1 Papillon A Wolhemel pattern by Angelique den Brok Molendijk Butterflies are often associated with Spring, but the one on this bag is inspired by the Blue Morpho butterfly with its deep blue colors. Together with the brown and the orange, this results in a warm autumnal palet. This versatile felted bag is strong enough to carry your laptop or groceries without losing its shape. It s also a great knitting bag, since straight needles won t pop out from the top. If you are going to use it as a laptop case, please add a lining; your computer will love you for keeping the tiny wool fibers out of the machinery. 2 MATERIALS Yarn: Garnstudio Drops Alaska, 100% pure wool; 75 m/82 yds per 50g 6 balls color 23 brown (main color) ½ ball color 12 marine blue (contrast color 1) ½ ball color 15 kobolt blue (contrast color 2) ½ ball color 52 petrol (contrast color 3) ¼ ball color 46 rust (contrast color 4) 1 set US #8/ 5mm straight needles Approx. 0.5 yards lining fabric Sewing thread and a sewing needle Sharp knife GAUGE Before felting: 17 sts/22 rows = 4" in stockinette stitch After felting: 20 sts/34 rows = 4" in stockinette stitch PATTERN NOTES The butterfly chart is knitted using the intarsia method. When working in this way, different sections of each row are worked with different colors. Use a separate length of yarn for each area of color. When switching from one color to the next, drop the color you have been knitting with, and bring the yarn for the next color up under the yarn of the previous color before you continue knitting. This will twist the 2 yarns around each other. It is very important to do this; if you do not wrap the yarns in this way, the areas of color will not be joined, and you will have holes in your work. I didn t use bobbins for the different colors, but let the loose threads hang behind the knitting. I find this the easiest way to untangle the yarn every now and then.

4 BO all stitches. FINISHING Using mattress stitch, sew sides of the bag together. Weave in ends. PATTERN Bag Using US #8/5mm straight needles and MC, CO 63 sts. Work in st st until piece measures 33 inch. Continue working the Butterfly Chart as follows: K6 with MC, work 51 sts of Butterfly Chart, K6 with MC Cont in patt as set until all rows of Butterfly Chart have been completed. Continue working in st st until piece measures 51 inches. Felting Place the bag in the washing machine and set your machine for a medium hot wash with a low water level. Add some detergent and let the machine do its work. Check regularly if the bag has reached the desired size. Drops Alaska is a yarn that felts really easily. When the desired size is reached, take the bag out of the machine and rinse it well. Squeeze out the excess water between towels. Lay the bag down flat to let it dry completely; this may take a few days! For the handles, slice an opening in both sides of the fabric with a sharp knife. The opening should be placed an inch from the top and in the center of the bag, and should be about 4 inches wide.

6 Lining Cut a piece of lining fabric with the following measurements: Width: Bag circumference + 1 inch Height: 2 x Bag height Note: your lining bag should be a little bigger than your felted bag in the beginning; your felted bag will always be a little stretchy. Fold the lining in half length-wise, with RSs together. Sew the sides together with a 0.3 inch seam. Fold half an inch of the fabric at the top of the lining bag to the outside. Place the lining bag in the bag with the sides together and sew the lining to the bag with small stitches; the edge of the lining should be half an inch below the handle opening.
