2 Martha s Quilted Wall Hanging The wall hanging is composed of three pieced star blocks, plus a half-block turned on point for the lower end. Each block is numbered according to its place in the finished wall hanging; refer to figure 8 on page 7. The center panel is surrounded with an inner border, and a wide outer border is edged with binding. Straight-line and free-motion quilting techniques are used. The remaining fabric will be used to cut the small patches for the pieced blocks. Place two 2-7/8 fabric () squares right side together with the two 2-7/8 fabric () squares. raw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the fabric () squares and created four pieced squares as directed in the General Instructions. Press the seams on two of the blocks toward the light (marked by * in figures 5 and 6) and press the remaining two seams toward the dark. Square up to 2-1/2 and set aside. 2. Using two of the pieced squares, one 2-1/2 fabric () square, and one 2-1/2 fabric square (), arrange the squares as shown in figure 4. ttach the two top squares and the bottom two squares to create an upper and a lower rectangle. Seam the rectangles to create one large square. Press the seam toward the fabric () square. Square up to 4-1/2 and set aside. 3. ut the remaining 2-7/8 squares diagonally from corner to corner to create two fabric () triangles and two fabric () triangles. 4. Use one fabric () triangle, one fabric () triangle, and one pieced square to create the triangle unit shown in figure 5. Use the remaining triangles and pieced square to create a mirror image triangle unit as shown in figure 6. Press the seams toward the pieced squares. 5. rrange the large pieced square and the two triangle units as shown in figure 7. 7 onstruction Piecing the Top Note: ll seam allowances are 1/4 unless otherwise noted and are included in cutting measurements. 1. rrange the blocks in a horizontal column as shown in figure 8. arefully match the seams and stitch the blocks together. Press the seams up. 2. ttach the inner side borders (B); press the seams toward the borders (fig. 9). 3. ttach the inner top border (B) and press the seam up (fig. 10). 4. dd the inner borders along the edges of the lower point. Stop the stitching at the bottom point where the seam lines cross; the ends of the border strips will be left loose at the lower point (fig. 11). Miter the strips: a. Lay the strips out flat with one on top of the other (fig. 12). b. Lift the end of the upper strip and fold it under to lie directly on top of the lower strip (fig. 13). c. rease the upper strip along the fold (miter line) and draw a line on the lower strip right along the crease of the upper strip (fig. 14). d. Fold the quilt away to expose the ends of the strips. Place the strips right sides together, matching the crease to the drawn line. Stitch in the crease, stopping at the previous stitching line of the inner point (fig. 15). e. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4 and press to one side. 8 5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 using the outer borders (); refer to figure 17. Quilting 1. Layer the backing (wrong side up), batting, and top (right side up) on a flat surface with the top centered over the batting and backing; refer to figure Stitch a line of straight quilting vertically from top to bottom along the two side seams of each full block, and along the inner edges of the inner borders (fig. 17). 3. Quilt the blocks with zigzag channel quilting as shown in figure 18; quilting lines should be spaced 1 apart. Note that some of the quilting lines can be stitched in a zigzag pattern from top to bottom instead of stitching each block separately. The diagonal lines are stitched in both directions in the point area, creating a grid pattern. 4. Quilt the inner border with a loose stipple pattern; refer to the section for free-motion stippling in the General Instructions. 5. Quilt a straight line along the inner edge of the outer border at the bottom of the point; do not stitch up the sides of the border. lso quilt a straight line along the center of the outer borders at the bottom edges of the point (fig. 19). 6. ontinue the diagonal quilting lines, spaced 1-1/2 apart and working up the outer side borders. The diagonal lines will continue across the top outer border, making a mitered design along the center line; refer to the finished drawing. 7. 9 Rod Pocket and Binding 1. Fold the rod pocket strip in half along the length, wrong sides together with long edges meeting and stitch across each short end (fig. 20). Trim the corners, turn right side out, and press. 2. enter the rod pocket along the upper edge of the back side of the quilt with raw edges even. Baste along the raw edges through all layers with a 1/4 seam allowance (fig. 21). 3. Using the binding strips that were cut earlier, piece a long binding strip as directed in the Quilt utting directions. pply the binding to the edges of the wall hanging as described in the General Instructions, pplying a ontinuous Binding. Stitch with a scant 1/4 seam. The raw edges of the rod pocket will be caught in the binding seams. 4. Fold the rod pocket up, away from the quilt. raw a line on the backing 1 below the binding seam along the upper edge of the wall hanging (fig 22). 5. Lay the rod pocket into place with the lower edge along the drawn line. Whip the pocket into place by hand, leaving the ends open for inserting the hanging rod (fig. 23).
