1 Project Title: Funky Fleece Year Group: 8 Length in weeks: 7-8 Kingsdale School Technology FACULTY Scheme of Work Lesson / Week Objectives, Key Skills and Key Words Activity Notes and Resources To be able to research a chosen theme independently. To explore the brief in the context of designing for a particular market. To learn how to produce a machine appliqué sample. Recap from Y7 Textiles Pupils to write down 5 new things they learnt last year in Textiles and share with class. Include H&S rules! Brief Introduce brief to class with group discussion to gain understanding and show 3 basic hat styles. Design a funky fleece hat for a teenager to wear this winter. The hat must include some coloured fleece appliqué decoration and must be suitable for large scale production. Differentiation More able student will be given the option of using the more complex patterns/shapes. Lower ability should be given basic hat shape to use. Mindmap Produce a mindmap about their target group to understand what they might want from a hat: ages, colour options, when they d wear it, theme ideas, how much they would pay. Applique Sample Dem machine appliqué and then pupils to produce own sample using pre cut squares. For some this will be a recap from last year. May want to just tack in position and machine later in project when recap on machines. 1. Produce a moodboard on chosen theme; add comments on like/dislikes for higher ability. 2. 2 To show an ability to be able to communicate their ideas and present their work effectively. To be able to write their own specification. To be able to interpret their research to create 4 design ideas which answer the specification points. To be able to develop their ideas to produce a final proposal. Collect in homework at end of lesson Specification Produce a design specification for their hat. Initial Ideas Using basic head templates, pupils to come up with 4 design ideas showing influence from their chosen theme in terms of colour and appliqué decoration. Differentiation Evaluate their ideas and design which to develop, write reasons for their choice on the design sheet. Final Design Produce a final design with annotation and small fabric samples of fleece colours to be used. Collect a fabric order from each pupil. Recap on quality designs and discuss work as class around table. Finish any design work with colour, annotation. To learn how to use a pattern. What do they understand about fibres, fabrics and where they come from? Quite brainstorm as a class about all the words, knowledge they have. Fleece Learning about fleece, where it comes from and how it is made: source/oil, environmental implications, synthetic materials, knitted construction, fabric properties and end uses. Pupils to fill out recycled fleece worksheet. Patterns Dem how to use basic pattern block. Pupils to pin their pattern onto fabric. Students to start cutting out basic hat pieces. Fill in the blanks worksheet about recycled fleece. Use the Internet to find out further information about recycled fleece to add to their fact sheets. 3 To be able to cut out safely. To learn how to create a pattern for appliqué. Recap on patterns and cutting out. Pupils to continue with cutting out of hat pieces. When this is completed demo how to make appliqué templates on squared paper. Pupils to start making appliqué templates. They can cut out interfacing and fleece for appliqué shapes. Extension More able students to use embellishment or embroidery to decorate their hats. In groups add comments to each others work as ways to improve on actual design using post-it notes. Catch up week. We are now half way, improve or complete any outstanding work so far. To apply their knowledge of hand, machine stitching safely and accurately Dem how to put the hats together. Pinning and tacking to make plain seams and hems. Pupils to start making and constructing their hats. Dem/recap safe and accurate use of sewing machines. Let pupils machine stitch their appliqué samples made in wk1 using zigzag stitch as practise. Continue with making hats and appliqué decoration. Make a decorative front cover for the Funky Fleece hat project. Discuss importance of quality during making and that adapting or changing designs is important so quality is achieved. Continue with making of hats. Spot dems where required. Discuss work completed so far around table in relation to quality control checks. Write up a list of all practical work completed so far and explain any problems they have encountered or changes they have had to make. 4 To recognise the importance of finishing off products in order to achieve a quality finish. Dem / Focus on neatening of seams using pinking shears for a quality finish. Pupils to continue with making to finish hats. Discuss importance of promoting a new product to give it a positive image. Promotional swing tags are part of this. Show examples of swing tags. Pupils to design their own as part of homework. Design a swing tag for their hat using card provided. Higher Abilities They can decorate and embellish hats with embroidery or beads/buttons/sequins. PRACTICAL Discuss swing tags and dem how to laminate and attach cord. Finishing off Pupils to finish off hats and swing tags and attach for finished product. Evaluation Pupils to complete evaluation of their products and work completed this project. Assessment Final assessment of all work to find out final levels.
