1 Pillow Party QuiltWorks II from Designer s Gallery offers so many opportunities that it s hard to stop creating pillow after pillow. After you have completed this pillow, you will want to make several more. I see a pillow party in the works. 2 Instructions: Design Creation: 1. With QuiltWorks II open, click on the Outline Wizard. 2. Click on Select Image. 3. Select Sashiko 1 in the Line Art folder listed under QuiltWorks on your computer. Tip: Under the category Files of Type, select Bitmap Images for all of the images to appear in the field. 4. Click on Open and then click on Next to proceed to the next field. 5. In the Image Transformation field, select Lineart Image under Image Type field. 6. In the Width field, enter in three inches. 7. Click on Next to continue. 8. Click Finish to send the digitized design to the workspace. 9. Determine the largest hoop size that your embroidery machine uses and click on View on the menu bar. Choose Select Hoop from the drop down window. Select the hoop size. (In the sample, the 160mm x 260mm hoop was used.) Place a checkmark next to Rotate 90. Click OK to apply. 3 10. To duplicate the design, left click on All Items under Sequence View to select all parts of the design. Right click on the workspace and choose Combine. This will group all the segments together and makes it easier to select the design as a whole. Select Repeat Design icon on the top toolbar. When the dialog box opens, click on the Up Arrow to increase the Number Across to 3. Designer s Gallery Project: Pillow Party Page 3 of 6

4 Click on Ok to accept the change. 11. With all areas selected, we will now resize the design and center the design in the hoop. Note: If you have a larger hoop set the size of the design a couple of millimeters smaller than the hoop. Right click on the design and choose Properties from the list of commands. Select the Transform tab. Type 159mm next to the Height field. Click on Apply. 12. Choose the Run tab to change the type of stitch. Under Type, click on the down arrow and choose the Bean stitch. Click on Apply. 13. The finished size will be approximately 241mm x 159mm. If it does not fit within the hoop, you will need to resize the design. 14. Click on the Save icon and select the format that your machine reads. 15. Click on the Print Preview icon and print the design at 100% size. The printout will be used as a template for placement of the design. Designer s Gallery Project: Pillow Party Page 4 of 6

5 Embroidery and Assembly: 1. Cut four 18 square pieces from the silk dupioni fabric to form the body of the pillow and the front flap. Tip: Cutting the pieces larger than the finished size will make it easier for determining the finished embroidered area that will be used. 2. Hoop the tear-away stabilizer. 3. Spray with temporary spray adhesive. 4. Place one 18 silk dupioni section to the top edge of the hoop. Finger press to secure the fabric to the hoop. 5. With the embroidery machine on, retrieve the design. 6. Embroider the design using the colored embroidery thread of choice. 7. Remove the fabric from the hoop and remove the stabilizer. 8. To achieve perfect placement, follow the next set of steps for each additional hooping for the pillow body. Keep in mind the finished size of the pillow: Take the printed template and position the template under the first embroidered design, being careful to match up the template design with the embroidered design. Pin in place. Hoop the tear-away stabilizer. Spray with temporary spray adhesive. Place the templated fabric over the hoop, being careful that the center cross hair points on the template are placed in the center of the hoop. Use the marks on the sides of the hoop as a reference point. Move the design so that the needle is positioned over the cross hair points on the template. Remove the template and embroider the design. Remove the fabric from the hoop and remove the stabilizer. 9. Repeat the Embroidery and Assembly directions for the flap of the pillow. Since the flap is only one-third the size of the body, you may need to re-hoop two times. The flap dimensions are 7 deep x 11 inches wide. 10. Trim the two flap sections to measure 8 x 12. Make sure that the embroidered area is centered on the flap. 11. With right sides together, sew the 2 flap pieces together with a ½ seam allowance. Follow the curve of the design to form the bottom edge of the flap. Leave the top edge open for turning. 12. Trim and clip the corners and turn right side out. 13. Trim the two pillow sections to measure 17 x Attach the pillow flap to the top edge of the embroidered body section. Baste in place. Designer s Gallery Project: Pillow Party Page 5 of 6

6 15. With right sides together, pin the front of the pillow to the back of the pillow. Using a ½ seam allowance, stitch the front to the back, leaving the top edge open for turning. 16. Insert the pillow form and slip stitch the opening closed. 17. Cover the button and sew the button to the bottom center flap.
