2 Fabric Requirements 1 package 10"-square Tonga Treats in Lemon Poppy colorway (two squares each of twenty fabrics) yards Tonga-B9521 Lime yards Tonga-B9448 Navy (includes binding) yards XTonga-B9596 Beluga (backing) 86" x 98" batting Supplies " square ruler Paper or template plastic Cutting From Tonga B9448 Navy: Cut two 2 1 2" x width-of-fabric (WOF) strips. Sub-cut the strips into six 2 1 2" x 10" rectangles. Cut twenty 3" x WOF strips. Divide each strip roughly into thirds to yield fifty-eight 3" x approximately 14" rectangles. Cut seven 4" x WOF strips. Sub-cut the strips into twenty-six 4" x 10" rectangles. Cut nine 3 1 2" x WOF strips for borders. Cut nine 2 1 4" x WOF strips for binding. From Tonga B9521 Lime: Cut seven 2 1 2" x WOF strips. Sub-cut the strips into twenty-six 2 1 2" x 10" rectangles. Cut nine 3" x WOF strips. Divide each strip roughly into thirds to yield twenty-six 3" x approximately 14" rectangles. Cut one 10" x WOF strip. Sub-cut two 10" squares from the strip. Place these two squares with the rest of the Tonga Treat squares so you have forty-two 10" squares. Block Planning 1. Trace the Wonky Patch Template (figure 1) onto paper or template material and label the sides. Cut it out. Note: In the project, there are places where two blocks with matching Wonky Patch fabrics face each other to form an oblong shape. These are made from one Block A and one Block A reversed. If you can t tell the difference between the fabric right and wrong sides (as is typical of batiks), you don t need to cut these separately just reverse one of the matching fabrics when stitching the blocks. Block A 2. Using the quilt photo as a reference, choose thirteen pairs of matching 10" squares to frame on three sides with the B9448 Navy rectangles. These partner blocks of the same fabric are sewn together to form the oblong wonky shape, Block A. Pay careful attention to the few pieces that have a one-way design and place those directional designs parallel to Wonky Patch Side A. 3. Stack as many of these as you are comfortable cutting at one time, matching the raw edges. Place the Wonky Patch template on the stack of squares and cut around it through all layers. Set the cut pieces aside and label them Block A. Block B 4. Use a ruler and rotary cutter to remove 1" from Side C of the template. Use this new template to cut the remaining sixteen 10" squares for Block B. (figure 2) 5. Study the quilt photo to find the three individual Wonky Patches surrounded on four sides by B9448 Navy. One of them is from 1" the square of the same fabric (B9448 Navy). Label and set these aside for the Navy B Blocks. The remaining Wonky Patches are for the Lime B Blocks. Block Construction Block A 6. Center and stitch a 4" x 10" B9448 Navy rectangle onto the Wonky Patch Side C selected for Block A. Press the seam allowances toward the rectangle. Trim so that the angle of the Wonky Patch shape continues into the frame as shown in figure Center and stitch a 3" x 14" Wonky Patch Template A B9448 Navy rectangle to Wonky Patch Sides B and D. Some fabric will hang over the ends. Press the seam allowances in one direction so they will nest when pairs are placed adjacent to one another. 8. Align and center a " ruler on Side A of the block. The frame seam should be " from each side at the lower edge as shown in figure 4. Check to be sure there is fabric under all parts of the ruler. Trim to " square. Repeat for remaining A fig. 4 Blocks. Make twenty-six. 1¾" 1¾" Block B 9. Center and stitch a matching " x 10" rectangle of B9521 Lime to Wonky Patch Sides B and D. Press the seam allowances toward the rectangles. Trim so that the angle of the Wonky Patch continues into the frames. (Refer back to figure 3.) 10. Center and stitch a matching B9521 Lime 3" x 14" rectangle to Wonky Patch Sides A and C. Press the seam allowances toward the rectangles. B C fig. 3 D fig. 2

3 11. Place the " ruler on the block, turning so that there is fabric under all parts of the ruler and no sides of the Wonky Patch are completely parallel to the edge of the ruler. Trim to " square. (figure 5) 12. Repeat steps 9-11 with the remaining strips of B9521 Lime and B9448 Navy to make sixteen of Block B thirteen Lime and three Navy. Quilt Top Assembly 13. Lay out six blocks across and seven rows down with the block groupings and orientations shown in the quilt photo. Stitch the rows together. Press the seam allowances of each row in the opposite direction to that of the previous row. 14. Stitch the rows together and press the seam allowances to one side. 15. Stitch the " B9448 Navy strips together end to end diagonally to make one long strip. Cut two pieces " long and two pieces " long. Sew the short pieces to the top and bottom of the quilt center and the long pieces to the sides. Press seams toward the borders. Finishing 16. Layer the quilt top, batting and backing and quilt as desired. 17. Stitch the binding strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Fold and press the resulting long strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Stitch to the quilt front, matching raw edges and mitering the corners. 18.
