April Program Presented by: Carol Wilkinson Guatemalan Women and Their Weaving Carol Wilkinson, a member of PPWG for many years and a long-time weaver, developed an admiration for Guatemalan weaving from her first trip to Guatemala several years ago. On her last trip, she was able to photograph a natural dyeing demonstration and several weavers at work. Guatemalan women weave some of the most colorful clothing in the world and they weave it on a 2-harness backstrap loom usually no wider than 18 inches. They truly have a hands-on technique of weaving. Guatemalan women also dye much of their yarn from several natural sources. Get inspired with a wide array of color combinations and cloth on display at the program. Bring your checkbook to shop at the Guatemalan Market. Several Guatemalan pieces will be for sale after the program. Shows To See April 26-August 17: Beyond Bedspreads American Heritage through Historical and Contemporary Weavings, an exhibit of historical handwoven coverlets shown side by side with modern interpretations woven by members of the Pikes Peak Weavers Guild. Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, 215 South Tejon Street, Colorado Springs, CO (719) or June 14-July 26, opening reception June 13, 5-8PM: Living with Beauty: Handwoven Textiles for the Home, an exhibit juried by Betsy Blumenthal with handwoven items for the home interior, including rugs, baskets, wall pieces, pillows, curtains, furniture and more. Business of Art Center, 513 Manitou Avenue, Manitou Springs. CO (719) or 2
April Weaving Sample By: Jan Seltman 8 Shaft Plaited Twill Several years ago I began a project to make placemats and napkins for my daughter and her husband. I took a design I had done while studying Bonnie Inouye's book, Exploring Multishaft Design with the <4 Study Group. It is always interesting to weave up things that you have designed on the computer and have never seen woven---there is an element of surprise in each of them. Sometimes the design is exactly what you expected, sometimes part of the design is lost, and sometimes it's much better than anticipated. This was one of those projects that was much better than I had thought it would be because of the unexpected texture that was produced. I just couldn't make napkins out of it, so it became a nice vest. The warp was a space dyed 8/2 unmercerized cotton from WEBS, and the weft was a grey 8/2 unmercerized cotton also from WEBS. Most of the texture appeared after the fabric was washed. Special thanks to Sandra Hutton for scanning the monthly samples for the newsletter. 3
Reports and News Living with Beauty: Handwoven Textiles for the Home It s hard to believe that this juried exhibit was undertaken almost 2 years ago! Another major activity was completed when the juror notification letters went into the mail on March 18 th. You have probably already heard how excited we were to have 88 entrants from across the U.S. and in Canada and Australia submit 166 entries. The number of entries that could be exhibited was determined by the Business of Art Center s curator (who will hang the show) and our exhibit s juror, Betsy Blumenthal. Every gallery has a limit on the number of pieces that can be exhibited and Betsy had the difficult job of selecting just 53 pieces for display. The work selected very closely mirrors the proportions of entries that were received in functional (62%) and decorative (38%) categories. Pieces were accepted for exhibit from weavers in 21 states and Australia. Not surprisingly, the Pikes Peak Weavers Guild was very well represented in both the entries and the acceptances for this exhibit, and for this the entire guild can be very proud. There are still details to be worked over the next few months, and we are really looking forward to the sureto-be-spectacular opening reception on Friday June 13 th, where Betsy will announce the award winners! Your Co-Chairs, Beverly Weaver and Susan Bowman PPWG April Library News By: Beverly Weaver PPWG Library News April, 2008 This is a reminder that books, magazines, patterns, etc. are checked out of the PPWG library for one month (or for the summer, if the item is checked out at the May meeting). If you decide that you want to keep the item for an additional month, please contact the librarian. If no one is waiting for the item, there will be no problem extending the length of time that you may keep it. Keep reading, but don t forget to find time to weave! The main reason for this procedure is to notify the librarian that you know that you have the book and that you intend to return it in the future. If PPWG items remain in our homes for too long, we may forget that we have them or they may get lost among our personal books. 4
