Designs in Machine Embroidery Volume 57 Website Exclusive Turned Ribbon Pillow: Instructions for 5 Block Lynda Remmers, of Hoopsisters.com The 8 Block version is available in the July/August 2009 issue of Designs in Machine Embroidery. EmbroidaBlock Pillow Design Free Download from Hoopsisters.com Our unique EmbroidaBlock designs are quilt blocks pieced, decoratively stitched, and quilted all in your embroidery machine hoop! The blocks are then stitched together using our own joining technique. This pillow is a quick and easy way to learn the Hoopsisters method of quilting with your embroidery machine. Editor s Note: The EmbroidaBlock method is ingenuous! If you ve previously shied away from piecing in the hoop, it s time to dabble in it. The Hoopsisters have simplified this method by including stepby-step guidelines stitched right into the design. The quilting fabrics that are laid down during the embroidery process eventually hide the instructions but they will guide you in completing the blocks. Materials For 5 inch blocks Fabric A 7/8 yard Fabrics B 7/8 yard 16 inch pillow form 8 pieces Quilters Dream Poly Select cut large enough to fit hoop 8 Pieces of Sulky Soft and Sheer Stabilizer cut large enough to fit your hoop Threads Thread #1 darker OR lighter shade than fabric A. This thread will be the fill pattern at the tip of the turned ribbon. It can also be the ribbon edge. Thread #2 match or blend with fabric B. This thread will be the stippling, and can also be the ribbon edge. One bobbin of thread #2 Prewound bobbin Vanish Lite from Superior threads or any wash away thread Step 1. At the Computer For pillow front, two blocks are available: Turned Ribbon Front 8 inch (TRF8) and Turned Ribbon Front 5 inch (TRF5). For the pillow back, two stipple blocks are available. Stipple Back 8 inch (Stipple8) and Stipple Back 5 Designs in Machine Embroidery Volume 57 - ONLINE EXTRA July/August
inch (Stipple5) Send the designs you wish to stitch to you sewing machine. (Refer to Volume 57 July/August for instructions on the 8 inch pillow) Step 2. Preparation For 5 blocks From Fabric A cut: Two 2 ½ x WOF Four 6 squares From Fabric B cut: One 2 ½ x WOF One 3 ½ by WOF Six 1 x WOF Eight 6 squares for back of pillow From A and B for borders cut 4-4 x WOF cross cut into 4 x 12 and 4 x 18 Cut batting scraps to match the border fabrics Step 3. EmbroidaBlock Turned Ribbon Pillow Front (TRF8) or (TRF5) Hoop stabilizer and batting with the batting on top. Thread the machine with a prewound bobbin and thread #1. Stitch the design outline on the batting, note the letter A stitched on the batting. Note the letter B. The letters can be stitched or the letters may be skipped, they are there for fabric placement only. Place the smaller strip of fabric B, right side to fabric A, raw edges even. Stitch the seam. Flip the fabric right side up, and smooth. Stitch the tack down. Trim the fabric to a scant ¼ inside the hoop, and leave at least ½ past the outside stitching line. Place fabric A right side to fabric B, raw edges even. Stitch the seam. Flip the fabric right side up and smooth out. Stitch the tack down. Trim the inside edge to a scant ¼ and the outside edge at least ½ past the stitching line. Sew or skip the letter B. Place fabric A, right side up, over the letter A. Make sure that at least ¼ extends past the line on the inside of the block. Stitch the next color, the tack down. Trim the strip, leaving at least a ½ past the outside stitching line. Sew or skip the letter A. Using the larger strip of fabric B, place the strip right side to the previous sections, raw edges even. Stitch the seam. 2 Designs in Machine Embroidery Volume 57 - ONLINE EXTRA July/August
