2 PAST HONOREES & DINNER CHAIRS Founded in 1972 by Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford, Dinner of Champions is the premier, black-tie gala of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The event recognizes individuals and/or companies who have shown great leadership and civic responsibility within their community by bestowing the Hope Award, the most prestigious Society volunteer award at the chapter level. HISTORY IN ROANOKE The Roanoke Dinner of Champions was established in 1991 and continues today as recognition for distinguished local corporations and their employees. Friends and colleagues of the honored guest come together for an evening to share experiences and stories of the honoree and raise funds for the National MS Society. 5 ABOUT MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million worldwide. OUR MISSION: People affected by MS can live their best lives as we stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost and end MS forever.
