1 Quilters by the Sea Guild of Wilmington NQA Chapter 197 P.O. Box 955 Wilmington, NC Next Meeting: January 23, 2012 First Christian Church, 2035 Oleander Drive, Wilmington, NC Time: 7:00 PM JANUARY PROGRAM - Scrap Quilt Party with Augusta Cole AUGUSTA WILL BE SHARING HER SCRAP QUILTS -- BRING ONE OF YOURS TO SHARE TOO Do you have a quilt you ve made in one of Augusta s classes? Why not bring it for show and tell so she can see it! From the President s Scrap Bag During the recent cold weather, my quilt studio saw much more activity. Cold weather brings out the quilter in me. What gets your quilt engine going? January is a busy month for QBTS. Augusta Cole will be coming to give us new ways to use the scraps that we have been squirreling away. I am looking forward to her class. In addition, the retreat is at the end of January. We have an opening on the Board and some committee chairs. We need to get a new Assistant Treasurer. This important job needs to be filled as soon as possible. (The Assistant Treasurer shall assist the Treasurer and is responsible for sales of raffle quilt tickets.) In addition we need a Community Outreach Coordinator, as well as help with the monthly raffles. Contact me as soon as possible if you are interested in one of these positions. Happy Sewing Nancy Heck North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. We are scheduled to exhibit our quilts at the Aquarium from March 1 st through May 31 st. In order to make this happen, we will need to work quickly. The application form is on pages 2 & 3 of this newsletter, and I will have copies at the meeting. If you have a quilt of marine, nature or of a nautical theme and would like to be a part of this exhibit, that would be great, Fill out the paperwork, and turn it in to me. Please make sure that the quilt is properly labeled, has a sleeve on the back for hanging and that you have a picture ready to turn in with the quilt. Put it in a pillowcase, and I will make sure that it is delivered to the Aquarium. If you would like to sell it, you will need to list a price. If you do not have your quilt at the meeting. we will have to make a arrangements to get the quilt by February 15 th. I would love to have a small committee to help deliver the quilts in late February, as well as get them at the end of May. If you have any questions, please call or me at heck_nancy@yahoo.com Quilters by the Sea Guild of Wilmington 1

5 QBTS 30 th Annual Quilt Show 2012 We hope the holidays were good to you and your families!! It seems like they came quick, and were over even quicker! Did you get lots of new quilting toys, patterns, and fabrics? Maybe something that might inspire a new quilt or two for the Quilt Show? We hope so and are looking forward to seeing them. Or maybe you upgraded some equipment, but the old equipment would be great for beginners? Don t forget about the Resale Booth. Or maybe you did some new crafts and would like to sell that surplus? That is what the Boutique is all about. Or did you learn something new that would be good to share at the Skill Demonstrations at the Show? Keep all these things in mind as you go through your spring cleaning as well. You might be surprised what you come up with!! Just to remind you this year the Quilt Show will be open to the public all day Friday and Saturday, June 23 and 24, Thursday night we will have a private reception for the Quilt Show entrants and their guests and our members. We will again have the Quilt Show at the Baptist Activity Center in Wilmington. So please hold these dates, and remember to sign up for the activities that occur prior to the show, as well as during the show. It takes a lot of hands to make this work go fast!! We will have the sign-up sheets for volunteering at the Guild meeting later in the spring. We are still in need of volunteers to head up Hospitality, Transportation, and Signage. If you can help in any of these areas, please let us know. The Quilt Show Committee will begin our regular monthly meetings in January 5:30 p.m. at the church prior to the regular Guild Meeting. Thanks much, Dianne Putnam and Cynthia Helms Thoughts About Challenge Quilt 2012 In honor of the thirtieth anniversary of Quilters by the Sea Guild, the theme for 2012 is PEARL What is a pearl? Where do you go from there? Is it an object? Is it a picture? Is it quilt block? Go where your imagination takes you when you close your eyes and think pearl to yourself. There are no fabrics or specific colors with this challenge. You are free and challenged to create a quilt with only that one word to guide you: PEARL 1. Size: 100 or less in perimeter (measurement around the outside) 2. May be any shape (square, round, triangle, rectangle, etc.) 3. Constructed by: One Person 4. Design: Original -- No Kits 5. Due: April 2012 Guild meeting. Keep your project under wraps. Bring your quilt in a paper bag with your name on the bag. If your name is on the quilt, please cover with a piece of cloth. The QBTS members present at the April meeting will vote for their favorites. Ribbons will be awarded for First, Second & Third Place, as well as Best Interpretation of Theme, and Best Use of Embellishment. Ribbons have already been made by the Peace by Piece Bee, and I ve heard they are to die for!!! This will also be a category at the QBTS 2012 show. Thank you for your participation. Peace by Piece Bee: Betty Downey, Fran Gosline, Pat Haislip, Bev Kern, Anne Hope Marvin, Doris Munka, Alice Prescott, and Kathi Rosbrugh. Quilters by the Sea Guild of Wilmington 5
