1 AmbrosiaTwirly Skirt This skirt has just enough ruffled detail to make it feminine and fun while still draping nicely, and it works well in a variety of fabrics. Whip up a couple in fun prints for your favorite young lady, and use the scraps to make matching hair clips! 2010 Amanda Murphy

3 Twirly Skirt Instructions (Use a 1/2" seam unless otherwise noted.) 1. Wash all fabric. Put in dryer. While it is still damp, take it out of the dryer and press. (You don't want to have fabric shrinkage after you sew the skirt, especially if, like me, you sometimes put clothes in the dryer by mistake!) Fold in half, matching selvages. 2. Cut out the TIER 1 and TIER from the feature fabric according to cutting diagram. For TIER 3, cut two strips of size specified on the previous page from your contrasting fabric. 3. Overcast or zigzag the short ends of all pieces. 4. Pin the TIER 1 pieces, right sides together. Stitch short ends. Press seams open. 5. Pin the TIER, right sides together. Stitch short ends. Press seams open. 6. Pin the TIER 3 pieces, right sides together. Stitch short ends. Press seams open. 7. To form the channel for the waistband elastic, turn top (narrower) edge of TIER 1 under 1/4" towards the wrong side of the fabric and press. Turn under again 3/4" and press. Topstitch 5/8" away from the folded edge, leaving a 3" gap at a side seam to thread the elastic through the waistband later. Set aside. 8. To finish the hem on TIER 3 you have two options, OPTION 1: Overcast bottom of third tier band. Fold under 1" toward the wrong side of the fabric and press. Fold back 3/4" and blind hem stitch, following blind hem stitch diagram. Press. OPTION 2: If you don't have a blind hem stitch on your machine, fold bottom edge of TIER 3 under 1/2" toward the wrong side of the fabric. Fold 1/2" under again, encasing the raw edge. Topstitch 3/8" away from the fold. 4 9. Using a 1/2" seam allowance, machine baste a line of straight stitching (using a very long stitch length) starting at a side seam and going all the way around the unfinished edge of TIER 3. Repeat starting from the other side seam using a 3/8" seam allowance. 10. Repeat Step 9 on one of the unfinished edges of. 11. Turn right side in. Turn TIER 3 right side out and slide inside, pinning raw edges together, and matching side seams and centers. (You should be pinning the edge of TIER 3 that has the basting stitches to the edge of that does NOT have the basting stitches.) Adjust the gathers in TIER 3 so they are evenly distributed. Hand baste together. 12. Machine stitch to attach tiers. Press seams toward upper tier. Topstitch 1/4" above seam on the outside of the skirt. 13. Repeat steps 11 and 12 to attach TIER 1 to TIERS 2 and Thread elastic through casing and try on your skirt, making pencil marks on the elastic to indicate the desired fit. Zigzag elastic together and trim. Try on again just to make sure you have a good fit. 15. Topstitch over the gap in the casing you left in step 7 to completely enclose the elastic. Barrette Instructions 1. Make 3 small yo-yos using your Yo-Yo Maker. 2. IF YOU DON'T HAVE A YO-YO MAKER you can also make tiny yo-yos by cutting out 2" circles of fabric. Run a basting stitch around the circle, turning in the seam allowance 1/4" while doing so. Pull tight and knot. Bury your thread inside the yo-yo. Making yo-yos on such a small scale can be very difficult for small hands (and even larger ones) so I HIGHLY recommend the yo-yo maker! 3. Glue your yo-yos onto your barrette.
