1 Year 8 Textiles At the end of this unit you will have an assessment. 50% = The quality of the Textiles cushion cover you have made 50% = The information you have learnt KNOWLEDGE BOOKLET You will be set homework every 2 weeks. Homework for the practical lesson is to bring Trappings that you can put into the grid pockets of your cushion Inside this booklet is the information to help you revise for the written tests and at the end of your assessment. When you need to complete your homework it will be published on the Show My Homework website. Please keep this booklet safe at home as you will need it to help you to revise for this and all future assessments in DT

2 Textiles rooms are potentially dangerous places. Therefore working safely to reduce the risk of injury to yourself and others is very important. Below are some rules that your teacher will explain to you before any practical work is carried out. It is really important that you understand, learn and follow these rules. General Safety Rules 1. Always listen carefully to the teacher and follow any instructions given immediately 2. Do not run in the textiles room, you could bump into another student and cause an accident 3. If you need help from a teacher, put your hand up. Shouting out to gain attention can cause an accident as it is a distraction. 4. On finding your seat in the classroom, make sure that all your bags are safely stored under your desk as they can be trip hazards. 5. Put your coat on the back of your chair. Sewing Machine Safety Rules 1. Before using a sewing machine, make sure that long hair is tied back and loose clothing tucked in. 2. Only use the sewing machine when your teacher has given you permission to do so and instructed you as to what you need to do person only to use a sewing machine at a time. 4. Make sure that you keep your fingers a safe distance away from the needle when using the sewing machine. 5. To make sure that the sewing machine will work correctly, ensure that it is correctly threaded before you begin sewing. 6. Switch off the sewing machine when you are threading the needle and when you have finished using it. 7. Concentrate on your own work at all times when using the sewing machine. 8. Do not talk to other students when you are using the sewing machine under any circumstances. 9. If you have a problem, stop and ask for help by raising your hand. Iron Safety Rules 1. Only use the iron when instructed to do so. 2. Make sure that you keep your fingers out of the way of the hot parts of the iron to reduce the risk of burns. 3. Concentrate at all times when using the iron. 4. Switch off the iron when you have finished using it.

4 The Sewing Machine You need to be able to spell correctly and identify the main parts of the sewing machine The Sewing Machine Pattern selector Balance Wheel Presser Foot Stitch Length Control Stitch Width Control Reverse Stitch Button Presser foot lifter Theory Homework s To identify the pieces of equipment and parts of the sewing machine and learn how to spell the names.

5 Threading a sewing machine In the practical lessons you will learn how to correctly thread a sewing machine. It is important that you remember how to do this and practice it so that you can aim to work more independently and so that your sewing machine will wok correctly Raise the take up lever to its highest position by turning the handwheel towards you. Raise the presser foot. Place the thread on the spool pin, with the thread coming from the back of the spool. 1. Pull the thread into the thread guide 2. While holding the thread near to the spool, draw the thread down into the tension area and then around the spring holder. 3. Firmly pull the thread up and through the takeup lever from left to right. 4. Then pull the thread down and slip it into the lower thread guide 5. Pull the thread and slip it into the needle bar thread guide on the left 6. Thread the needle from front to back You may want to cut the end of the thread with sharp scissors for easier needle threading.

6 The correct sequence when using the sewing machine for Satin stitch (Zig Zag) 1. Check the sewing machine is threaded correctly 2. Put onto the correct settings; satin stitch (Zig Zag) is pattern selector C, 1 on the length selector, 5 on the width selector 3. Lift up the presser foot, place material under the presser foot, lower presser foot. 4. Turn the balance wheel towards you so that the needle is in the material, giving you an exact starting position 5. Make sure that the slit on the presser foot is on top of the tailors chalk line 6. Switch on the machine 7. Press the foot pedal slowly and go forwards 8. Continue machining forwards, keeping material flat and straight 9. When finished Switch off the machine 10. When finished lift up the needle by turning the balance wheel towards you. Lift up the presser foot, take out the material, cut the thread with the thread cutter on the side of the machine or with a pair of scissors Learn this information and the correct order for your test

Explain the function of the balance wheel. What is the setting for satin stitch or Zig zag stitch on the sewing machine? Explain how you would turn an accurate corner using the sewing machine Explain how you would prepare the fabric to sew accurate grid lines What is interfacing, why is it used and how is it attached to fabric? Practise identifying and correctly spelling the equipment you have used in Textiles Practise labelling how to thread a sewing machine Explain what CAD means What is tacking and why is a double stitch used at the beginning and end? Revise the correct sequence for using the sewing machine for satin stitch.

8 Revision Your final assessment will be based on the work you have completed in class and information from this booklet. You need to revise all of the topics you have covered in this booklet. Use the practise questions to help you. Remember to test yourself and make sure that you can spell and identify the key words.
