May Program From Camels to Contemporary Creations an Exploration of Ply-Split Braiding with Julie Hedges We are happy to have Julie Hedges here to discuss her research on the colorful textiles and camel trappings from Rajasthan and Gujarat, North West India and the relationship between these and her developments in the ply-split braiding technique. She will bring a range of slides from her study visits to India and show her collection of animal-related Indian Textiles Regalia as well as her own ply-split braids and sculptures. Julie Hedges Braiding Julie is a graduate of Liverpool Art School, where she specialized in woven textile design. In 1989 she attended a workshop on Ply-Split Braiding taught by Peter Collingwood. Since then, she has been traveling, researching and developing the technique to make wearable and sculptural pieces in a variety of yarns. Basket by Julie Hedges PPWG President s Notes May newsletter Hello Weavers, Spinners and Dyers, We have had a great year with exceptional programs and workshops. Our last meeting for the year is coming up in May. There is going to be a lot happening. Don't forget to buy your raffle tickets at the meeting for the Library raffle. And there is still time to donate an item for the raffle. We will also be accepting items for the Intermountain Weavers Conference raffle basket that our guild is donating. I want to thank the nominating committee - Linda Lugenbill, Sandy Hutton and Chris Race - for all of their hard work. I look forward to the May luncheon which is a great time to visit with guild members. And last but not least I am sure everyone is looking forward to the summer exhibit "Woven Together: Firestorm" which Susan and Bev have done an exceptional and professional job with. Thank you two and also thank you Sandy for your work on the exhibit! Anne Evans At right are some of the items in the upcoming Library raffle! 2
MAY WEAVING SAMPLE BY Emily Jones STRUCTURE: 3/3 point twill sequence giving stripes of diamondlike shapes WARP: 16/2 cotton, charcoal WEFT: 3/2 pearl cotton, colors: Jade and Spice TABBY: 16/2 cotton, charcoal SET/REED: 24 epi in a 12 dent reed THREADS: 24 ends = one repeat, total repeat =486 ends SOURCE: MULTIPLE TABBY WEAVES based on Bateman s manuscript edited by VIRGINIA HAR- VEY I am a member of the FOOTHILLS GUILD and our study for 2013 was any Bateman weave structure with any color harmony combination. The weave structure I used was a six-harness block weave developed from tabbies, draft My complimentary colors were Jade and Spice using the color of charcoal which seemed to tone down the colors in the weft. This was my first time to weave from any of Bateman s Manuscripts and I found it interesting and fun. In planning my warp I used 16/2 cotton in the warp and weft tabbies and 2 threads of various 3/2 pearl cotton colors in the weft to give a distinction of the horizontal diamond shapes, which was every 26 th and 27 th pick excluding the tabby picks. The contrast of 16/2 cotton with 3/2 cotton gives a 3D or raised appearance in the samples and towels. I finished the towels using a warm water wash and a cold water rinse in the washing machine and drying them in the dryer. If I were to do this draft again the warp would still be the 16/2 cotton but I would add a 3/2 cotton in contrasting colors in the warp at the blocks to give the appearance of a vertical diamond shape. 3
Woven Together: Firestorm As was reported at the March guild mee ng, PPWG was successful in ge ng a large number of very high quality entries into Woven Together: Firestorm. A er correc ng an entrant s submission error, the final number of entries is 88 which is enough to be both financial successful and have a wonderful exhibit. So, what happens next? The entry images have been renamed to be anonymous and along with per nent informa on such as materials, techniques, size and inspira on source, have been delivered to our Juror, Jeanne Steiner. Jeanne will be using a score sheet that she has used for jurying for many years and has the unenviable job of choosing the pieces that will be accepted. A wide variety of types of work was submi ed including wall art, clothing/accessories, sculptural pieces and func onal items such as rugs. As you know, every gallery has a limit on what can be displayed. The curators looked at the types and sizes of work submi ed and how it would be best displayed before providing a guideline to Jeanne for the number of entries that can be accepted, with the juror s focus being on making a cohesive high quality exhibit. The next large task will be mailing out the juror no fica ons a er her decisions are made. Shortly a er that, our graphic designer and web master, Jane Rock will begin working on the brochure that guild members approved at the last mee ng. Don t forget to save the date for the opening recep on: Friday June 21, 2013, 6:00 8:30 PM at the Business of Art Center! Program Notes by Edna Devai I am sending a big thank you to everyone who helped organize, warped demo looms and participated in the Judy Steinkoenig program and workshop. We all had a great time and learned from Judy s explanations and demonstrations efficiently in the short time mini workshops typically offer. After the May Guild meeting, we will be gathering for lunch at the Margarita at Pine Creek to celebrate the conclusion of a successful guild year. If you were not at the April meeting