NCFE 1 / level 2 Certificate in Creative Studies: Art and Design external unit Task 1: 4 hours Task 2: 16 hours Final outcome / task 3: 7 hours, controlled conditions to produce the final outcome. Task 4: 3 hours
The theme for the external unit is Ephemera. The word Ephemera means things that exist or are used or enjoyed for only a short time. Examples could be: Paper Plastic or time items Tickets Sweet wrappers Food wrappers Letters Newspapers Postcards Stamps Lolly sticks Straws Receipts Snowflakes Dreams Rainbows Memories Georges Braque Robert Rauschenberg Mary Flynn
In 2009 Mary Flynn started to collect and sort material salvaged from the shores of the Isle of Wight. The work is a personal response to the materials gathered and draws on traditions and conventions used by artists, makers, archaeologists and social historians. At the end of 2010 eight banners had been stitched. Working with photographer Stuart Parsons these banners were returned to the sea to be recorded back in the environment that transported the material to the shore. By 2012 there were 16 banners, with sail numbers identifying the year in which the material was collected will be the last year of collecting and archiving the material. Already exhibited in a number of venues including the ONCA Gallery Brighton, the 'Sea Banners' and giclee prints of details of the banners returned to the sea were exhibited at the Knitting and Stitching Show, London Mary Flynn -gallery/maryflynn/3152/
Georges Braque was at the forefront of the revolutionary art movement of Cubism. Braque's work throughout his life focused on still life's and means of viewing objects from various perspectives through colour, line, and texture. While his collaboration with Pablo Picasso and their Cubist works are best known, Braque had a long painting career that continued beyond Cubism. Braque was also often dedicated to quiet periods in his studio rather than to being a personality in the art world. Braque s collages incorporate used tickets and bits of newspapers.
Robert Rauschenberg began making silkscreen paintings in He would screenprint images from books and magazines, along with his own photographs, onto the canvas, then apply painterly brushstrokes reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism. His intention was 'to escape the familiarity of objects and collage'. Rauschenberg collected rubbish that he found on the floor and either collaged them directly in his work or copied and painted them. Often these would be images and articles from newspapers.
Louise Baldwin has exhibited her work throughout Britain, in America, Japan and Germany. Baldwin s recent pieces incorporate found bits and pieces and domestic packaging alongside fabric and simple stitch to produce rich small scale textiles that explore some of the complexities of contemporary life. My current work is a combination of collaged mundane domestic packaging, layers of stitched imagery and pom poms. Pieces are cut down and added to, turned upside down, stitched and reorganised until they seem right.
El Anatsui is an internationally acclaimed artist who transforms simple materials into complex assemblages that create distinctive visual impact. He uses resources typically discarded such as liquor bottle caps and cassava graters to create sculpture that defies categorization. His use of these materials reflects his interest in reuse, transformation, and an intrinsic desire to connect to his continent while transcending the limitations of place. His work can interrogate the history of colonialism and draw connections between consumption, waste, and the environment, but at the core is his unique formal language that distinguishes his practice.
Ryan Jude Novelline is an Italian-American contemporary artist and clothing designer He is known as the Prince Charming of avantgarde and eco fashion. The storybook gown was constructed entirely out of recycled and discarded children s Golden Books. The paper skirt is comprised entirely of the original book illustrations sewn together with metallic gold thread. The bodice is made from the books foil spines backed by tape adhesive.