Guild Business March Minutes & Committee Reports March 14, 2008 Submitted by Susan Bowman, Recording Secretary Board Meeting President Linda Shaffer called the board meeting to order at 8:45 am. Present were Barb Byerly, Edna Devai-Alth, Susan Bowman, Doreen McLaughlin and W.W. Walker. January and February 2008 Board Meeting Minutes were approved. Edna discussed Carol s conflict with having jury duty on the day that she would be giving the April program to PPWG. Edna committed that the program committee will find a replacement. She will also collect an approximate headcount for the May luncheon at The Margarita at Pine Creek. Doreen discussed the 4 guild tables for Colorado Weavers Day and mentioned the correction to the address where registrations are being sent. Susan updated the board on Living with Beauty and volunteered a spinning wheel for the guild s display at the Pioneers Museum. The board agreed that any unclaimed weaving samples should be mailed to members. Linda committed to buy library notebooks for the weaving samples and to contact Beth about whether all the volunteer slots have been filled for the demonstrations at the BAC and the Pioneers Museum. Linda adjourned the meeting at 9:15 am. Regular Meeting President Linda Shaffer called the meeting to order at 9:30 am. The meeting minutes from February 2008 were approved. Several members received kudos for exhibits, studio tours, and articles written. Barb Byerly reported the financial information, published separately in the newsletter. The guild approved allocating money to the Colorado State Fair Awards, as has been done in the past. Edna Devai-Alth circulated a sign up sheet for the May luncheon at The Margarita at Pine Creek and discussed the need to change speakers for the April meeting. Beverly Weaver reported that Jane Rock donated two books to the guild library. W.W. Walker reported on a very successful workshop with Betsy Blumenthal, and everyone thanked Doreen McLaughlin and Sandy Hutton for setting up their computerized looms for the workshop. Linda Shaffer is collecting names for the Delegate Dinner the night before Colorado Weavers Day. Doreen McLaughlin is coordinating the 4 guild tables for Colorado Weavers Day and asked that everyone bring their pieces for the guild exhibit in April. Linda Shaffer announced that unclaimed weaving samples will be mailed to members. Judi Arndt announced that the Friday night opening at the Pioneers Museum (April 25) is by invitation only. Kathleen Orr and Jan Seltman (Nominating Committee), said that all open positions have nominees, except for Library, Advertising, and Membership. Susan Bowman updated everyone that 32% of the Living with Beauty entries were accepted, and the exhibit will have 62% functional pieces and 38% decorative, which closely mirrors the proportions of entries received in those categories. Accepted entries are coming from 21 states and Australia. The meeting was adjourned at 10:20 am for lots of show & tell before library time and Betsy Blumenthal s presentation on Twills. 6 Ancient Textiles Rare Ancestral Puebloan Blanket By: Louise Connor As a member of the Colorado Archeological Society, I recently read about (in the CAS Surveyor, Winter 2008) an ancient woven blanket from Ancestral Puebloan times. (The term Ancestral Puebloan is used these days instead of Anasazi). The Telluride Historical Museum has a rare 800-year-old Ancestral Puebloan textile blanket. Discovered 100 years ago in a remote cave in southeastern Utah, the blanket is a new exhibit at the museum. According to Janne Brako, interim director of the Center of Southwest Studies and curator of collections at Fort Lewis College, the blanket is the only known intact, dyed blanket (other blankets from the ancients are fragments). floor. A long string of polished beads and a bone awl were enclosed in the blanket. It measures approximately 5 feet square with rust, brown and white yarns woven in a twill pattern which hints at ceremonial use rather than everyday wear. The Telluride Historical Museum is in the process of developing a formal management plan, research design, fundraising and grant proposals for the scientific analysis and dating of the blanket. To find out more about visiting the blanket or making donations, contact the museum at or info@telluridemuseum.org or The blanket was found rolled up inside a large olla-type pot, plugged with a large skein of cotton yarn and buried in a cave 6

Spinning Sample By: Heidi Bates The sample is a 3-ply wool yarn (using Navajo plying). It was one of my first projects after I got past the bulky stage of spinning. The roving started out as space dyed, which produced a striped yarn. I have triple plied (making a rope) this yarn together and have made a wrist distaff with it.
