2 I designed this block as part of the 2019 Aurifil Designer Block of the Month programme. I live in McLaren Vale, South Australia which is a world renown wine region and a place of extraordinary beauty. The rolling hills of vineyards by the sea are surrounded by farmland growing fruits and all sorts of crops, and is referred to as the food bowl of Australia. This block represents the abundant produce of the region and harvest time which takes place around March / April. RST = right sides together HST = half square triangle All seams are ¼ unless instructed otherwise Press seams in the direction shown by arrows unless directed otherwise Read all instructions before starting MATERIALS I used fabrics from my Summer Blush collection for Riley Blake Designs in my block. 3 red/coral print fat quarters in graduated shades (light - medium - dark) 1 fat quarter low volume print cotton 1 fat quarter white cotton Aurifil 50wt thread CUTTING From the white cotton cut: (3) 2 x 3½ rectangles (1) 3½ x 6½ rectangle (1) 3½ square (4) 1¼ x 12½ strips From the low volume print cut: (3) 2 squares (15) 2½ squares From the light red print cut: (3) 2½ squares From the medium red print cut: (5) 2½ squares From the dark red print cut: (7) 2½ squares PAGE 1 OF 4

3 column 1 column 2 column 3 ASSEMBLY Refer to the diagram above to see the three columns we will construct in this quilt block, consisting of half square triangles (HSTs) and flying geese units. 1. Make the HSTs. We will make the HSTs using the traditional method which minimizes waste. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of the low volume 2½ squares. Pair these up with the 2½ red print squares in all three shades, placing them RST. Sew 1/4 away from the drawn line on both sides. Cut along the traced line, fold the units open and press the seam towards the darker fabric. Trim each HST down to 2 square. Repeat until you have 30 HSTs that measure 2 square each. PAGE 2 OF 4

4 2. Make the flying geese. Each column contains one flying geese unit. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of the 2 squares (all four prints). To make the flying geese for column 1, take a white 2 x 3½ rectangle and place a low volume 2 square on the left side, RST and the traced diagonal line as shown. Stitch along the traced line. Trim excess fabric ¼ away from the seam, fold open, press towards the triangle. Place a light red 2 square on the right side, stitch along the traced line, trim excess fabric, press open. The flying geese unit should measure 2 x 3½. Repeat the same process to make the flying geese units for columns 2 and 3 as well. column 1 column 2 column 3 3. Assemble column 1. Lay out the flying geese and HSTs for column 1. Sew the two HSTs in each row together, press seam open. Sew the rows together, then sew the white 3½ x 6½ rectangle to the top of the column. column 1 PAGE 3 OF 4

4. Assemble columns 2 and 3. In the same manner as column 1, sew the HSTs and flying geese in each column together, pressing all seams open. Sew the 3½ square of white to the top of column 2. 5.

5 4. Assemble columns 2 and 3. In the same manner as column 1, sew the HSTs and flying geese in each column together, pressing all seams open. Sew the 3½ square of white to the top of column Sew the 1¼ x 12½ strips between the columns and to the left and right of the block. Press seams open.
