1 Hexagon Wall Hanging Templates play an important role in the final outcome of any project, regardless of the design or program you are working with. In this project, templates will be used to cut out the quilt pieces and center the designs to assure complete accuracy during embroidery. This quilt requires complete accuracy and is a great project for the advanced quilter. 2 CustomWorks by Designer s Gallery or Designer s Gallery Studio Plus (Installed). The project was written for use within CustomWorks, but Studio Plus will also work. Baby Lock designs from the Lace Collection Blec-75 Sewing and embroidery thread to match fabrics Baby Lock Tear-Away Soft Stabilizer Temporary spray adhesive General sewing & quilting supplies Quick Quilts Using Quick Bias by Gretchen K. Hudock (sold through Nancy s Notions) Refer to the referenced quilting book for supplies/materials Instructions: Cutting Directions: I used the Quick Quilts Using Quick Bias book by Gretchen K. Hudock as my guide for this project. I have provided the templates for your ease of use. I had a difficult time cutting out some of the shapes that are needed for the project, so I have provided them for you to use. If you prefer to create your own quilt templates, refer to the book for directions on Page 72 under the Woven Trellis project. Cut 7 sections using the hexagon shaped template that is attached at the end of the project notes. The embroidered designs will be placed on these sections. (In the sample, a tone-on-tone fabric was used as one of the 3 coordinating fabrics.) From each of the 2 coordinating fabrics and 1 of the print fabrics, cut 6 parallelograms and 3 trapezoids using the attached templates. For additional cutting directions, refer to the Quick Quilts Using Quick Bias book on page 73 for binding strips, inner border strips, and outer border strips. Embroidery: 1. Open CustomWorks by Designer s Gallery. 2. Click on Merge Design icon on the top toolbar. 3. Retrieve the design from the location where you installed them by opening the Look in Field. 3 The designs that will be used for the 7 hexagon sections area are as follows: Blec pes, pes, pes, pes, pes, pes, and pes. Double clicking on the first design will place the design on the workspace. 4. All of the designs that will be used will be the correct size, so there is no need to re-size. The only change to be made is re-coloring the segments with the same color. Select All Items under Sequence View. On the Color bar, select any color (green was used in the illustration). The color will automatically change all segments to the same color. Note: In the illustration below under Sequence View, the program Designer s Gallery Project: Hexagon Wall Hanging Page 3 of 6

4 automatically changed the color and applied the change by grouping all areas under the same color code. When we send the design to the embroidery machine, there will be no reason for the machine to stop. This will speed up the embroidery process since we will be using only one thread color. 5. In order to properly center the design in the hexagon sections, print out a template from the design at 100% of its size. Click on the Print Preview icon on the top toolbar. 6. Click on Settings icon located within the Print field. 7. Under the Print Settings field, place a checkmark next to Print Actual size and next to Remove Jump Stitches. With only these two choices selected, you will reduce the amount of ink used and the number of pages that will print. Click OK. 8. Click on Print from the Print field or Print Setup as shown in the above illustration. 9. Click on the Save icon. Give your design a name. Save the design in the.pes format and send to the media source that your machine will read. Designer s Gallery Project: Hexagon Wall Hanging Page 4 of 6

5 10. Repeat all the Embroidery Steps until all designs have been recolored, a template printed, and the designs re-saved with a different name. At the Embroidery Machine: 1. Cut out the first template and pin to the center of the hexagon section. Accuracy is important. 2. Using a 4mm x 4mm hoop or larger, hoop the Baby Lock Tear- Away Soft Stabilizer and spray with a temporary spray adhesive. 3. Place the hexagon section in the center of the hoop. Line the cross marks on the template using the side markings on the hoop as your guide. Finger press the fabric to the stabilizer. 4. Load the design into the embroidery machine. Move the design so that the cross marks on the template are aligned with the needle in the center position. 5. Remove the template from the fabric. 6. Embroider the design using thread that will coordinate with the fabric. 7. Repeat these steps until all designs are embroidered. Assembly: 1. Refer to the directions on pages in the Quick Quilts Using Quick Bias book for the assembly of the quilt top and for applying the bias tape to the top of the quilt. 2. To apply the binding, refer to page 24 in the Quick Quilts Using Quick Bias book.
