1 Peek-a-Boo Bunting Tutorial By Nova Flitter

2 This tutorial explains how I made the basic block for the peek-a-boo bunting. However, I should just point out that it s not a tute on how to make a cushion or a wall hanging or how to quilt - you can let your imagination run wild with that! I ll be showing you how to make a block for a cushion but I have provided the template for the wall hanging size flag too. You can decide which size you would like to make and turn your peek- a-boo bunting block into whatever project you choose, be it a cushion, a wall hanging, a play mat... To make an 18 block for a cushion front you will need: Scraps of fabric to fussy cut for the flag fronts Scraps of fabric for the underneath side of the flag 14 ½ square of solid background fabric Small fussy cut pieces for peek-a-boo surprises Scraps of Vliesofix/Steam a Seam/Bondaweb or similar Approx 1 yd of 1 bias binding Template plastic Permanent marker pen More scraps for a scrappy boarder :) Use a ¼ seam unless otherwise stated.

Begin by cutting out your flag template. You don t have to use template plastic, but it helps to be able to see through it when you are fussy cutting the flag fronts.

Place your template onto your fabric. Draw around and cut out. Cut out a total of 6 flag fronts & 6 flag backs. Pair up the fronts and backs and decide on your layout. Place the flag front and flag back right sides together and sew along the 2 long sides, pivoting at the point and leaving the top edge open. Back stitch at the beginning and end.

4 Clip the pointy end & turn flag right side out. Press and trim the pointy bits off of the top edge Top stitch along the 2 long sides pivoting at the pointy end.

Once you have all your flags turned right side out and top stitched, arrange them on your 14 ½ background fabric and pin in position. Iron your bias binding in half length ways and open out.

Position & pin the bias binding across the row of flags, tucking it under each flag. Align the flag edge with the centre seam. Allow for a small overhang of bias binding, approx ½- 1 either side of the block, you can trim it later.

Keeping close to the edge, sew along one seam and then sew along the other seam.

6 Keep the top half of the binding pinned out of the way & sew along the bias binding a ¼ from the centre fold. Unpin the top half of the binding and fold it back over on itself & re-pin in position. Your flags have now been triple stitched in position which should make it nice and strong to withstand lots of lifting and peeking.

Machine appliqué in place. Remove pins from flags and press.

7 Pin the flags up & out of the way. Choose some fun fussy cuts to hide underneath your flags. Use Vliesofix or preferred iron on sticky paper & iron in position, making sure no parts peek out when the flag is in place. Machine appliqué in place. Remove pins from flags and press. Trim any excess bias binding to neaten the edge Add a scrappy border, I made mine 2 ½ wide so I had a finished block of 18, perfect for a cushion :) Baste & quilt as desired. I hand quilted with various coloured floss using 2 strands. I marked random wavy lines with a hera marker to follow.

8 I have included the template I used to make the flags for the wall hanging. The finished wall hanging size I made was 28 x 37.

9 The method to make the wall hanging was exactly the same as I have described here except I added a layer of cotton batting between the layers in the flag. Position fabrics in the order as shown in diagram below and sew as you would for the cushion size. Before turning right side out, trim away the batting from the seam allowance close to but not right up to the seam line. This helps to eliminate some of the bulk. batting Top fabric, right side up Underneath fabric, right side down
