1 The Rollin Rock From the President s Pen Bulletin of the Roseville Rock Rollers Gem & Mineral Society, Inc. Volume 54, Issue 1 - January 2013 I hope everyone had a string of safe and enjoyable holidays, and that you are looking forward to the new year with the Roseville Rock Rollers. The next few months will be busy with preparations for our annual fundraiser show on March 22 (Friday setup at 9 AM), 23 and 24 (Sunday takedown at 4 PM). Please sign up for the show at the Education Meetings. The show committees will need help with various work parties (Saturdays, dates to be posted in the Bulletin). Also, we have an information booth at the Gem Faire at the Fairgrounds on February 8, 9 and 10 (Friday-Sunday). I am the contact for the Gem Faire, so please sign up or call/ me to take a shift at the table you get free admission to the Gem Faire. Educational Program for January 8, 2013 Gemstone Carving is a fascinating topic. Learn all about this spectacular lapidary craft at our January meeting! The shop is looking great and no leaks, so thanks again to the workers. Vice President s Viewpoint -- Jim Barton We are on the look out for presentations and classes that you would like to attend. Let me know - it's how we keep our club fresh and interesting. We all have a talent for something - or just a desire to learn something new. What would you like to see? We'll be starting our New Year off with a presentation on gem carving. Later in the year we'll have a presentation on obsidian, more on jade and (oh did I mention that we'll have some Guatemalan jade slabs on our Silent Auction table, and a faceting machine?) Upcoming, there will be some Rockhound yard sales, so be sure to check your for the dates, as they are being confirmed too late to put in the bulletin. -- Teresa Johnson Tumbled Rocks Needed for Grab Bags We ll need your tumbled rocks (or other items) for the work parties to put in grab bags for the show, so bring them to the meeting. 2 MINUTES FOR ROSEVILLE ROCK ROLLERS EDUCATIONAL MEETING DECEMBER 11, 2012 Call to Order by President Jim Hutchings at 6:40 p.m. Flag Salute Present 50 members, 4 juniors and 5 guests Invocation given by Jon North Recess for dinner Introductions by guests and new members. Secretary correspondence: Thank you letter from the El Dorado M & G Society for displaying our Society s exhibit case at their show. A letter of appreciation from Aaron Saliba regarding the help Richard Kowaleski gave to the Webelos Cub Scouts and a letter from David Haggerty, in regards to a donation he made to the Juniors program and to the library in memory of his wife, Nola. Sunshine Cyndy Burchard reported no cards were recently mailed. Field Trips Gordon Standlee reported there will be a field trip on Dec. 30 th to Panoche Hills, led by Denise Hansen. Juniors Carole Kowalik reported on the activities the juniors did at their meeting. Treasurer Terry Yoschak reported all bills have been paid. Vice President/Programs Teresa Johnson reported the program for January will be on gem carving. Librarian/Historian Karla Shannon requested checked out books and magazines be returned. Refreshments Karla requested signups for the January Ed. Mtg. Show Jim Hutchings reported the first half of the payment was paid to the Fairgrounds. Show is March 23, 24, setup day is March 22. Next Show Committee meeting will be Jan. 15 th. Class Coordinator Teresa Johnson reported on the tour of his collection, given by Don Tadlock. The juniors will be given a tour on January 19 th. Lifetime Membership Nettie Moore received a Lifetime Membership for being a member for 25 years. Education Thru Sharing Award the CFMS Education Thru Sharing Award was given to Ed and Cyndy Burchard in thanks for their volunteer work for our Society. Election of Officers for 2013 Jim explained that there would be an open position for a one year Director, as Jim Barton, who held that position, would be incoming President. A nomination was made for Jon North to serve as a one year Director for A unanimous vote was made for the 2013 slate of Officers. Installation of the 2013 Officers was done by Hugh Brady. Awarding of CFMS Triangles and Bars Jon North thanked the 2012 Officers and awarded the CFMS triangles and bars to them. Gift Exchange was done. Silent Auction members were reminded to bid on the items on the SA table. Adjournment meeting was adjourned at 7:55 p.m. MINUTES FOR ROSEVILLE ROCK ROLLERS BOARD MEETING DECEMBER 11, 2012 Call to Order at 8:00 p.m. by President Jim Hutchings. Present a quorum was present. Membership Application a motion was made to approve the