Vol. XXX No.5 The Newsletter of Faithful Circle Quilters January 2012 FCQ Officers President Jane Scott Thursday Vice President Margaret Minton Secretary Margo Cramer Treasurer Leigh Eirich Monday Vice President Nancy Evans Secretary Mitsn Mitchell Treasurer Anne Kelly PRESIDENT S MESSAGE From Jane Scott HAPPY NEW YEAR! Little did we know when we started 2011 that we would spend the majority of the year in EXILE from Lyle Buck Hall. Nevertheless, you hung in there and perhaps made a few new friends in our tight-knit quarters. The work, or should I say play, of the guild continued and we were able to donate over 140 stockings to the church for their Christmas Outreach program and an amazing number of Love Quilts, including an additional 57 donated just in December. We again supported the Komen Race for the Cure with 16 Raffle Quilts. Our Home Schooling approach to Education has been very successful, and has provided a number of excellent member demonstrations, with more to come. Even the June Retreat will feature some of our home grown teachers. You have also been a great comfort and aid to our members who have lost family members and have struggled with major health problems. We are so much more than a quilting group. If you have taken a sabbatical from FCQ, we hope you will join us for a Celebration we are calling, BACK TO BUCK with a luncheon on Thursday, January 26 and a dinner on Monday, January 30. This will be our first chance to be back in Lyle Buck Hall. On the schedule for the new year is, of course, the 2012 Quilt Show! Preparations are gearing up with lots of opportunities for you to volunteer. Be sure to read carefully all the information in this newsletter. Our Raffle Quilt has been getting rave reviews!

And finally, your Board has made a decision to pursue setting up a brand new website for FCQ that will better reflect our current projects and give up-to-date information to our members and also to perspective members. In this day and age, the web is where people go to make connections and get information, and we want the website to be reflective of the fun group we are and the beautiful quilts we make. We want it to feature lots of pictures to showcase our accomplishments, as well as opportunities to add to your knowledge of quilting. A small committee has been formed to investigate options for a new website, but most of us have more enthusiasm than technical knowledge, so we desperately need advice from others with experience in website construction, software packages, content suggestions, etc. Please give me a call or an if you have anything to share with the committee. You all know that you get out of a group what you put into it, so make a resolution to be more involved in FCQ this year, and I promise you will be well rewarded. Ask yourself, What can I share with my FCQ friends? LOVE QUILTS From Maria O Haver Completed Love Quilts have been donated to various local organizations in December. Grassroots, Domestic Violence Center, House Advocacy and Christian Services received a total of 18 large quilts and 39 small quilts. Thanks to everyone for continuing to work on these much appreciated quilts despite the confined meeting space. WHITE T-SHIRT COLLECTION From Georgia Morris Many, many thanks to everyone who found time to shop, purchase and donate a package of white t-shirts for children (with ruined shirts) in the Emergency Room of Howard County General Hospital. We collected 83 shirts!! Thank you for your kind generosity. EDUCATION NEWS From Carol Roberts Vera Hall: Due to the delay of our return to Lyle Buck hall, Vera has agreed to reschedule her lecture to Feb. 9. Her talk will cover the results of her research of African American footnotes in history and will introduce us to women such as Elizabeth Kekley, who was Mrs. Lincoln's seamstress. Vera has discovered that she was also a quilter! Her lecture will begin at 10:30. Home Schooling: Maria O'Haver will do quick demos on how to square up half square triangles on Thursday, Jan 5 and Monday, Jan 9. On January 19, Genie Corbin will be demonstrating the "tossed 4-patch. Demos will usually begin minutes before the business meeting,

