2 was inspired by my love of Autumn: hayrides, apple orchards, bonfires, Friday night football games at the local HS, farm foliage tours, and long walks in the crisp air. I wanted a shawl that would reflect my love of outdoor activities during the fall. Here in the North Eastern part of the United States, Autumn means bright, beautiful colors everywhere and weather that is warm one minute and crisp &cool the next. 2 P a g e

3 is a modified batwing shawl (triangular, top down construction). It s knit from the top, center down in garter stitch to enhance the unique texture of the Noro Silk Garden Sock Yarn. Then it is completed in a diagonal rib to add a very subtle texture change, as not to overpower the real star of this pattern, the yarn! (For those of you new to Noro it s an incredibly textured yarn with thin and thick areas, string, and fulled areas of the yarn. It s a self-striping yarn with very long color repeats.) To finish it off, I bound off the shawl in a double crochet BO (there are written and video links to 2 tutorials included) to give it an unobtrusive bit of texture at the end. (It also made for a nice, loose BO.) One could absolutely BO in the usual way without changing the look of the shawl. This shawl is completely customizable. Although I like the rustic feel and I designed it for that purpose, one could use a solid, more even yarn for a polished effect. If a crisper rib is desired, one could go down a needle size to achieve it. Also, the diagonal rib section can be repeated as many times as desired. Materials: Approximately 500 yds (457.2m) Sport Weight Yarn (Pictured in Noro Silk Garden Sock Yarn, Orange-Red-Pink-Green Colorway S84) US Size 9 (5.50mm), 24 (61cm) or longer, Circular Needles or needles needed to achieve gauge Stitch Markers Tapestry Needle Crochet hook US Size J (6mm) or 1 size larger than the size knitting needles used for this project Gauge: Not important but will determine how much yarn is needed. For this project, gauge is 16 st by 22 rows in garter stitch = 4 inches (10.2cm) WASHED & BLOCKED 3 P a g e

If this bind off seems too fiddly or scary, you can bind off in the usual way. Finishing: Soak in wool wash of choice (follow manufacturer s instructions for use) and pin & block.