membership application received from John and Frances Dyer. Adjournment meeting was adjourned at 8:02 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Florence Brady, RRR Secretary Shop News As you may know, I usually head out to Quartzsite and Tucson around the end of January and through mid-february. I'll need some help covering the shop on the following Monday nights. Even if you are able to just open the shop at 5 PM and assist anybody who is working on their first cabochons, that would be helpful. I will be out on January 28th, February 4th & 11th. You can contact Jon North, Teresa Johnson, or myself if you would like to help out! 3 Gem Faire Workers Needed The annual Gem Faire at the Roseville Fairgrounds will be on February 8, 9, and 10. We are given a space to display show flyers and information regarding our club. RRR volunteers are needed. We have shifts for 2 1/2 3 hrs. long, each of the 3 days. Signups will be taken during the January Educational Meeting, or contact Jim Barton at (916) for more information and to sign up for a shift. January Show Meeting The meeting will be held Tuesday, January 15, at 6:30 PM in the club at the Roseville Fairgrounds. All club members are invited. January Board Meeting The meeting will be held Tuesday, January 22, at 7:00 PM in the club at the Roseville Fairgrounds. January Refreshments Refreshments for the January 8 Educational meeting are to be provided by Gina Malcolm, Liza Leynes, Kymberly Andrews, Sam Markley, Karla Shannon and Lisa Giampietro. Thank you all in advance! We would appreciate if each family would sign up and bring a refreshment once in Sunshine Sympathy cards were sent to Beverly Glenn, Carole Kowalik and Jim Hutchings, for the death of their mothers. Rookie Rock Roller News The Rookies will meet in the lapidary shop at 5:30 pm on January 8, At our last meeting, Jim Hutchings and Teresa Johnson helped the juniors make jewelry to give as gifts. We then went to the potluck and gift exchange at the educational meeting. What great food! For this new meeting, we will be learning about mixite with an activity to follow. Juniors and their parents need to sign up early for the fluorescence field trip Teresa Johnson planned for us. Saturday, January 12, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. 298 Ironwood Circle, Roseville, CA We are located on the corner of Diamond Oaks Rd. and Ironwood Circle. Ironwood is a gated community, however, our house is located just outside of the gate. We have primarily raw rock consisting of obsidian, jasper, agate, travertine, and petrified wood. I m sure there are other types of rough rock in there as well, but I m not that good at identifying them! We also have an assortment of pre-cut slabs. Also have some polished rock as well as some crystals. Many rock books, and some equipment, including a 24-inch slab saw. Most of the equipment we have has been consigned to Pearson s. 4 Lapidary Classes (Cabochon making) teaches you the skills you need to use our lapidary shop and/or what equipment to look for in setting up your own home equipment. Fee: $45, (Rookie Rock Rollers learn for free!) Includes tuition and shop use until you've completed the class. Ongoing classes are: Monday/Wednesday nights 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm and Saturdays as listed below. Saturday Lapidary Class requires sign-up ahead of time! Contact information -- see below. For Saturdays we are trying to have a 10 am- 3 pm time for students. Shop fee: Daily: $5 or Monthly: $20. Slab Saw: $1 per slab (18 inch) & 24 inch ($2) are available for large & extra large rocks. Wire Wrapping with Jon North Beginning Wire Wrapping a cabochon. Fee: $15 + materials or bring your own wire. Wednesday Jan. 9 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm Lost Wax Casting Class Location: Pearson's U.S. Lapidary 5523 Hemlock St., Sacramento Jan. 12 & 13 & Jan. 19 & 20 (2 Weekends) 9 am to 5 pm on 4 days. Fee: $275 (14 hrs) This is an extensive hands-on 4 Day Class! Covers: Wax design techniques, spruing & investing wax patterns, calculation of metal requirements, control of burnout cycle, and centrifugal casting of projects. Techniques for finishing and polishing jewelry using flexshaft machines and polishing lathes are taught. Problem solving and bench tricks are presented. Juniors Field Trip! Fluorescents & Other Minerals in a Private Collection We do have space available for adults too! Member Don Tadlock will be hosting a small tour (8 max) of his private collection in his home in Citrus Heights. Sign up now! Teresa Saturday Jan pm - 5 pm Wire