1 This is a SAMPLE of what the completed Flying Geese graphic organizer could look like. The sentences will vary vastly and may not be as wordy as these. Several thoughts were included for sampling purposes. For Social Studies, students need to show an understanding that quilts and/or quilt blocks: Are works of art Are examples of conservation of resources Were traded for other goods to meet other needs For Math, students need to show an understanding of Symmetry Shapes within a shape Identify the pattern type (patchwork repeating, patchwork rotational, appliqué, etc.) Social Studies (PINK TRIANGLES) Math (ORANGE TRIANGLES) Tiny pieces of fabric made this quilt. They are scraps. Some are different than others. They are made into triangles and squares. Little pieces sewed together make a big quilt. This quilt is a rectangle. I see squares and triangles sewed together to make the big rectangle. Some squares are made from four triangles and a smaller square. The triangles and squares are made into a design. They make a pretty pattern. They make designs with the shapes and colors. The quilt design is not symmetrical. I can fold the quilt in the middle but the design is not the same on both sides. Each square is symmetrical. Fold it in half and there are three triangles the same shape and color. The color of the squares is not symmetrical. People could keep the quilt to stay warm. They could trade it for money so they could buy other things they needed. This is a repeating pattern. All the medium sized squares are made from the same four triangles and one smaller square. 3 My Quilt Report Sample This is a SAMPLE of what type of ideas you will get from the students, what you MIGHT record on the triangles, and the kind of paragraphs you and students MIGHT come up with when the ideas are taken from the graphic organizer and made into paragraph form. Students will write simplistically. On a second grade level, their writing/ideas must show they know/understand: Social Studies Concepts: Quilts are works of art People conserved resources Trade was a way of meeting their needs Math Concepts: Shapes within shapes Describes symmetry Recognize patterns in the real world The first quilts were made long ago. People made quilts from tiny scraps of fabric. They saved all the little pieces they could. They made the small pieces into shapes. They sewed the triangles and squares together to make a big quilt. Making quilts is a work of art. People made designs with shapes and colors. They made beautiful patterns. It is like art. Sometimes they made the quilts to keep warm. Sometimes they would trade or sell the quilt. They could get other things they needed by selling or trading a quilt. To make a quilt you have to know geometry. You have to know how to put shapes together to make other shapes. In this quilt four triangles were joined at the tips to make a square in the center. That makes a medium size square. Then sew the medium squares all together to make a big rectangle quilt. The medium squares are symmetrical. If you fold it in half both halves will be the same. It is like putting a mirror in the middle. This pattern is a repeating pattern. Each medium square is made the same way over and over. Lesson 34, Flying Geese, Page 3
