2 GRIDS & GUTTERS There s a lot to appreciate about the comics medium, especially if you re a graphic designer. Frames, gutters, word baloons, caption boxes, and illustrated sound effects are a handful of the elements a cartoonist can use to create a comic page or strip. As such, the best cartoonists consider how to balance layout, colour/contrast, space vs. counter-space, typography, and most importantly how to convey a story in the most effective way. As a cartoonist, I also consider these problems in my design work. I try my best to present the thousand words in a picture in the clearest and most concise way.

Inspired by the catalyst for the entire play, these blades all point toward the play s title, written using characters reminiscent of the Roman alphabet during his reign. The rest of the event information was moved to the bottom of the poster, giving the illustration a solid frame.

Using a three-colour scheme and the same grid for each brochure, I made the type clear and easy to read within a gate-fold style layout.

The comic is inspired by a lot of 90s action film and cartoon elements both Western and Japanese animation and much of the books designs owed a lot to that. I implied a constant use of vibrant colours and neon effects in the cover art, complimented with bold, blocky fonts.

The collective s website consists of a general blog, as well as sites for each of our different comic series. While most of these sites are purposed to have their own look and feel, they all share the same branding in the headers and footers of each site, letting the visitors of the sites understand the relationship between each product.

I was involved in kitestring s marketing campaign for the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra season. The program was designed using contemporary, geometric type, and used a colour palette to coordinate every event by category, from solo music performances to stage acts. As well, a number of advertisements were created to compliment the design of the season program, such as promotional postcards, ads for the Bay Observer publication, and digital display banners.

Occasionally, I ll experiment with making fonts without planning based on my personal illustration style. The idea behind Trinh Type Sans was to create a tall font family that would work well as both large type and body type. As well, it works well as text for captions, both in article layouts and in caption boxes in comics.