Wrapping with Cyndy Burchard Learn to fine tune as well as learn new wrapping techniques. Fee: $45 + $10 materials fee or bring your own wire. Saturday Jan :30 am to noon. -- Note: this day, the Lapidary shop will open at noon for cabochon class! Lapidary Classes Silversmithing Class Location: Pearson's U.S. Lapidary Jan. 26 & 27 & Feb. 2 &3 (2 Weekends) 9 am to 5 pm on 4 days. Fee: $275 (14 hrs) This is an extensive hands-on 4 Day Class! Covers: Layout, sawing, filing, soldering, forging, and fabrication. You will use the torch, flex shaft equipment, buffers, hammers, pliers, etc., in the process of learning annealing, tension soldering, applique soldering, hand cleaning and polishing, saw piercing preparation and stone setting. Sunday April 14. 9am-3pm class Fee: $25 Sign up to be on list. Rock/Mineral Identification with Jim Hutchings Rock ID was a great class! Two offerings: Sat. April 27th or Sun. April 28th, 9 am to 3 pm. Sign-up now as this will fill up! Fee: $20 Free Form Gem Carving with Master Carver, Dick Friesen Tentative Date will be in April 2013 Fee: $80 Learn how to utilize material that isn't "cab" able, how to use diamond pastes, and dremel type machines. Sign-up so that we know there is an interest! Rock Tumbling with Teresa Johnson This can be done on a Thursday or Saturday. Fee: $15. Sign-up & pick a day! Chain Maille with Glenn Fiala Our last class was a lot of fun - we finished 2 bracelets. We chose Byzantine & Helm's Chain all for $25. Let me know what you would like to learn & your available date. Class is scheduled based on students. Min. 2. Beading Cabochons Learn to make a seed beaded bezel for your cabochons to hold them securely in place. We meet occasionally & work together to learn & complete our beading. Silversmithing - Silver Bezel with Jim Hutchings Location: Foresthill We are looking at April 19, 20 or 21 (class is 9 am - 3 pm). Sign up now for next offering. Max. is 3 per class. Member Fee: $65 Non-member: $95 Remember - We ask that you sign up ahead of time for classes. (Other than Mon & Wed when our Rock Hound Oasis is staffed from 5 pm to 8:30 pm). Advance sign-up is required for some classes so that instructors can have enough supplies on hand! We have a policy of prepayment - $20 deposit holds your space! 5 It s 2013 Show Time We Need Helpers! DATES: March 22, 23, 24 (NO experience needed!) Our show for 2013 needs volunteer workers to help with setup on Friday, March 22, members to help during the show hours on Saturday and Sunday, and also with the takedown procedure on Sunday. For our new members, don t hesitate to help, as you will be working with other club members who can provide any needed assistance to you. Remember, once it was all new to us, too! See areas where help is needed below. We ask that you sign up for a complete shift. Each volunteer will receive a ticket for the Workers Raffle for each shift worked. (Volunteers working for Setup and Takedown shifts, receive double raffle tickets.) Signups will be taken at our Educational Meetings, starting with the January 8 th meeting. We will have a list of job descriptions available. Look for the SHOW SIGNUPS sign. SETUP starts at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 22 nd and continues through the morning/afternoon. (A lunch is provided.) Assist with unloading items from storage trailer. Skirting is placed on vendors tables, exhibit tables are set in place and skirted, exhibit cases are set up, & signs placed. During the afternoon, we help the exhibitors, vendors, assist in kitchen if needed. A dinner is available for workers. TAKEDOWN starts promptly at 4 p.m. on Sunday, 24 th. Assist exhibitors. Remove empty exhibit cases, remove skirting, take down exhibitor tables. Remove skirting from vendors tables. Help pack all items into storage trailer. Help Silent Auction, Kids Junction/Education Station, Kitchen, and Entrance Area clean up. Clean up buildings. Fairgrounds puts away tables and chairs. DURING THE SHOW Hours Open: Sat. 10-5, Sun Each Show Day, Two different shifts: 9:30-1:30 and 1-5 (1-4:30 on Sunday) (Kitchen and Kids Junction/Education Station have different times/shifts.) KITCHEN help prepare the food or be a cashier and take orders and money. ADMISSION TABLES greet visitors, take admission money, assist with filling out forms which are used for hourly drawings and for addresses for the postcards. Explain the show is in 4 buildings. CLUB INFORMATION TABLE - answer questions regarding the club, hand out membership forms, lapidary shop flyers RAFFLE TABLE Sell Raffle Tickets! Explain grand prizes and