and still would like to sign up please send me an at edna_joseph_devai@msn.com or call at The restaurant s address is 7350 Pine Creek Rd. Colorado Springs, CO Ph For the menu and history of the restaurant please go to their WEB site at For directions click here: Espanola Valley Fiber Arts Center, Heather Hubbard On a recent visit to northern New Mexico, I was able to visit Espanola Valley Fiber Arts Center ( ). What a wonderful space they have in the old town area that accommodates many many looms, retail space, and workshop space! Among other activities they have joined with churro shepherds trying to find jobs for their sheep. They decided loom controlled patterned blankets woven on AVL dobby looms would be an economical product compared to the traditional tapestry blankets of the area. They have pictures on their web site ( ) and links to locations selling them. 4
Vice President s Notes by Leslie Parker Supplementary Warp Workshop Judy Steinkoenig taught an afternoon workshop on Supplementary Warp, a one shuttle weave structure with both a ground warp and a supplementary warp, which creates a striking design. Five demonstration looms were set up for the 18 participants to see various designs and fibers used in this structure. April Program by Judy Steinkoenig Ever heard of these yarns? Chiten (crab shells and shrimp blend for socks), either silk or wool wrapped stainless steel, conductive threads (for fingertips of gloves to use on small keypads, or a reflective (as in people can see you in the dark) yarn? They are all new on the market. At the April program, Judy Steinkoenig of Boulder s Shuttles, Spindles and Skeins store took us through the explosion of yarns over the past few decades. From the few yarns weavers had to choose from just a few decades ago: such as Lily cottons, Maypole wools, Mayville carpet warp, and linens to the many yarns available today, Judy passed around samples of yarns along with woven and knitted samples of the yarn. Today we have MORE fibers, MORE colors, MORE weights, MORE handdyed yarns, MORE blends and MORE everything. Cottolin, silk, tencel, bamboo, soysilk, hemp and others have all added to the variety we can work with today. And now many new blends are available: wool and soybean, silk and wool, blends combining cashmere, camel, alpaca, and merino wool, yak blends, silk and alpaca blends. Beads and sparkles now come in yarn itself. Wools can come with patterning right in the yarns. It was all very interesting to learn about, see and touch and be glad for today s choices. New Weavers Edna Devai We decided to con nue with the study group during the summer. Please see me at the May Guild mee ng to decide on a day and me that suits most everybody. Or send an e mail if you want to par cipate and be informed. We plan to meet at Montague s, 1019 S. Tejon St. The topic for the next mee ng is: Solving Problems, Correc ng Mistakes. Hospitality Please plan to come early to help set up and stay late to assist to clean up after the meeting. May 2013: Mary Madison, Sarah Richards 5

I W C 2013 A C O N F E R E N C E F O R F I B E R A R T I S T S Dear Fellow Fiber Enthusiasts, I have served on the IWC Board for six years (it s complicated, since I started out as the representa ve from Utah and it followed me to Colorado). It s me to re re, so the Intermountain Weavers Conference Board of Trustees is seeking interested candidates for open posi ons on the Board. Board members serve a four year term that includes two IWC Conferences and a endance at least one weekend Board mee ngs each year, usually in October and April at a loca on as convenient as possible for everyone. Other mee ngs are conducted via Skype or conference call. The Board meets also the day preceding and day following each Conference. IWC reimburses Board members for air or ground transporta on (whichever is less) and pays for housing and food during the mee ngs. Candidates for IWC Board membership are nominated by the current state representa ves and elected by the Board of Trustees. Eligibility requirements are membership in IWC ($20 biannual fee), a endance at a previous IWC Conference, basic computer skills and access to a computer and . A endance at the Conference immediately prior to coming onto the Board will meet the requirement of having a ended a previous IWC Conference. It is strongly encouraged that newly elected Board members a end the Conference directly preceding their taking office. Posi ons and responsibili es to be covered by Board members include: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Site (Conference loca on), Workshops, Commercial (IWC Market), Registra on, Fiber Celebrated (juried exhibit), Intermountain Crea ons and Intermountain Spirit (non juried exhibits for members, board members and workshop leaders), Newsle er, Publicity, Fashion Show, Publica ons and Website. IWC awards each re ring Board member a cer ficate of apprecia on that provides for a reduc on in fees for an IWC Conference following his or her term of service. Less tangible but more long las ng benefits of serving as an IWC Board member are the interstate friendships formed and the new skills acquired in the process of pu ng together a conference, and it is fun! If you would like to be nominated to represent Colorado, please contact me for an applica on form. Thank you for your interest in IWC. Sincerely, Margaret Jaeger margaretjaeger@q.com 10
