Fabric Requirements 1 package 2 1 2" Tonga Treat strips in erry risp colorway (forty strips, two each of twenty different fabrics) yards Tonga-9847 Pearl (block background) yards Tonga-9378 Ginger (sashing and inner border) yard Tonga-9843 Fig (outer border) 2/3 yard Tonga-9855 rimson (binding) 2 yards XTonga-9596 eluga (106" wide) or 4 yards of any 45"- wide Tonga print (backing) 69" 84" batting Fabric glue utting From erry risp Tonga Treat strips: Separate the strips into two groups of twenty strips so that each group has identical colors. ut strips into " 4 1 2" rectangles, keeping the groups together. From 9847 Pearl: ut five 4 1 2" WOF strips. Sub-cut strips into sity-nine 2 1 2" 4 1 2" rectangles. ut ten 2 1 2" WOF strips. Sub-cut the strips into " squares. Sub-cut the strips into the following sizes: One 4 1 2" " strip One 4 1 2" " strip Two 4 1 2" " strips Si 4 1 2" " strips Three 4 1 2" 8 1 2" strips Five 4 1 2" 6 1 2" strips Si 4 1 2" 2 1 2" strips ut nine 2 1 2" WOF strips. Sub-cut three strips into fortyeight 2 1 2" squares. Save the remaining si strips for the inner borders. From 9843 Fig: ut seven 5 1 2" WOF strips for outer borders. From 9855 rimson: ut seven 2 1 2" WOF strips for binding. ragon Scale urving The curves are made by manipulating the folded inserts. This is easiest when the folds are enclosed by seams. All folds are bias folds and can easily be folded back and smoothed into a curved shape, which is then topstitched to make the curves permanent. Topstitch the curves of each block before sewing the block into the quilt setting. First stitch wherever folded inserts are caught in the seam. Some folded inserts along the perimeter of the block are best stitched down after the blocks are framed within the sashing. HINT: Use your sewing machine needle as a third hand by inserting the needle in the starting point of the fold. First lock your stitches by stitching in place, then pull back the bias fold and fold it back on itself. Smooth out the curve and hold down while carefully stitching close to its outer edge with a normal straight stitch. Lock stitches after curve is completed and move to net curve. Note: Some curves are topstitched after the quilt has been assembled in sections. Folding & Preparation Note: In the illustrations, the white pieces indicate 9847 Pearl; the small dots indicate 9378 Ginger. All other patterning indicates random colors. You will have some etra pieces left over, but that will help with the color selection for the blocks. Use the leftovers to make a pillow or other small project. 1. Press 160 assorted 2 1 2" 4 1 2" strips in half width-wise, wrong sides together from one Tonga strip group. Repeat the process with three 9847 Pearl 2 1 2" 4 1 2" strips. (figure 1) 160 assorted 3 fig To make the folded triangles, press the following in half diagonally, wrong sides together: seventy-nine 9847 Pearl 2 1 2" squares and twenty-four 9378 Ginger 2 1 2" squares. 3 asic onstruction Technique locks will be made from the individual units described below. Refer back to these unit instructions as you construct the blocks. 3. Note: Each dragon scale is made up of two coordinating " " rectangles. The top of the scale is made from a flat rectangle and the bottom of the scale from a matching folded rectangle. Unit A ouble-topped ragon Scale Place a 9847 Pearl " folded triangle on the top left and right corners of a " " Tonga rectangle. Adhere the triangle raw-edge corners with a dab of glue. unit A Unit Left-topped ragon Scale Place a 9847 Pearl " folded triangle on the top left corner of a " " Tonga rectangle and adhere the triangle rawedge corners with a dab of glue. unit unit Unit Right-topped ragon Scale Place a 9847 Pearl " triangle on the top right corner of a " " Tonga rectangle and adhere the triangle raw edge corners with a dab of glue. Unit Sandwich a " " Tonga folded strip between the short sides of two " " Tonga strips. The " " flat Tonga strips should be right sides together with the folded strip between them. (Note: The block diagrams will indicate whether or not to use 9847 Pearl for the flat " " Tonga strips.) Line up the raw edges on the top and right sides with the folded edge down. There will be a 1/4" gap below the fold for a subsequent seam allowance. Stitch along the right edge of the sandwich, unfold the strips and press to make a centered dimensional triangle. Press the back seam open. Unit E Sandwich a " " folded Tonga strip between the short side of a " " strip and a " square. Stitch along the edge, unfold the strips and press to unit E make a dimensional triangle. Unit F Sandwich a " " folded Tonga strip between a " square and the short side of a " " strip. Stitch along the edge, unfold the strips and press to make unit F a dimensional triangle. lock onstruction Note: The letters A through F refer back to the Units described above. All white rectangles and squares shown in the diagrams are 9847 Pearl. lock I Eight dragon scales, constructed in five rows. 4. Stitch the curved dragon-scale edges where possible as described in the curving instructions. 18. Sew the units together to form lock I. Make three of lock I. Step 14 Step Place 9847 Pearl folded triangles on the top scales to make units A, and as shown. 11. Sandwich, then stitch the matching folded bottom scale units, E and F as shown. 12. 5 Sashing Scales Twelve random dragon scales will be placed within the sashing strips. 19. Sandwich a " " folded Tonga strip between the short right sides of two 9378 Ginger " squares. Line up the raw edges on the top and right side, with + the fold facing down. (figure 3) There will be a 1/4" inch gap below the fold for a subsequent seam allowance. fig Stitch along the right edge of the sandwich, unfold the strips and press to make a dimensional triangle. (figure 3) Press back seam open. 21. Sew the dimensional triangle to a matching unit A made with 9378 Ginger folded triangles. (figure 4) + Make twelve different sashing scales. fig. 4 Press to A. Quilt Top Assembly 22. Following the quilt assembly diagram, lay out the blocks and sashing sections. 23. Sew the pieces together in vertical rows and then join the rows together to complete the quilt top center. Press seams toward the sashing. 24. ut two of the "-wide inner border strips (9378 Ginger) in half and sew each of these half strips end to end with a whole " strip of 9378 Ginger to make four border strips. 25. Measure the length of the quilt center and cut two inner border strips that length. Sew the strips to the quilt center sides. Measure the width of the quilt center and cut two inner border strips that length. Sew the strips to the quilt center top and bottom. 26. Sew two 5 1 2"-wide border strips (9843 Fig) end to end to make one long side border. Repeat to make a second long side border. ut one of the remaining 5 1 2"-wide border strips in half and sew each half strip end to end with a whole 5 1 2" strip to make two shorter border strips for the top and bottom. Reapeat step 25 to create the outer borders. Finishing 27. Layer the quilt top, batting and backing and quilt as desired. 28. Stitch the binding strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Fold and press the resulting long strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Stitch to the quilt front, matching raw edges and mitering the corners. 28. Fold the binding to the quilt underside and hand-stitch the folded edge to the quilt back.