hourly prizes. KIDS JUNCTION/EDUCATION STATION Run the train, assist with selling items, the spinning wheel, making necklaces, selling grab bags, etc. SILENT AUCTION Explain different auctions. Help setup an auction. Collect money from winners and make direct sales. A lot of fun, you get to see what is offered for sale! SECURITY Walk around the assigned building, be observant of the guests. A walkie talkie will be given to you to use. Arm bands and/or vests stating Security are worn. SHOP TOURS Scheduled tours of the Lapidary Shop will be done at 11 am and 1 pm. If you need to purchase a replacement ($6.00) please contact Florence Brady, (916) SHOW BIZ Show Notes The next show meeting is on Tuesday, January 15th, 6:30 PM at the lapidary shop. You are invited to attend if you would like to get a little more involved in putting on this fantastic show! We are looking for help with donations to the raffle and hourly drawings and each of the Chairs could use your help in staffing their activities at the show. We should have the sign up sheets ready for you to put your name on at the next educational meeting. We never discourage anybody crazy enough to want to spend the entire weekend with us filling in the holes! We could use folks in every area, with at least a four hour commitment on one or both of the two day show. We could also use all the help we can get on Friday, our set up day, at 9 AM, and we would hope many of you can stay to help out on Sunday afternoon at 4 PM to break it down and put it all away. We have had record set up times and break down on the last two shows. With help, we can be off the Fairgrounds by 7 PM Sunday night if everyone helps move the materials to the trailer! GRAND PRIZE RAFFLE TICKETS The Grand Prize Tickets will be available for pickup at the monthly general meetings prior to the show -- January 8, February 12, and March 12. You can get tickets for yourself and to sell to friends, relatives, neighbors, etc. Payment is due when the ticket stubs are returned. All checks should be made payable to Roseville Rock Rollers. Cost: 6 tickets for $ 5.00 or singles for $ 1.00 each. Return address labels may be placed on ticket stubs. Prize Donations Are Needed We really need donations for the Grand Prizes and for the Hourly Drawings. Please bring your donation (labeled with your name), to the educational meeting and give to Dan Stafford. Jewelry, mineral specimens, a gift certificate for your favorite place, dinner for two, tools for rock hounds; subscription to a rock magazine, etc. --- Things you would like to WIN! 7 SHOW BIZ Prizes this year are: Workers Raffle First Prize: Amethyst Tower Second, Third and Fourth Prizes: Your choice of an RRR vest with patch, OR a family membership to RRR for one year. You earn a ticket for each 4-hour shift you work at the show! It s that simple. You earn two tickets for working during the Set-up or Takedown shifts. And when those raffle tickets are pulled (at the April 9th meeting, need not be present to win), you are only competing with other show workers. Show chairpersons and show officers do not get tickets! So your chances of winning are much better than being struck by lightning! T-shirts $10, Vests $20, Patches various prices Exhibit Case Applications Exhibit cases are one of the main attractions of our show. It gives the public an idea of what our hobby is all about. 8 Lapidary Class Graduates Congratulations to our December Lapidary class graduates: Kelley Ballard John McPherson Peggy McPherson They have finished 4 cabochons and given one to the Club Members Exhibit Case! Want to Be a Lapidary Class Graduate? We have a few new members who have expressed an interest in learning the processes of making cabochons. The Rock Hound Oasis (otherwise known as our Lapidary Shop) is open every Monday & Wednesday night from 5 pm to 9:00 pm. We also schedule Saturdays (10 am to 3 pm) on an appointment basis. Time wise, you can come during that time, you don't have to be there exactly when we begin. The Lapidary class cost is $45 and covers all of your shop use for about a month. We also provide the rocks to learn on. It will take about 3-4 visits. You will have completed the class when you have completed 4 cabochons. The 4th one is given to RRR and goes into our display case. We can start you off on Saturday, Jan. 5th. 10 am to 3 pm. Kim Loe, Erik & Debra Anspaugh have offered to help instruct on a Saturday. We need to know how many people to expect on Saturdays so that we have an instructor there for you. Please look at your schedule and let me know if / when we might see you!
