Red Cross What you make: A 58 by 60 simply pieced quilt. The offset cross design makes a stunning quilt. This quilt uses a variety of grey and red fabrics to make the cross blocks.

2 Red Cross What you make: A 58 by 60 simply pieced quilt. The offset cross design makes a stunning quilt. This quilt uses a variety of grey and red fabrics to make the cross blocks. It is a fabulous way to highlight beautiful fabric. What you need: 2.3m (92 ) white fabric - background 1.5m (60 ) grey fabrics -grey blocks 0.3m (12 ) red fabrics - red blocks 0.4m (16 ) grey print - binding batting backing fabric What you do: Cutting: From white background fabric cut: three hundred and twenty-eight 2 ½ squares seventy-seven 2 ½ by 6 ½ rectangles From grey fabrics cut: one hundred and forty-four 2 ½ squares sixty-seven 2 ½ by 6 ½ rectangles From red fabrics cut: twenty 2 ½ squares ten 2 ½ by 6 ½ rectangles From grey print for binding cut: six 2 by width of fabric strips

3 Make the blocks: Stitch a white 2 ½ square to each side of a grey 2 ½ square to make a unit. Make two of these units. Stitch one unit to each side of a grey 2 ½ by 6 ½ rectangle. This completes the block. Make sixty-seven grey blocks. Make ten red blocks n the same way. Make ten part grey blocks by completing only the first step.

4 Make the rows: This quilt is made in ten rows. Each row has six grey blocks, one red block and one part block. Each of the blocks is separated by a white 2 ½ by 6 ½ rectangle. Quilt layout:

5 Make rows one and two following the diagram below: row 1 row 2 even numbered rows start with a half block blocks separated by 2 ½ inch by 6 ½ inch white rectangle odd numbered rows finish with a half block Stitch rows one and two together matching seams where they meet.

6 Make rows three, four, five and six following the diagram below: rows 1 and 2 row 3 row 4 row 5 row 6 Stitch each row one to the previous row matching seams where they meet.

7 Make rows seven, eight, nine and ten following the diagram below: rows 1 to 6 row 7 row 8 row 9 row 10 Stitch each row one to the previous row matching seams where they meet. This completes the quilt top.

Quilting the quilt: Prepare the backing fabric to be 64 inches by 62 inches. Layout the backing fabric on a flat surface with right side down. Smooth out all wrinkles.

Layer batting onto backing fabric. Smoothing all wrinkles again. Layer quilt onto batting, right side up and pin all three layers together securely using safety pins. quilt top, right side up batting quilt back, right side down This quilt has been machine quilted. Using a walking foot machine stitch around each of the cross shapes. Use free motion sewing to quilt a small looping shape into the white background. Trim away excess backing and batting after quilting.

Binding the quilt: Stitch six grey 2 inch binding strips together

9 Binding the quilt: Stitch six grey 2 inch binding strips together using a diagonal seam to form one long strip. Trim away excess fabric from each seam, fold strip in half along the length and press. fold Match the raw edges of the binding to the edge of the quilt at the centre of one side. Attach binding with a ¼ inch seam. Stitch along side until ¼ inch from corner. Backstitch and cut threads. Miter binding in the corner of the quilt by folding the binding up to create a 45 angle. Holding this in place turn the quilt, realign the binding to the edge and begin stitching with a ¼ inch seam along the next side. Continue mitering corners in this way. On reaching the starting point overlap the binding for an inch, then trim to size. Turn the binding to the back and slip stitch into place by hand.
