Press seams after sewing. WOF = width of fabric (assumes 0"); LOF = length of fabric. Step : Copy the Foundations Follow the instructions on page to copy the foundations. Cut them out, leaving a margin of paper outside the solid lines. Next, referring to the Block Color Guide for the colorway you are making (page, 9, or ), organize the strips into groups of five, one group for each Block. Step : Cut Background Fabric For most efficient use of the fabric, the fabric pieces for the foundations are pre-cut. Follow the instructions and illustrations below. Background (B). Cut five strips B measuring ½" x WOF. From the ½" strips, cut a total of 9 pieces measuring " x ½". Next cut each piece on the diagonal as shown, making 9 B pieces. Background (B). Cut seven strips B measuring ¾" x WOF. From the ¾" strips, cut a total of 9 pieces measuring ¾" x ¾". Next cut each piece on the diagonal as shown, making 9 B pieces. Border. There are five different size pieces (A-E) cut for the borders. Cut six strips " x WOF then sub-cut them as follows: Strips & : From each, cut two ½" (A) and one 0 /" (E) Strips & : From each, cut two ½" (A) and one /" (B) Strip : Cut two ½" (A) and one /" (D) Strip : Cut two /" (C) Binding. Cut seven strips your preferred binding width (up to ½") x WOF. Step : Cut the Accent Fabric The accent fabric is used in the blocks and the border. Cut as follows: Blocks - Cut one strip at ½" x WOF, then cut twelve ½" squares from it. Next, cut ten strips at " x WOF; from these strips, cut a total of forty-eight pieces each measuring ¼" long. Border - Cut two strips measuring " x WOF, then cut into pieces each " long. Step : Prepare the Pixie Strips The Pixie Strip roll includes forty fabrics, with Fabric # being the topmost strip. Keeping track of the fabrics is very important! Cut out the fabric labels on page and pin to the fabrics in the roll, referring to your color Pixie Strip Guide on page, 0, or as necessary. ½" ¾" Step : Make the Blocks There are eight different blocks (-) in the quilt, and six copies of each are required. Each block is made from a regular and a reversed foundation, separated by an accent fabric strip. To avoid fabric confusion, work on a single Block at a time, completing all six copies before moving on to the next. Block Mark the Foundations. Collect six regular and six reversed foundations. Referring to your Color Guide and taking careful note of the dark-to-light order, mark the appropriate fabric number on each section of each foundation. (The background fabric patches are already marked on the foundations.) As in the illustration below, you will note that the foundations are the mirror image of the final block; this is because the fabric is sewn to the opposite side of the paper. (If you have not foundation pieced before, you just have to trust us on this!) Pre-Cut the Pixie Strips. Cut each Pixie strip used in the block into six pieces, each about ¾" long. Cut each piece on the diagonal as shown, making twelve patches. Sew the Foundations.

Following the Foundation Piecing General Instructions (opposite), make the six regular and six reversed foundations for Block. Complete the Blocks. Complete a block by sewing a ¼" accent strip to the colored-fabric side of a regular and reversed foundation (see Block illustration on page ). Press seams toward the accent strip. Write the block number on the foundation paper! Repeat to make a total of six. Blocks measure ¼" x ¼" including seam allowances. Blocks - Using the same process as Block, and working on one block at a time, make six each of Blocks -. Step : Make the Units Four blocks plus a ½" accent square are sewn together to make a unit. Each unit uses different blocks, and care must be taken to ensure that the blocks are rotated correctly. Referring to the Unit & Quilt Assembly diagram on page for the block numbers and orientation, follow the instructions below to make a unit. Repeat to make a total of units. Units measure " square including seam allowances. Sewing a Unit Using a Partial Seam " " Foundation Piecing General Instructions The foundations are pre-printed with labels for each of the background sections. Before beginning, be sure to handwrite the fabric numbers for the colored pieces onto each section of the foundations. You can begin piecing at either end of each foundation. All patches are slightly oversized and must be trimmed as instructed below before sewing on the next patch. Pin a B piece over the first area on a foundation, wrong side of the fabric against the unprinted side of the paper. The fabric should cover the finished area and the indicated seam allowance, plus extend at least ¼" beyond the solid line separating it from the next section. With the paper on top, fold the foundation back along the solid line and trim the fabric ¼" beyond the fold. Next, lay the fabric piece for the adjacent area on the first patch, right sides together, aligning the raw edges near the solid line. Pin in place if necessary. Double-check to make sure that the top patch will completely cover the next area when sewn. Adjust if necessary. Turn the foundation over and, using a short stitch length, sew through all layers along the line on the printed side of the foundation. (A short stitch length makes it easier to remove the paper later.) Flip the fabric right side up and press the seam. With the paper on top, fold the foundation back along the solid line that marks the next seam line. Trim the fabric ¼" beyond the fold. Add the next patch. A B Repeat this process until the foundation is complete. After completing a foundation, press well and trim the outside edge of the fabric and foundation along the outer solid lines of the foundation. Do not remove the paper. lower edge of A and half of the top of the accent square free. This is the partial seam. D C Next, sew B to the unit just made, using a regular seam ; this seam spans the full block and the accent square. Sew C to the unit just made, also using a regular, full-length seam. Using a partial seam allows the unit to be made without an inset seam. Sew A to the accent square, starting at the center of the accent square and sewing to the edge, leaving most of the Now, sew D to the unit just made, using a regular, full-length seam, folding A out of the way. 4 Step : Assemble the Quilt Referring to the Unit & Quilt Assembly diagram on page, sew the units together in rows, then sew the rows together. Place a pin at the top of the quilt. (Quilt measures " x ½".) Step : Make & Add the Borders Sew the border rectangles and " accent strips together as shown below. Press the seam allowances toward the rectangles. Top & Bottom Borders - Make two. B A A C Step 9: Quilt & Bind Remove the paper foundations. Layer the project as follows: backing (wrong side up), batting, quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together. Quilt as desired. When the quilting is completed, trim the backing and batting even with the edges of the quilt top. Bind the quilt using the reserved strips and your favorite method. Left & Right Borders - Make two. D A A A E With your quilt on a design surface, place the borders around the quilt, orienting them as shown below. (Make sure the pin in your quilt is at the top!) When the borders are in the correct positions, the accent strips in each border will line up with an accent strip in the quilt top. Pin, then sew the side borders to the quilt, butting the accent strip seams together and easing in any fullness as required. (If you have pressed the seams as instructed, the accent strip seams should nest together.) Lastly, pin and sew the top and bottom borders to the quilt in the same fashion.