Flip the fabric right side up and smooth out. Stitch the tack down. Trim the fabric to a scant ¼. Stitch the decorative fill stitches. You have time to go get a cup of coffee! Sew or skip the letter A Using a little KK2000 or other spray adhesive designed for embroidery, spray the wrong side of one of the block s back squares from fabric A. Sew or skip the letter A. Place fabric A right side to the last section, raw edges even. Stitch the seam. Place fabric A right side to the last section, raw edges even, stitch the seam. Flip the fabric right side up, and smooth out. Stitch the tack down. Trim the outside edges, leaving at least ½ past the stitching line. Stick the block back to the back side of the hoop. Replace the hoop on the machine. Check to be sure the fabric remained in place. Stitch the tack down stitch to hold the block back to the block. Note: If your machine has a feature that trims the jump stitches, now would be a great time to turn that feature off. Trimming jump stitches is wonderful for embroidery, however, we are quilting, and to make the backs of the blocks look as good as the front, jump trimming should be turned off. Change to thread #2 in the needle. Refill your coffee cup, and stipple the block! Flip the fabric right side up, and smooth out. Stitch the tack down. Remove hoop (DO NOT REMOVE THE FABRIC FROM THE HOOP) from the machine and carefully press the seams inside the hoop. Change to bobbin thread #2. Change needle thread to the wash-away thread. Decision time! Choose thread #1 or #2 to stitch the last step, the ribbon edge. Designs in Machine Embroidery Volume 57 - ONLINE EXTRA July/August
Whichever thread you choose, make sure to match the bobbin thread. Remember, you want the back to look as good as the front. Trim the jump stitches. Step 4. Construction for 5 inch blocks Trimming the Blocks Work with one side of the block at a time and turn back just the fabrics from the front of the block to the outside stitching line. Press. Take care to not press the entire block, just the edges. Lay out the blocks, stitch the top two and the bottom two blocks together using a ¼ seam. Three more blocks to go! Don t forget to turn the cut jump thread feature back on if it was turned off. Stippled Pillow Back (stipple5) Hoop stabilizer and batting, batting on top. Spray KK2000 on the wrong side of two 9 squares. Center and stick one on the top and one on the back of the hoop. Thread the machine with thread #2 in the bobbin, and wash-away thread in the needle. Trim the remaining layers (batting, stabilizer, and block back) VERY close to the fold line. Be careful not to cut the fold while trimming. Stitch the outline. Change to thread #2 in the needle, and stitch the stippling. Repeat for the remaining three blocks. Trim the blocks the same as block front. Stitch the blocks together the same as the pillow front Repress the fold flat. Trim the seam allowance to 1/8, press to one side. Repeat for the other three sides of the block. Trim the edges of the block to ¼. Center a strip of Wonder Tape over the trimmed seam. 4 Designs in Machine Embroidery Volume 57 - ONLINE EXTRA July/August
Stitch the two rows of blocks together using the same method, taking care to match the center seam. HS35 Layer the two short and two long borders with batting in the middle, machine quilt down the center of each strip, then stitch two rows ½ inch from each side of center to make 5 rows of quilting. Step 5. Finishing Stitch the zipper to the pillow front on one side. Stitch the opposite zipper tape to the pillow back. Press the 1 strip of Fabric A in half. Open out and press the raw edges to the center fold. Spray starch is very helpful. Turn back the top layer of fabric on one long side of each border to the last row of stitching. Trim the batting and backing 3/8 inch from the folded fabric edge. Turn the border strips over and trim the single layer of fabric to ¼ inch past the last cut edge. This will leave one single layer of fabric that will be stitched to the pillow center. With zipper open, stitch the pillow front to the pillow back, turn and stuff with a pillow form. Stick the strip to the Wonder Tape, centering the strip over the tape. Stitch the two short quilted borders to opposite ends of the pillow center, right sides together, matching raw edges. Stitch a ¼ inch seam, trying to not catch the batting. Trim the seam to 1/8 inch, press to one side. Repeat for the last two longer borders, applying them to the last two opposite sides. Trim the pillow to make a 16 inch square. Using thread #2 in the needle and the bobbin, choose a decorative stitch to stitch down each edge of the strip. We used a serpentine type stitch.