PROJECT LINUS MYSTERY QUILT CHALLENGE From Stephanie Sanidas Congratulations to Genie Corbin for completing her Mystery Challenge Quilt for Project Linus! Have other quilters finished their challenge quilts? I hope we get to see Genie s quilt (and a few more) at our meetings in January Please bring your challenge quilt to Show and Tell in January. Even if your quilt is a work in progress, bring it to inspire others. The deadline for challenge quilts is April 2012, and yes, your challenge quilt can be entered in our upcoming quilt show. In May 2012, the challenge quilts will be delivered to Project Linus. Quilts can be tied, machine quilted or hand quilted. Contact Stephanie Sanidas for more information. BUS TRIPS From Sandy Lynch and Sheri Thompson The first trip of the year is to the AQS show in Lancaster, PA on March 16, The cost is $42, and checks are payable to MILLTOWN QUILTERS. The fee covers the transportation and admission to the show. We need 30 people paid by February 1. The other two trips are September 14 for the Pennsylvania Quilt Extravaganza and our favorite, the shopping trip, on October 12, Please see Sandy Lynch or Sheri Thompson to make your reservation. BLOCK OF THE MONTH From Sandy Reading Our Block of the Month is back with one that is perfectly themed for Jane s message this month and the time of year. 5 SILENT AUCTION From Sandy Schlossberg, Susan Mann, Sherrin Murray We are already receiving items for the Quilt Show 2012 Silent Auction. Use the forms included in the newsletter or get them at each meeting for the items you create. Thanks to the enthusiastic response from members at the last show, the guild was able to fund considerable educational opportunities. We look forward to seeing the delightful pieces you produce and will enjoy sharing them with you at the meetings. GRAPHICS From Nancy Meier And thanks go out to Debra Gabel for designing our WOW logo and Quilt Show poster. We will be looking for every member to help in putting our posters in attention-getting places. PEDDLERS' TABLE FORM From Anne Kelly For 2012, the Peddlers Lane will use the same Excel 2003 form for pre-registration as last time. Below are sample entries. If you have NO comfort with Excel you can provide the same info in a WORD document or on paper, or surprise yourself and copy this sample to your pc and start making entries. You'll be surprised at how easily you can do this. Once the sample is in Excel: if you have a 2003 version, click FORMAT, COLUMN, AUTOFIT; if you have a 2007 version, click <home>, CELLS, AUTOFIT. Hint: Use tabs and arrows to move to the next field or cell; the Enter key is used within a cell. Hint 2: the price field will only accept whole numbers; do not add $_.00 ; just leave the whole numbers. The first entry (0) should have your phone number and name. Use a pencil and ruler to draw a diagonal line on the top square. Stitch ¼ on each side of the drawn line. Rotary-cut each pair of squares apart on the drawn line. Press 4 towards black and 4 towards pink/red/valentine print (helps in matching seams). Square up to 3 ½. The picture below shows the placement of the black squares, pink/red/valentine print rectangles, and triangles. This is a simple blocks don t be afraid of the half square triangles.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY In general, when Howard County schools are closed for inclement weather, there will be no meeting. If Howard County scholls have a delayed opening, the day group does not meet. If Howard County schools close early, the evening group will not meet. If you would like to reaceive notification of meeting cancellations via , contact Patricia Lane at webbie@faithfulcirclequilters.com. TOP TIPS OF 2011 Found on The Quilt Show Blog ( and thanks to Alex Anderson and her cat, Sparrow: Parchment paper, intended for nonstick backing and cooking, does not have a silicone coating. It will not melt under an iron. Use parchment paper as a placement guide when building a fusible appliqué block. Take lots of photos for quilt inspiration. With digital cameras, there's no film or processing charge. Remember, if you are lucky, you get one good shot in a hundred. Have prints made of your best photographs, the ones you might want to use in the future, and put them in an album. Use different types of music for different stages of the quiltmaking process. Music with no lyrics works well for the design period; pleasing rhythms allow the right side of the brain (the creative side) to function. For the construction stage, use music with a beat that keeps you motivated. Using a single hole throat plate will go a long way to help improve stitch quality. The single hole helps guide the thread straight up and down as you move the fabric in all different directions. Don't lift your hands while the machine is still running. Let the machine stop before moving your hands to avoid off track stitches. An electric mustache trimmer to un-sew long seams. Runs fast, never nicks the fabric. Use your pressure foot on the machine to hold one side of the seam, and hold the other side in your left hand. Run the trimmer along the inside of the seam, and voila! Keep a record of your work in a file. The file should include notes on inspiration, technique, and the date you completed the piece. This will make it easy to fill out forms and answer requests when entering your work in shows or for publications.

2012 Quilt Show Registration Instructions It is very important to register your quilts as early as you can. This facilitates the show layout and determines how many quilts will be able to be displayed. This year, an entry can be registered before it is completely finished, but it must be sufficiently far along to be recognized as a quilt in an associated photo. Only finished quilts will be hung in the show. Registration Information Registration dates o Registration begins on January 9 o Registration ends on April 2; no registrations accepted after April 2 Registration forms can be downloaded from the FCQ website or picked up at weekly meetings. Website link: The registration form can be submitted one of two ways: 1. Complete, save to your PC, then as an attachment to FCQquilts@gmail.com 2. Complete, print, then submit in person to either Janette Tarr or Sheva Farkas at a weekly meeting Photographs must be submitted for each quilt registered. o Digital photos can be ed to FCQquilts@gmail.com o Digital photos can be taken at a weekly meeting. A quilt is not considered registered until both the form and the photograph are received. Quilt Submissions Each member may submit up to five (5) quilts. If you have more than one entry, number them in priority order on the registration form. The Hanging Committee will use this information in the event the number of entries should exceed available space. Group quilts will also be accepted as long as one participant is an FCQ member. Sleeves: Large and medium quilts must have 4-inch sleeves When you drop off your quilt on Setup Day, Wednesday, April 26, 2012, your quilt is assigned an ID number. The lower section of the registration form then becomes your receipt. After the show closes you (or the person you designate) must present the receipt to collect your quilt. Please include an artist s statement on your quilt, limited to 50 words or less. This is displayed with your quilt.
