York based artist Mark Hearld (b. 1974) studied Illustration at Glasgow College of Art, going on to complete an MA at the Royal College of Art in Natural History Illustration. Working across various mediums such as collage, lithographic prints, painting, linocut prints and ceramics, Hearld s work is also available on printed fabrics and textiles. His work is influenced by the natural environment, the British countryside and wildlife. Hearld has worked for numerous prestigious clients from Boden to Tate Britain and has collaborated with numerous museums and galleries in producing solo exhibitions and curating collections, most recently at Compton Verney in Warwickshire. His work is held in public and private collections across the world and his originals are highly sought-after.

34 Pat Bradbury is a freelance image maker and illustrator, based in Leeds. He uses drawing, collage and text to create strange and silly pictures (his own words). Pat graduated from the University of Brighton in 2011, since then he has led a life as exciting and inspiriting as his colourful works of art, teaching art in Vietnam, creating commissions for a Papa New Guinean dance hall in Sydney, collaborating on a site specific art project across an Icelandic fjord. After a spell in London, Pat now teaches at Leeds Art University, when he isn t fulfilling commissions for various, exciting clients and creating his own playful work. Much of his personal work focusses around refining and stripping down collage elements to create paired back investigations of form and material.. Tom Frost Printmaker and illustrator Tom Frost graduate from Falmouth College of Arts in After working as an illustrator in Bristol for many years, he now divides his time between print making, restoring his crumbling Georgian house in rural Wales and raising a young family. In recent years he has worked with clients including The V&A, Perry's Cider, Art Angels, Selvedge Magazine, Nomnom Chocolate and Yorkshire Sculpture Park. His work highlights a fascination for old matchboxes, stamps, folk art, tin toys, children's books and the natural world. Frost strives to produce items that people will cherish for many years to come. Tom Wood - is one of Yorkshire's much celebrated artists. Since graduating from Sheffield School of Art in 1978 he has exhibited his work worldwide. Most recently his celebrated portraits of Professor Lord Robert Winston and Alan Bennett, both commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery, London were on display at the Australian National Portrait Gallery, Canberra. Recent commissions also include portraits for the National Trust, Warwick University and for the Harewood Trust. Aside from his portraits, Tom is increasingly becoming known for his works which are inspired by the natural views from his studio; the wildlife, birds, green-houses; each of which could be easily considered mundane artefacts and fauna like the green-house or common starling in a wonderfully charismatic manner.
